RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (May 31, 2020)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Writing about music and radio charts at the moment is a bit strange, but for petition and donation resources in the fight against racial inequality in our country, please go to this website and do what you can. Here’s what’s popping at the format this week:

FOUR ALL THE YOUNG CATS: Doja Cat‘s “Say So” holds at #1 on the Top 40 radio chart for the fourth week. The big hit stays at #5 on this week’s chart at the Rhythmic format and moves from 14-12 on the Hot AC chart.

Four songs reach the top 40 on the chart this week, led by Doja Cat’s new single, the Gucci Mane-assisted “Like That”. It moves up from 45-35, becoming the pair’s third and fifth top 40 entries on the chart, respectively. One notch below, “Rockstar” from DaBaby and Roddy Ricch rocks up from 46-36: the single stars as their third and second top 40 entries to date, respectively. Katy Perry‘s “Daisies” blossoms from 43-39, marking the performer’s 29th top 40 hit at the format since 2008. Finally, rising from 42-40, “Don’t Rush” lands Young T & Bugsey and featured performer Headie One their first top 40 song on the pop airwaves.

Another collaboration, this one coming from the Black Eyed Peas, Ozuna and J. Rey Soul, leads off this week’s top 50 entries at #45. “Mamacita” is the follow-up to the group’s J Balvin-assisted “RITMO (Bad Boys For Life)”, which holds at #8. At #47, Gabby Barrett debuts with “I Hope”, her recent #1 track on the Country radio chart. Newcomers Surf Mesa and Emilee land at #48 this week with “ILY (I Love You Baby)”, a partial remake of a 1967 classic that was originally a smash for Frankie Valli, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”. The song that soared from Netflix’s To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, Ashe‘s “Moral Of The Story”, enters at #49 this week. Last but not least, Roddy Ricch appears again on the Mustard-assisted “High Fashion”, which struts its stuff at #50.

RECORD REWIND 2020: PGTC Picks, Week Twenty Two

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
CAL – “Catch” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: First appearance

You may remember Cal Shapiro as one half of the Boston duo Timeflies, who scored a minor top 40 single on the pop radio chart in 2016 with “Once In A While” and released their most recent track in early 2019. The lighter piano pop tune is a very pleasant listen.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
STELA COLE – “Goldrush” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Third appearance

Eureka! We’ve found it! Actually, we’ve known about Cole and her musical metals for some time now: her last two singles, “Woman Of The Hour” and “Love Like Mine”, were included on the Rewind earlier this year. Unsurprisingly, this song is a nice pop treasure.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
DYLAN – “Guilty”
ELIO – “LA In Two”
JOY OLADOKUN – “Breathe Again”
PHOEBE RYAN – “Reality”
POLLY MONEY – “Astrid”
THE BLOSSOM – “Won’t Leave My Bedroom”
THE WLDLFE – “New Age Meds”

Want to be featured on this weekly wrap-up? Submit your music to adamfsoybel@gmail.com and I’ll check our your tunes. Thanks!

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (May 24, 2020)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Sure, it’s a holiday weekend, but the Top 40 chart is definitely not taking a holiday when it comes to fast action. Here’s what’s popping at the format this week:

CURIOSITY THRILLED THE CAT: For the third consecutive week, Doja Cat‘s “Say So” remains at #1 on the Top 40 chart. It’s likely to spend a fourth week at the summit, especially given the lack of competition currently in the top five. However, that’s not all for radio’s top feline this week, but you’ll have to wait and see what song of hers is meowing at the bottom of the list as you read on:

This is the most active week for top 40 entries in quite some time, led mostly by larger names and a couple of emerging ones. “X” by the Jonas Brothers is the highest of five tunes to make the jump, up from 45-26 to become the trio’s 12th top 40 hit at the format. Harry Styles picks up his fifth solo entry in the region with “Watermelon Sugar”, which flows from 42-28. This one follows “Adore You”, which spent a week at the top last month. The highly-anticipated collaboration from Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande is new at #38: “Rain On Me” showers the two women with their 21st and 22nd top 40 hits at the format, respectively. Grande is also at #18 with the Justin Bieber collaboration “Stuck With U”, which moves up from #22 last week. Jackson Wang leaps from 43-39 with “100 Ways”, his second top 40 entry of the year and the first since record label 88rising’s collaboration “Walking”, which got as high as #37 in January. Lastly, Alec Benjamin scores his first top 40 song with “Oh My God”, rising from 44-40.

Into the top 50, Katy Perry sprouts at #43 with “Daisies”, which is already in the top 20 on the Hot AC chart. As mentioned above, Doja Cat claws back onto the Top 40 chart with the Gucci Mane-assisted “Like That”, which climbs aboard at #45. One spot lower, the DaBaby and Roddy Ricch collaboration “Rockstar” starts strumming and rocks it out at #46. Both this single and “Like That” are well into the top 40 on the Rhythmic chart with current peaks of #13 and #23, respectively. Finally, Cyn reaches the top 50 with her first ever chart entry, “Drinks”. Landing at #49, the song is taken from the soundtrack to Promising Young Woman.
