TOP TEN: One Summery Summary

Four reasons to love the season.

With Memorial Day Weekend in full swing, the unofficial start of summer has begun. It’s time to get out the swimsuit, the shades and the sunblock, because looking like a lobster is so not in style (unless, of course, you are a lobster, but then you wouldn’t be at a computer reading this.) Summer may be about fashion and fitness, but it’s also a season of great music. The turnover on my list has been pretty striking from week-to-week recently, as those summer song contenders make themselves known, but it appears a dominant “summer” title song won’t be around on pop radio this year. (You’ll have to go to the country chart for that one.)

We’ve handled topics about summer songs before: national hits from past decades, radio races, etc. However, I haven’t covered a countdown of the top “summer” hits from my own personal chart. After all, the results of my top ten songs are different from the usual set of classics. A lot of these songs came and went, some without much life at all, but it’s still nice to give them a spin or two. So, if you’re ready for some vacation vibes, jump into this pop pool with some splashy stats from my survey:

Chart Notes:

• In what may be the least-surprising announcement of the year, for its second time, Adele has one more #1 single to add to her files on my personal chart. Leaping from #4 to #1, “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” is the third consecutive #1 off her 25 album, which matches the same number of chart-toppers she had from 21. No artist or band has done that before in the time I’ve been compiling my survey. Also, “Send” represents her seventh #1 overall, which ties her with Coldplay for a heated battle in the category of Most #1 Songs. (The band is currently climbing with “Up&Up”.) What else can I say? She is still the queen.
• This week’s Highest Debut belongs to FRANKIE, who comes in at #38 with “New Obsession”. It’s featured on an EP titled Dreamstate. Only three chart hits with “obsession” in their titles have gone top 40 on CHR radio since that listing began in 1973, and should this title make it four, it’ll be the first since another Frankie — Frankie J, that is. The Mexican singer had his biggest hit with “Obsession (No Es Amor)”, which went to #3 in the spring of 2005. (Mariah Carey did hit #8 with her “Obsessed” in 2009, but with its use as a verb rather than a noun, I’ve counted it separately.)
• Swedish singer LÉON makes her chart debut this week at #39. She may be “Tired Of Talking”, but I think she knows that a lot of people aren’t “tired” of hearing her music. In fact, more of them will be exposed to it when her first radio single goes for Hot AC adds in two weeks. You can find “Tired” on her Treasure EP, which has done big streaming numbers.
• Lastly, at #40, is the duo A Great Big World and “Won’t Stop Running”. It follows “Oasis”, which went to #3 earlier this year. This is the first “running” title to sprint onto the survey in three years. Do you remember “We Come Running” by the band Youngblood Hawke? The top ten Alternative hit peaked at #34 on my chart in early 2013.

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of May 27, 2016

Putting in that “Work” for a #1.

It might be the start of Memorial Day Weekend on the calendar, but the date is a little different in the music world. In fact, we’ll be launching a full two months ahead… at least when it comes to the week’s biggest release. Here are all the notable new albums and singles:

• FIFTH HARMONY — 7/27 (iTunes)
  • The female quintet, who formed on the U.S. version of The X Factor several years ago, is on the verge of their first #1 at pop radio with “Work From Home”. They may also have a chance at their first #1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, but that’s going to depend on their stream counts and track sales during the week. Regardless of position, an exciting first week awaits them.
• DIERKS BENTLEY — Black (iTunes)
  • Bentley recently hit #1 on the Country airplay listing with “Somewhere On A Beach”, which is a pretty popular spot on any holiday weekend. This is his eighth studio set under his major-label deal, and six of them (plus a seventh set in the form of a hits compilation) have gone top ten. Will that dark title see the light next week? Stay tuned.
• CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN — The Ride (iTunes)
  • The British rockers have their biggest hit to date on our Alternative survey with “Soundcheck”, currently in the top 15. As far as album sales go, this group is much bigger in their homeland, but there should be a notable rise in sales and peak (compared to their last effort) on the Billboard 200.

Chart Notes:

• Coldplay have a split single on their hands to follow their hit “Adventure Of A Lifetime”, a two-week #1 on my survey. The run for “Hymn For The Weekend” is just beginning at a few mainstream formats, but I’m on Team “Up&Up”, which lands a nice debut in the Alternative top 40 this week. It’s also my Highest Debut, coming in at #37. All three songs are featured on the A Head Full Of Dreams album, which hit #2 on the Billboard 200 last year.
• The Virginia group called Parachute has accumulated five chart hits on my top 40, four as a quintet and one as a trio. The sixth entry for them is their second as a trio, and it’s titled “Without You”. It’s new at #39 this week. Interestingly, there’s a second radio single by a trio called The Rua of the same name, both at Hot AC radio and both being promoted by the very same marketing group. Seeing double yet?
• Finally, at #40, is the third top 40 hit from Gwen Stefani‘s This Is What The Truth Feels Like album. It’s “Misery”, which is not a hot Soul Asylum or Maroon 5 cover. It goes for adds at Hot AC radio on Monday. Stefani has two singles on this week’s chart, with “Make Me Like You” (#2) heading downward.

Chart Notes:

• When you’re hot, you’re hot! After climbing aboard at #26 last week, Justin Timberlake rockets to #10 with “Can’t Stop The Feeling”, featured in the upcoming animated film Trolls. The international hit is one of three songs from the movies in the top ten. (For those of you keeping score, Barns Courtney‘s “Fire” (Burnt) and P!nk‘s “Just Like Fire” (Alice Through The Looking Glass) are the other two.) That two-week run into the top ten matches the run for Adele‘s “Hello” six months ago, but that song jumped 25-10 for a gain of 15 notches.
• OneRepublic‘s “Wherever I Go” is the Highest Debut on this week’s chart, coming in at #36. It’s the first single from their forthcoming album, due later this year. You’ll probably see and hear a lot of this song beginning on Tuesday. That’s when a music video for it premieres, the band performs it on The Voice and it debuts in a beer commercial. Pretty busy day!
• The other new song in this week’s chart is “What We Live For”, the fifth top 40 single for American Authors. It enters at #38. It’s also the title of their sophomore album, which is due to be released on July 1. “Live” is the third single to be issued from the set; the others were “Go Big Or Go Home” (#4) and “Pride” (#10).

It’s Commencement season once again, so come and celebrate the newest musical graduates on the release schedule. With a top pop mark or two, they’re bound to go far on the charts. Here are this week’s new albums and singles:

• KYGO — Cloud Nine (iTunes)
  • The Norwegian DJ and producer, born Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll, hasn’t seen much radio success in the U.S. with singles like “Firestone” and “Stole The Show”. However, he’s had a solid presence on the charts in Europe, especially in his home country of Norway, during the past two years. Cloud is his first album to hit the market, and the current U.S. single from it is “Stay”. Whether it’s a cirrus, cumulus or stratus, it’s bound to rise in those chart skies.
• MEGHAN TRAINOR — Thank You (iTunes)
  • Trainor’s sophomore era can be reduced to a series of unfortunate events, which likely wasn’t planned as so. “NO”, the leadoff single, stalled at #7 on Top 40 radio due to negative research, and rushing out “Me Too” proved to be a challenge, thanks to a retouching issue in its video. The album is still likely to be a #1 contender, but it will not have legs if the current conditions regarding its singles continue.
