RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (June 30, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. A free-spirited performer is on top as we get closer to the holiday week, as more guests arrive for the pop pool party. Let’s see what’s popping at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

TALK TO YOUR TRAVEL AGENT: As vacation fever swells, this week’s pop paradise is led once again by Khalid, who earns his second week at #1 on the Top 40 airwaves with “Talk”. Given the usual holiday programming at this time of year, the cut could score a third week at the top, but Khalid’s competitors are beginning to sneak up on him in the top five. We’ll see what kind of gains they’ll receive in the next few days. Meanwhile, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello‘s hit “Señorita” storms into the top 40 with a move from #41 to #20, the biggest jump by far in the countdown this week. The collaboration is Mendes’s ninth top 40 entry at the format and Cabello’s 11th as a solo artist.

This week’s top 50 action is led by Tove Lo, who starts at #44 with “Glad He’s Gone”. She was last in the top ten around this time in 2016 on the Nick Jonas solo hit “Close”, which spent four non-consecutive weeks at #10 that June and July. Meanwhile, Jonas and his two siblings, the Jonas Brothers, debut at #48 with “Only Human”, the third charting song from their recent #1 set Happiness Begins. Both “Sucker” (#2) and “Cool” (#10) are still in positive territory at the format, with the latter cut entering the region on this week’s chart. In-between those two singles, Ava Max‘s “So Am I” and the Ed Sheeran and Khalid collaboration “Beautiful People” are also new to the top 50, landing at #46 and #47, respectively. Look for “Beautiful”, along with “Only”, to appear on the weekly list of the Most Added songs at Top 40 radio on Tuesday evening.

RECORD REWIND 2019: PGTC Picks, Week Twenty Six

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

With the release of her newest album Clarity on Friday, this is probably the last appearance from Petras you’ll be seeing here on the Rewind for some time. That being said, this is really good album closer to what’s been an amazing (and sometimes unexpected) era.

_____

Chart Notes:

  • Shawn Mendes earns his third #1 single on my personal chart with “If I Can’t Have You”, moving from 2-1. The release follows 2017’s “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” and 2018’s “In My Blood”, which spent a combined total of five weeks at the summit. So far, there’s no word on a new studio album from the performer, but with two active songs on the radio, there should be some sort of announcement soon. Debuting on the list, Zara Larsson‘s “All The Time” (#34) and Cyn‘s “Holy Roller” (#39) appear following their impact date at the Top 40 radio format on Tuesday. “All” is expected to enter the top 50 on that chart in the next few days, while “Holy” still has a ways to go before it reaches the region. The former artist’s “Ruin My Life” got as high as #5 on my personal chart in December of last year and January of this year.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (June 25, 2019)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: lightning could strike twice for Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello at the format, as they lead a busy top ten ahead of a slower holiday week. Alright, señoritas and señores, let’s add ’em up:

GOING GOING SHAWN: Even though it’s not a hot Justin Timberlake cover, a totally different “Señorita” from Mendes and Cabello is easily this week’s Most Added release at Top 40 radio, picking up 124 stations on impact. However, Mendes’s past single “If I Can’t Have You” cleared the entire panel of 183 stations in its first week a month ago. While that track continues to gain in the top ten, Cabello is also in the top 40 with the Mark Ronson collaboration titled “Find U Again”. Look for “Señorita” to grab some top 30 action by the weekend at both this and the Hot AC radio charts, where it earned a first-week total of 25 stations yesterday.

Zara Larsson also had a solid day for her current single “All The Time”, which made a very timely entrance in third place with 33 stations during the session. A posthumous single by Avicii, featuring a lead vocal by successful collaborator Aloe Blacc, ranked a notch lower with 25 adds during the session. Both “SOS” and the aforementioned “All” should enter the top 50 very soon.

Proven winners from Lewis Capaldi, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, as well as additional new songs from Ava Max and Cyn, are among the rest of entries filling out the top ten this week.

Next week, watch out for some early action on Ellie Goulding and Juice WRLD‘s new collaboration, as well as some other titles that are impacting next month.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. SHAWN MENDES & CAMILA CABELLO, “Señorita” (Island/Republic)
1. TAYLOR SWIFT, “You Need To Calm Down” (Republic)
3. ZARA LARSSON, “All The Time” (TEN/Epic)
4. AVICII featuring ALOE BLACC, “SOS” (Geffen/Interscope)
5-T. AVA MAX, “So Am I” (APG/Atlantic)
5-T. MILEY CYRUS, “Mother’s Daughter” (RCA)
7. LEWIS CAPALDI, “Someone You Loved” (Capitol)
8-T. HERVE PAGEZ & DIPLO featuring CHARLI XCX, “Spicy” (Mad Decent)
8-T. MARK RONSON featuring CAMILA CABELLO, “Find U Again” (RCA)
10. CYN, “Holy Roller” (Unsub/Caroline)

RADIO REPORT: What’s Popping At Top 40 Radio This Week (June 24-25, 2019)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist this week. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here are six new tracks impacting this week at the Top 40 format:

AVA MAX – “So Am I” (APG/Atlantic)

AVICII featuring ALOE BLACC – “SOS” (Geffen/Interscope)
Album: Tim (2019)
Past T40 History: This is Avicii’s first posthumous release here. Blacc sung the lead vocal on 2013’s “Wake Me Up”, his one #1 hit.

CYN – “Holy Roller” (Unsub/Caroline)
Album: TBA (2019)
Past T40 History: Cyn is the lone format newcomer in the mix this week. She is one of the acts signed to Katy Perry’s Unsub label.

MKTO – “Shoulda Known Better” (Crooked Paintings)
Album: TBA (2019)
Past T40 History: The duo has four top 40 singles to date. This past April, their track “How Can I Forget” managed a peak of #50.

SHAWN MENDES & CAMILA CABELLO – “Señorita” (Island/Republic)
Album: TBA (2019)
Past T40 History: As a duo, their big collaboration “I Know What You Did Last Summer” got as high as #10 back in January 2016.

ZARA LARSSON – “All The Time” (TEN/Epic)
Album: TBA (2019)
Past T40 History: “Time” for Larsson to reach the top ten again! Her last top 40 entry, “Ruin My Life”, peaked at #16 in February.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (June 23, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Some say that talk is cheap, and while that’s not so far-fetched, it does change when it’s on top of the pop chart. Let’s see what’s popping at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

WE NEED TO TALK: Earning his third #1 smash at the format since September of last year, Khalid leaps from 3-1 on this week’s Top 40 chart with “Talk”. Of those three hits, it’s the first by just himself to reach the summit; the other singles were with Normani and a three-way collaboration with Benny Blanco and Halsey. Accordingly, “Talk” is also the new #1 song on the Rhythmic chart, while it continues to gain in the top ten and top 20 on the Urban and Hot AC formats, respectively. Expect it to hang onto the top for a second week here on the pop survey, as Khalid’s main competition is still too far away to knock him out.

Further down the survey, the action isn’t nearly as exciting, but there are still a few notable titles to mention. Moving from 43-37, we have the 11th top 40 single at the format for Miley Cyrus with “Mother’s Daughter”. It’s the sole entry in the region this week. After debuting on Friday, the second chart collaboration by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello starts at #41. “Señorita” is likely to be this week’s Most Added record at the format on Tuesday evening and should see a nice rise through the top 40 by the weekend. Only one other song slides into the top 50 this week, a collaboration that’s already been to #1 on the Rhythmic chart: “Pure Water” checks in at #50 for Mustard and Migos. It also recently appeared in the top ten on the Urban chart. Should this song make the top 40 on the pop airwaves, it’ll be the first with the word “pure” in its title to enter the region in 20 years.

  • Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie‘s song “ME!” holds on for a fourth (and potentially final) week at #1 on my chart, while Swift’s “You Need To Calm Down” easily claims the Biggest Mover title with a huge surge from 35-20 in its second week in the countdown. Both releases can be found on her upcoming album Lover. There are three debuts in the top 40 this week, all coming from performers who have previously hit the top. New at #36, five-time chart-topper Michael Bublé leads the way with “Forever Now”, the second radio single from his album ❤️. Back at the end of January, “Love You Anymore” got to #3. One spot below him, James TW enters at #37 with “Incredible”. During the fall of 2016, he topped my list for seven weeks with “When You Love Someone” and has charted a handful of times since then. Lastly, at #39, a duo that’s earned a string of notable hits on my survey ever since it officially began in September 1999: the Goo Goo Dolls with “Miracle Pill”. As a trio, they last went to #1 in 2002 with the song “Here Is Gone”. This is their first top 40 entry here since “So Alive”, which spent two weeks at #16 in the summer of 2016.
