RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 13, 2022)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. This week’s chart may be the sweetest of the month…

YOU’VE GOT GAYLE: 17-year-old GAYLE spends a third (and likely final) week at #1 on the Top 40 radio chart with “Abcdefu”. The single is headed for the top of the Hot AC chart, advancing from 5-3 this week.

The latest baked treat served hot and fresh on the chart is “Sweetest Pie”, a collaboration from Megan Thee Stallion and Dua Lipa at #33. It’s their seventh and 17th top 40 hits at the format, respectively. Em Beihold rises from 41-36 with her viral hit “Numb Little Bug”, her first top 40 hit ever. Lastly, Tyga and Doja Cat jump from 47-40 with “Freaky Deaky”. Not so freaky: it’s the tenth top 40 single for both artists.

A couple of buzzing collaborations lead some entries in the top 50 this week: newcomer Omah Lay and chart regular Justin Bieber land at #46 with “Attention”, while Latin stars Becky G and Karol G start at #47 with “Mamiii”. The forecast also looks solid for Eddie Benjamin and “Weatherman”, which becomes his first chart entry at #49.

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Let’s see what’s wandering up the list at the format this week:

“EASY” TO PIVOT: As radio shifts from seasonal to year-end programming, Adele holds at #1 on the Top 40 radio chart for a fourth week in a row with “Easy On Me”. The song is still in the top ten at four separate formats: AC, Hot AC, R&B (formerly Urban AC) and Top 40.

Format star Doja Cat scores her ninth top 40 hit with “Woman”, soaring from 41-33 this week. It’s the fourth single to chart from her album Planet Her. Rising from 46-38, “Merry Christmas” goes on a sleigh ride up the survey for Ed Sheeran and Elton John. It’s the 24th top 40 song for Sheeran and the 48th for John when combining the archives of both Mediabase and Radio & Records since late 1973. Lastly, “It Was A… (Masked Christmas)” leaps from 42-40 this week, as Jimmy Fallon, Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion sit and unwrap their first, 27th and sixth top 40 presents, or singles, respectively.

The last top 50 entry of the year is a posthumous hit from Juice WRLD in a collaboration with Justin Bieber. “Wandered To LA” wanders into the countdown at #48.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (July 18, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Gather your crew for what’s popping at the format this week:

REMEMBER THE “NAME”: Earning a second week at #1 on the Top 40 chart, Lil Nas X‘s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” lands just 34 spins ahead of the song at #2: “Good 4 U”, a future #1 at the format for Olivia Rodrigo. Meanwhile, “Montero” advances from 3-1 on the Rhythmic chart.

Post Malone leads a pack of five debuts in the top 40, as “Motley Crew” advances from 43-29 this week. It’s his 15th top 40 song to date. Up from 46-35, Billie Eilish picks up her eighth top 40 single with “NDA”. At three letters in length, it becomes one of the shortest titles to land on the chart, though we’ve had even shorter ones historically, including “Go”, “I”, “If” and “No”. Maroon 5 secures their 30th top 40 entry at the format with another relatively short title, “Lost”, lifting from 45-37. Kane Brown and Blackbear are next at #38 with “Memory”, which debuts at that position. It’s their third and eighth top 40 hits, respectively, though Brown has earned quite a few more on the Country chart. A fifth and final title moves from 41-40 to just sneak into the region, as TikTok star Nic D scores his first top 40 hit with “Fine Apple”. The song now joins a handful of other titles containing apples or pineapples to enter the chart, including “Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie”, “Little Green Apples”, “One Bad Apple” and “Pineapple Princess”.

Currently in the top 20 on both the Rhythmic and Urban charts, “Thot Sh*t” twerks onto the pop radio list for Megan Thee Stallion at #49. One spot lower, we have another significant hit from the two radio lists: “Late At Night”, debuting at #50 for Roddy Ricch.
