RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (October 6, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. As the leaves start to turn different colors, a colorful pack of new songs have started to fall onto the pop chart. Let’s see what’s popping at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

WHAT “HURTS” THE MOST: Lizzo‘s big hit “Truth Hurts” continues at #1 on the Top 40 list for the third consecutive week, as it remains in the top ten at Hot AC, Rhythmic and Urban radio. On the pop chart, it remains above 19,000 spins for the week, losing less than 2% of its airplay from week-to-week. Lewis Capaldi‘s “Someone You Loved”, a recent #1 single on the Hot AC chart, may start to creep up on the top spot by next weekend, but it’s still more than 1,800 spins away from the summit as of the current chart.

One Direction‘s Niall Horan blasts in with his sixth solo top 40 hit (19th including the group’s run of charting songs) at #36. It’s titled “Nice To Meet Ya” and it leads his upcoming studio album, due sometime early next year. The high debut for it is partially due to hourly airplay upon its release on Friday. Australian band 5 Seconds Of Summer moves from 44-37 with their tenth top single to date, “Teeth”, which can be found on the soundtrack to the new season of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why. The recent top five hit on the Rhythmic and Urban radio charts for Megan Thee Stallion also becomes her first top 40 single on the Top 40 airwaves: “Hot Girl Summer” lifts from 42-38, which features Nicki Minaj, earning her 38th top 40 hit, and Ty Dolla $ign, who grabs his seventh.

Leading off the week’s top 50 entries is the Diplo and Jonas Brothers collaboration called “Lonely”, which bows at #42. The tune was last week’s Most Added title at the format. A couple of spots lower, Bebe Rexha‘s “You Can’t Stop The Girl” checks in at #44, a single from the soundtrack to Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil (which opens in about two weeks.) Niall Horan’s former bandmate Liam Payne bounces in at #45 with the A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie-assisted “Stack It Up”. Lastly, starting at #49, “Takeaway” finds The Chainsmokers and Illenium collaborating with newcomer Lennon Stella, who previously charted at the Country format as one half of the duo Lennon & Maisy.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (September 8, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Whether you’re a lover, a liar or somewhere in-between, we can all enjoy this week’s action on the airwaves. Let’s see what’s popping at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

LONG TIME SHAWN: Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello remain at #1 for the third week on the Top 40 list with the big hit “Señorita”, as it gains more than 200 spins and continues to approach the format’s all-time weekly record. The track is up in airplay at several other formats, including Hot AC and Rhythmic, though it is slowing down a bit overall at this point. With new music from Cabello entering the mix this week in the form of a dual single release, “Señorita” may struggle to get a fourth week at the top. It sits less than 900 spins ahead of its nearest competitor at #2, as the gap continues to tighten.

Format superstar Taylor Swift jumps from 49-33 with the title track from her album Lover, making it her 30th credited top 40 hit to date. It also enters the top 40 on the Hot AC chart this week. As noted above, Camila Cabello now has three songs simultaneously in the top 40 on the pop survey, starting at #37 with “Liar” and at #40 with “Shameless”. The tracks become her 12th and 13th chart entries as a soloist, respectively, and will appear on her upcoming studio album. Between Cabello’s pair of new hits, the group Why Don’t We moves from 43-39 with their fourth top 40 hit, “What Am I”. It’s their second to be co-written by Ed Sheeran, who also penned their 2018 single “Trust Fund Baby”, which topped out at #29 that April.

AJ Mitchell and Ava Max enter the top 50 at a relatively moderate pace with “Slow Dance”, which hits the floor at #45. This is the first collaboration to chart for the two soloists, though they’ve reached the top 40 on their own, Mitchell twice and Max once. New at #49, Megan Thee Stallion makes her format debut with the top ten Rhythmic and Urban radio hit “Hot Girl Summer”. The single also includes Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign. Finally, coming in at #50, Khalid reaches the region with “Right Back”. The tune is available in its original form on the album Free Spirit and as a stand-alone remix with A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (September 3, 2019)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Post Malone has the cure for your post-Labor Day blues, as his latest hit circles the format and squarely leads the weekly log. Let’s add ’em up:

THE SHAPE OF POP RADIO: Ahead of his highly-anticipated album Hollywood’s Bleeding, due Friday, Post Malone lands the Most Added song at Top 40 radio this Tuesday with “Circles”, scoring a big 115 stations. “Circles” snuck into the top 40 on this past Sunday’s published update at #40, so you can expect it to make a larger move by the weekend. At the Rhythmic format, the track is in second place on the log with 15 adds in its first week.

Taylor Swift also advanced with the title track from her album Lover, which received 34 stations during the session and a second place finish. Though the track has not seen a formal impact date as of yet, it’s already at #10 on the latest Billboard Hot 100 update following the album’s robust #1 debut. As “You Need To Calm Down” begins to descend in the coming weeks, look for this single to easily make the top 40 very soon.

Charting releases by Alessia Cara, Lizzo and Normani are among those prominent songs making up the rest of the top ten.

Camila Cabello looks poised to lead next week’s adds report, with new music (two songs) from her expected on Thursday.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. POST MALONE, “Circles” (Republic)
2. TAYLOR SWIFT, “Lover” (Republic)
3. NORMANI, “Motivation” (RCA)
