RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (January 30, 2022)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Time to head to an alternate pop planet:

CURIOSITY FILLED THE CAT: The album Planet Her is full of big hits and another has reached the summit: “Need To Know” rises from 3-1 on the Top 40 radio list for Doja Cat, the second chart-topper from her current era and third historically.

Back in the top 40 for the first time since the summer of 2019, The Chainsmokers start at #30 with “High”, their 13th top 40 entry to date. From her forthcoming album Love Sux, Avril Lavigne leaps from 43-38 with the Blackbear-assisted “Love It When You Hate Me”. It’s her 17th top 40 hit at the format and first since the summer of 2013, while Blackbear earns his ninth overall. Finally, Daisy The Great lifts from 46-39 this week with the AJR-assisted “Record Player”, now at #6 on the Alternative radio chart. The collaboration is the first top 40 title for the duo and the seventh for trio.

With their current #2 hit on the Alternative radio chart, Imagine Dragons land at #44 on the chart with “Enemy”, the theme song from the Netflix series Arcane: League Of Legends. Two versions of “Enemy” are receiving airplay: one by the quartet itself and other featuring rapper JID. Coming off a recent viral trend on TikTok, “Every Summertime” enters at #46 for newcomer NIKI. The track was originally featured on the soundtrack to Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings last year. The film hits continue at #47 this week with the debut of Encanto‘s “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, sung by the cast of the animated movie. The song recently reached #1 nationally in the U.K. and is headed that way in the U.S., appearing at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Finally, newcomer Jena Rose checks in at #49 with “Checkmate”.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (January 23, 2022)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Here come this week’s party Animals:

THE “HEAT” IS ON: In its 29th nonconsecutive week in the top 40, “Heat Waves” rises from 2-1 on the Top 40 survey, as Glass Animals score their first #1 song at the format. Their hit spent three weeks at #1 on the Alternative radio chart in March of last year.

Singer and songwriter Charlie Puth lights up the #30 spot with his new release titled “Light Switch”. The debut marks his 12th top 40 hit to date. The Walters also enter the top 40 this week with “I Love You So”, landing at #39. Originally released back in 2014, the tune went viral on TikTok last fall and continues to grow.

This week’s top new entry in the top 50 is a collaboration that teams Avril Lavigne and Blackbear: “Love It When You Hate Me” has more love than hate from the Top 40 panel, as it starts at #43. The track is also just below the top 40 at the Hot AC format. Newcomers Daisy The Great spin their way into the #46 position with the AJR-assisted “Record Player”, a current top ten hit on the Alternative chart. The original version of the tune (without AJR) had a fairly successful run on TikTok during the fall of 2019. Producers ALTÉGO are also new to the list at #47 with “Toxic Pony”, their mashup of two chart classics: “Toxic” spent four weeks at #1 for Britney Spears during the spring of 2004, but “Pony” only got as high as #32 for Ginuwine in early 1997. (It hit the top five on the Rhythmic and Urban charts in late 1996.) Finally, Sena Kana and Poo Bear sneak in at #49 with “Undisputed”.
