RADIO REPORT: POP! Goes The Picks (June 2015) (Part One)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new singles will be lighting up the national charts during the month. Which tracks will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here’s a small selection of new songs being serviced in June on the CHR and Hot AC formats in the first part of this month’s Radio Report:

CHR (*) and HOT AC (**)

AMERICAN AUTHORS – “Go Big Or Go Home” (June 2) (* + **)
Label: Island/Republic
The latest single from the quartet that gave us 2014’s most-played song on Hot AC radio is simultaneously heading to CHR radio, making for one big impact date. Of course, that song was “Best Day Of My Life”, which continues to get play every day, even if it’s not the best one. “Go” has already earned a good placement with the NBA Playoffs. Now, let’s see if it’s a slam dunk on the charts.

MARK RONSON featuring MYSTIKAL – “Feel Right” (June 2) (*)
Label: RCA
Though “Uptown Funk” has faded from the top of the radio and sales charts after a huge run, Ronson is looking to funk things up again with his latest track, which features a New Orleans rapper on a comeback. Born Michael Tyler, he was last in the top 40 way back in 2001 on the Double Take remix of Joe‘s “Stutter”, peaking at #11 on the format. It’s unexpected, but definitely very cool.

O.A.R. – “Two Hands Up” (June 2) (**)
Label: Vanguard
“Two” is the third single to be released from the group’s 2014 album The Rockville LP, which also includes “Peace” and “Favorite Song”. The latter of those two singles barely touched the top 40 on Hot AC late last year and earlier this year, so the prospect of a third single is a bit perplexing. That being said, it’s another good song from the quintet and should garner some good action here.

PRINCE ROYCE featuring PITBULL – “Back It Up” (June 2) (*)
Label: RCA
For a singer that’s notched high peaks on the Latin and Tropical charts with relative ease over the past few years, it was definitely a disappointment to see his first English single, “Stuck On A Feeling”, stall halfway up the CHR chart, even with its status as an On The Verge pick for iHeartMedia stations. Still on the prowl for his pop throne, this new collaboration is a sizzling summer sound.

ROB THOMAS – “Trust You” (June 2) (**)
Label: Atlantic
It’s been a long time coming for fans of the 43-year-old singer, songwriter and leader of Matchbox Twenty, but the release of a leadoff single is always welcome news. “Trust” is the first to be issued from the forthcoming The Great Unknown album, which is due to be released later this year. You can also see him on a tour of the same name. Let’s hope that Hot AC puts their trust in this.

TORI KELLY – “Should’ve Been Us” (June 2) (*)
Label: Capitol
Much like “Back It Up” earlier in this post, “Should’ve” is the followup to another On The Verge selection that stalled in the teens, Kelly’s being “Nobody Love”. With just weeks until the release of her debut album, Unbreakable Smile, the label may be working overtime to get her name back out there on the airwaves. Luckily, the R&B-influenced single should fit well on most CHR outlets.

MKTO – “Bad Girls” (June 9) (*)
Label: Columbia
If you’ve seen the advertisement for the upcoming season of ABC’s Mistresses, then you’ve heard a portion of the latest single for the duo that’s seeking their fourth top 40 single at the radio format. Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller return with a song that might give “Classic” a run from its… well, classic status. (There can be two classics in their catalog, yes?) Look for it to soar very quickly.

DAYA – “Hide Away” (June 16) (*)
Label: Artbeatz/Z-Entertainment
It started on SiriusXM’s Venus last month, and now a dozen independent radio stations (and YouTube’s Tyler Oakley) are leading the way on this girl’s debut single. She’s a 16-year-old singer and multi-instrumentalist based in Pittsburgh, PA and her single was just featured on iTunes in their New Artists feature. With sales and streams going up, this could be a dark horse in the radio race.

SAGE THE GEMINI featuring NICK JONAS – “Good Thing” (June 16) (*)
Label: Republic
Here’s a hot pairing with a jam that’s bound to be big over the summer months at several formats. It teams the California rapper, featured on Flo Rida‘s recent top ten hit, “G.D.F.R.”, and the New Jersey singer, currently falling in the top ten with “Chains”. It already has a good thing going on the sales side and will likely rise even higher once stations get on board closer to the adds date.

KARMIN – “Didn’t Know You” (June 30) (*)
Label: P.I.C/in2une
After one EP and an album with Epic Records, Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan are keeping it independent as they move onto a new era. Can they work their way back up without a major backing? Well, the duo does have five top 40 releases to their credit on CHR radio (three peaked in the 30’s) and some decent support from core fans. We’ll see if they “Know” the right buttons to push.

Chart Notes:

• Several newcomers have made it to the top this year and latest to do so is the trio Jukebox The Ghost, who fly 5-1 with a song called “Postcard”. That leap marks the biggest climb into the top spot since September 2012, when “Hall Of Fame” by The Script and will.i.am made a move of 6-1. The Washington, D.C. act has been together for over a decade, but this hit lands them their first single to make my top 40 thanks to a recent album reissue and radio push earlier this month.
• This week’s Highest Debut is also from a newcomer, ROMANS. You may remember his collaboration with Naughty Boy called “Home”, when he was credited as Sam Romans, though it fell short of my top 40. The singer was born in the English town of Pinner. A handful of top 40 artists were also born there, including Charlie Dore (best known for 1980’s “Pilot Of The Airwaves”) and, most notably, pop superstar Elton John. “Uh Huh” bows in at #36.
• In January 2006, a teenager from Buffalo, NY made his chart debut with a single called “For You I Will (Confidence)”. The song peaked at #15, and was followed by “These Walls”, which reached #3. However, Teddy Geiger fell off the radar very quickly afterwards. Now, he’s making a comeback as a songwriter, co-writing this week’s #38 entry, “Stitches”, by Vine star and singer Shawn Mendes. It’s his second top 40 hit here.
• There’s only one act on the chart this week that was also present on my first official chart in September 1999. Back then, he was the featured vocalist on Santana‘s “Smooth”. Now, he debuts with tenth solo hit and his twenty-second overall with a catalog of huge songs with Matchbox Twenty. It’s Rob Thomas and his latest at #39, “Trust You”. His new album, The Great Unknown, will be released later this year.
• Recent American Idol winner Nick Fradiani has the last of the four entries on the survey with “Beautiful Life”, coming in at #40. He’s a 2008 graduate of the college I once attended, Wheaton College in Norton, MA, though he was gone before I came in that fall as a freshman. It’s still a first for my chart. “Beautiful” is the fifth coronation song by a winner to reach my top 40.

TOP TEN: Three Is Better Than One

“B.Y.H.B. (Bring Your Hot Body)” (Listen) (Download)

If you ever programmed a Hot AC radio station in the last decade plus and thought about scheduling Better Than Ezra, Sugar Ray and Uncle Kracker back-to-back, congratulations. It’s 2015 and they’re all in one big group together. What’s the deal? The trio is a combination of the leaders of those two bands, Kevin Griffin and Mark McGrath, respectfully, as well as the singer. Their first single together as Uncle Ezra Ray, “B.Y.H.B.”, was released this past week through Tentative Music, owned by Griffin. It’s not likely to see much radio action (I’m looking at you, The Pulse) given that it is independent, but hey, nostalgia is nostalgia.

Speaking of the old days, in honor of the new single, I thought I would put together a top ten list of the biggest songs by the three to make my personal chart. Of course, my top 40 officially began in September 1999, so there’s several hits by the two bands that were too early to make it on here. That being said, it’s nice to see that my current workplace is represented quite well on here. (In fact, all three acts were in the Warner family at one point in their careers, with BTE on Elektra for three albums in the 90’s.) Let’s soak it all in, shall we?

TURN IT UP TUESDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (May 26)

Two of this week’s Stone cold releases.

Memorial Day has come and gone, and the chart veterans are, for the most part, taking in some extra rays. However, a number of new releases are up for sale. Here are the albums and singles that are new in stores for the week of May 26:

• You may have noticed Washington-born singer Allen Stone‘s new album, Radius, as a First Play on iTunes last week. It is the 28-year-old musician’s first set for Capitol Records and features the singles “Freedom” (currently rising on the Hot AC chart) and “Upside” (making some small gains at AAA radio.) Look for it to see some decent sales this week. (iTunes)
• Featuring the recent minor Hot AC hit “Hurricane”, California pop/rock trio Lifehouse return with the album Out Of The Wasteland, their first to be released independently after a run with Geffen Records. It was produced by longtime manager Jude Cole, best known for his national top ten single “Baby, It’s Tonight” in 1990. (iTunes)
• His single “Cool” (featuring Roy English) looks to be finished at the CHR format, but DJ and producer Alesso has a cool collection of new tunes out today called FOREVER. It’s his debut album, and should be moderately successful in the States. (iTunes)

Chart Notes:

• New at the top this week is Canadian Carly Rae Jepsen and “I Really Like You”, advancing 3-1 this week. The song marks her second time atop my chart following 2012’s “Good Time” with Owl City, which stayed there for two weeks. “Really” is the first single off her new album, E·MO·TION, which may or may not be released late next month. (A date for the U.S. has not been issued as of yet, likely due to the song’s slow performance at radio.)
• This week’s Highest Debut belongs to the original American Idol Kelly Clarkson and “Invincible”, the second single from her recent chart-topping album, Piece By Piece. It enters up at #33 and follows “Heartbeat Song”, which peaked at #9. If it also hits the top ten on my chart, it’ll be her 17th to do so, far more than any other contestant in the show’s history. We will see just how mighty it is in the coming weeks.
• Last Sunday night, you may have tuned in for the splashy music video launch of Taylor Swift‘s “Bad Blood” (with cameos from everyone and their mother) at the beginning of the Billboard Music Awards. Now, that track debuts at #35 on the top 40 this week. It’s the fourth charting release from 1989, and all three previous singles reached the top spot.
• Rolling in at #39 is the ninth chart hit Utah’s Neon Trees, the act led by 31-year-old Tyler Glenn. Their new one is “Songs I Can’t Listen To”, and it’s currently being tossed around the lower rungs of the Alternative chart. To date, the band’s had a #1 with two prior leadoff singles: “Animal” in 2010 and “Sleeping With A Friend” in 2014.
• Lastly, down at #40, is Rixton and their fourth hit from the album Let The Road, titled “We All Want The Same Thing”. It is released in the U.K. on June 7, a day before their full-length set hits, which came out here in the States in early March.

We’re piloting another pass into the pop stratosphere with a Monday date full of fresh releases. (NOTE: some items may not be available until Monday night based on label response time, but most of them are up now.) Here are the albums and singles that are new in stores for the week of May 18:

• Having been in and out of the top ten on iTunes as a pre-order for weeks on end now, it’s very likely that Blurryface from twenty | one | pilots, the duo of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, will be the top entry on the Billboard 200. Looking at the potential of a top five debut and even a shot at #1, it would be a big boost from their last set, 2013’s Vessel, which peaked at #58. Lead single “Tear In My Heart” is a current top ten on Alternative radio. (iTunes)
• Russian-born and German-raised DJ/producer Zedd may be in free fall on the CHR survey with “I Want You To Know”, his recent release with Disney star and singer Selena Gomez, but he’ll be back on playlists soon enough with a new Jon Bellion collaboration, “Beautiful Now”. Meanwhile, True Colors, his first album since 2012, is in stores and looking at a larger debut than Clarity. (iTunes)
• With 25 years of music and 18 number one songs atop the Hot 100, Mariah Carey is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, dahling. #1 To Infinity is an updated collection of those chart-topping singles and also includes “Infinity”, which Carey recently performed on the Billboard Music Awards. It went to several radio formats earlier this month. (iTunes)
• Led by “Can’t Deny My Love”, a recent entry on the Alternative survey that looks to have under-performed at the format, Brandon Flowers is back for his second solo effort away from The Killers, an album titled The Desired Effect. It may not do as well as 2010’s Flamingo, but it’s sure to attract his core fans. (iTunes)
• 21-year-old newcomer Kelsea Ballerini has her first top ten single on Country radio with “Love Me Like You Mean It”. Now, her first album, The First Time, is in stores. Given her Taylor Swift co-sign from earlier this year, it should debut decently. (iTunes)

Chart Notes:

• This week’s Highest Debut is the third top 40 song from American Authors, the group that formed in Boston and is now based in New York City. Their single is “Go Big Or Go Home”, new at #35. You’ll be able to purchase it tomorrow. The four men scored a #1 on my chart in November 2013 with “Best Day Of My Life”, which spent a week at the top. Will they march their way their way back “Home” to the top? That story has yet to be written, so stay tuned.
• As “Sugar” continues to descend on the chart, Maroon 5 rush out a new single with “This Summer’s Gonna Hurt…”, a new entry at #36 this week. It was recently tacked onto the digital editions of V. Should it hit the top ten later this season, it will be the first “summer” title to go that high since Kid Rock‘s “All Summer Long”, which peaked at #8 in September 2008. It should be another huge radio hit for the guys.
• Last, but certainly not least, the third charting single from Strange Desire rolls in at #39 for 31-year-old singer/songwriter Jack Antonoff and Bleachers. It’s “Like A River Runs”, which is the follow-up to last year’s “Rollercoaster”, a #3 hit. Look for it to officially debut in the Alternative top 40 as well this week. He hits the road with Charli XCX in late July.
