A few months ago, this duo released a jam called “Right Place Right Time”, which got them a solid amount of blog coverage and a contract with LAB Records, an independent group that’s given us some tasty tracks recently. You can add this pop gem to the list.

JESSE RUBEN – “First Day Of Summer” (iTunes) (Spotify)
This is why we need him: fun and catchy songs that fit the light-hearted manner of the season. You may know his tender ballad of late last year, especially with its reach, but it’s always good to hear another side of a songwriter. “First” is a nice slice of sunshine.

KID RUNNER – “Don’t Change Me” (iTunes) (Spotify)
While “Give Me Something To Love” remains in rotation for me, this Ohio quintet has a whole EP coming out in just two weeks. I think it’ll be pretty awesome based on the two releases so far. “Don’t” shines in all its alt-pop glory, with a good melody and lyric.

KINGDM – “Superman” (iTunes) (Spotify)
The dynamic duo has been making the various streaming platforms their kingdom since late last year, and the reign continues on with their heroic and high-flying new release. It’s an easy listen, a lush piece of late night pop. Grab your cape and keep listening.

MARC SCIBILIA – “Believer” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Current Nashville resident Scibilia was previously with I.R.S./Capitol Records, but now, he’s good with Good Lander. So, it’s not a surprise that his new self-released song is also, well, good. Written about a hope for change in rough times, it’s a hit with heart.

OFELIA K – “Killing Me” (iTunes) (Spotify)
This Los Angeles singer keeps releasing great singles for the blog and streaming communities, and that growing base of believers is really making an impact. “Killing” is keeping her alive, and sailing smoothly into the hearts of art pop lovers around the world.

Chart Notes:

• Two hits from the Alternative chart make their way into my top ten this week. Up from 14-9 is Coldplay‘s “Up&Up”, which becomes their 11th top ten since 2005. The group is tied for the most #1 singles ever on my personal chart with seven; will a record eighth be in their future? We’ll see soon. Soaring from 17-10 is the second entry, “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore” by Phantogram. It’s the duo’s first time in the region.
• This week’s Highest Debut is by a California singer/songwriter that made my top ten in her first seven chart appearances, a duet with Jason Mraz among them. Colbie Caillat returns with her 11th top 40 single, “Goldmine”, entering at #37. The single marks her first away from Republic (formerly Universal Republic) Records. You’ll now find her under her own label, PlummyLou, distributed by Sony’s RED.
• At #39 is the week’s only other debut, “Fresh Eyes” by Andy Grammer. It’s his seventh single to reach my top 40, and the first from his forthcoming third album. Since my chart began in 1999, two “Eyes” songs saw their way to the top. In 2005, it was “Behind These Hazel Eyes” from Kelly Clarkson, which held at #1 for four weeks. Two years later, “Her Eyes” by Pat Monahan spent five weeks there.

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of July 29, 2016

Major debut alert.

Don’t think I’ve ever considered being a locksmith as a career, but by the amount of keys referenced in this week’s top new release, perhaps there’s a business opportunity on the horizon. Here’s a look at the new and notable albums and singles on the schedule:

• DJ KHALED — Major Key (iTunes)
  • When your imprint has three of the top 20 singles at both Rhythmic and Urban radio, I’d say you’re doing pretty well for yourself. That’s indeed the case for this 40-year-old DJ/producer from Miami, who will likely reach the top of the iTunes listing faster than you can shout “WE THE BEST MUSIC!” Major key for this release: selling enough copies to defeat Drake‘s Views.
• JAKE OWEN — American Love (iTunes)
  • Owen’s fifth studio album features the single “American Country Love Song”, which is rising in the top ten at Country radio. He’s certainly the patriotic performer this era, and he’ll likely have a top 20 entry on the Billboard 200 chart.
• FANTASIA — The Definition Of… (iTunes)
  • It’s been 12 years since Barrino became the third American Idol, and this week, she’s back with her fifth studio album. The current single from it is “Sleeping With The One I Love”, a top 20 record on the Urban AC survey.

Tropical vibes for a cause? Yes, it’s true. The Trevor Project (U.S.) and Kids Help Phone (Canada) are earning the proceeds from sales and streams of this song. So, feel good about digging that summery sound, and feel better knowing that kids are aided by it.

KNGDAVD – “Say My Name” (iTunes) (Spotify)
They may be lacking a few vowels in their name, but this New York City duo makes up for it with some punchy pop songs that will get you energized. Their latest tune sounds like a sync waiting to happen; don’t be surprised if you hear it on TV soon. Get into it!

LAVOY – “Smile” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Though they released their first EP two years ago, it wasn’t until earlier this week that I discovered this Spokane quintet and that nostalgic 80’s pop influence shining like a sunny afternoon. If you’re looking for a song that will perk you up, this is a great listen.

PIERRE STEMMETT – “No Sweat”
Stemmett’s been on my radar since last year, when he uploaded a single called “Sleep Anthem”. So, if you’ve been sleeping on the South African singer up until now, you should probably take a listen to his tropical pop jam. “No” leads his upcoming EP, Outset.

STEFAN ALEXANDER – “Skeleton” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Making a good first impression with his debut single, Alexander searches through the shadows of a love gone wrong to find a way to begin anew in this dark cut. Early contender for a new Halloween playlist? I think so. I’m looking forward to more of his songs.

THE ELECTRIC SONS – “Cool”
Last year, I discovered a handful of great tracks from this Atlanta band, including “Into The Night” and “Tell Me What To Say”. It takes good timing to release a single called “Cool” during a major heat wave, and that electropop goodness is some needed relief.

YOUNG SUMMER – “Paused Parade” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Earlier this month, I featured “Alright” from this D.C. singer in the Rewind. Now, musical chameleon Bobbie Allen returns with a light piece of pleasurable pop, influenced by jazz elements. If a picture of a summer day came alive, it would sound like this track.

Chart Notes:

• There’s a familiar name taking the throne on my personal chart. The London quartet Bastille has their third #1 single with “Good Grief”, which climbs 3-1 in its sixth week in the countdown. It’s taken from their upcoming album Wild World, which is released on September 9. (You’ll find that release date to be a common one in this week’s notes.) Their previous #1 songs were 2013’s “Pompeii” and 2014’s “Of The Night”, which each spent two weeks at the top. We’ll see if this can get to three.
• This week’s Highest Debut is a new hit for the Los Angeles act called Grouplove. “Welcome To Your Life” comes in at #32. It leads their forthcoming third album, Big Mess, due on September 9. It was four years ago this month that “Tongue Tied” led my chart for two weeks. Though they’ve hit the top five a couple of times since that single, they haven’t been back to the top spot. Will this be the song to do it? Stay tuned.
• In the fall of 2003, singer/songwriter Gavin DeGraw scored his first top 40 hit on my chart with “Follow Through”. It hit a peak of #11. This week, his new single enters the top 40 at #39. It’s “She Sets The City On Fire”, featured on the upcoming album Something Worth Saving, due September 9. DeGraw’s biggest hit on my chart remains “Chariot”, which reached #2 in 2005.
• Finally, at #40, is Seattle singer Mary Lambert and “Hang Out With You”. It’s her first single to be released since her exit from Capitol Records earlier this year. (She’s now under the independent Tender Heart label.) In 2014, “Secrets” got to #8 on my chart, the only charting song from the Heart On My Sleeve album.

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of July 22, 2016

All rapped up.

We’ve hit the summer doldrums of the music industry this week. Unless Frank Ocean or Travis Scott drop their new albums, a superstar has a surprise set, or we somehow end up in a time warp to 1999, things are pretty barren. Here’s a quick look at the new and notable albums and singles this week:

• LIL DURK — Durk 2X (iTunes)
  • The 23-year-old Chicago rapper is likely to have one of the higher debuts on next week’s chart, as his last set made its entrance in the top 20 on the Billboard 200. The current single from it is “Money Walk”, sitting just below the top 40 at Urban radio.
• GUCCI MANE — Everybody Looking (iTunes)
  • This is the Alabama rapper’s first studio album since being released from prison, and several of the tracks are gaining nicely at streaming platforms. It’s hard to tell where it’ll place, but there’s definitely interest.
• KEITH SWEAT — Dress To Impress (iTunes)
  • Sweat recently topped the Urban AC chart with “Good Love”. It could end up in the top 40 on the album listing, but it will likely be much bigger on the R&B survey.

CARDBOARD KIDS – “I Don’t Need Love” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Several tracks by this Nashville quartet have been featured in the Rewind over these last few weeks, and if you’re in the mood for a new band suggestion, they have a good thing going with their new EP, Mint. “Don’t” is one of the highlights in the five-track set.

GREER – “Love Me Less”
Boston’s Greer Wilson recently uploaded a pair of tracks, collaborating once again with Christian Medice, a co-writer on a couple of top ten hits on my personal chart from 2014. With a good lyric and a good bounce, he’s got a nice jam for the blog community.

HARLETSON – “Say Our Goodbyes (Quarter Song)” (iTunes) (Spotify)
The trio of Weston Wilson, Jackson Singleton and Nathan Harrington is off to a great start with their debut single, which follows a number of cover videos since last fall. You’ll want to invest more than a few quarters in this future radio hit. Look out for them.

The streaming numbers don’t lie; with over six million plays to date, Andrew de Torres’s project is a hit. Of course, you knew that already; he’s been featured on my PGTC playlists for nearly a year. His latest song is a solid addition to his diverse music catalog.

Summer never sounded so good for this New York singer and songwriter. With two massive tracks to date, she is definitely going to be around for some time. Serving empowerment and intelligence, it sends an important message during a time of uncertainty.

TAY SALEM – “Iron” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Salem is a new act on my radar, and the London musician doesn’t disappoint with this track. He could have a cinematic future if a good music supervisor finds his work. He paints with dark and lush tones that will grab you from the first listen. Very cool single.

VHS COLLECTION – “Ghost” (iTunes) (Spotify)
In a week of Ghostbusters coverage in the media, I ain’t ‘fraid of no “Ghost”. In fact, I’m embracing this one. The New York group pops in a new tape and comes out with a danceable little ditty. If you’re headed to Chicago for Lollapalooza, they play on Sunday.

Chart Notes:

• After five big weeks at the top, “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from Justin Timberlake is forced down to #2 by a newcomer. At 22 years old, Jordan Fisher has a big future ahead in worlds of film and music. His debut single, “All About Us”, climbs 2-1 in its 11th week on the chart. It’s also in the top 30 at pop radio, where it scored a sizable amount of adds upon impact. It’s been nearly 25 years since his label, Hollywood Records, scored their first top 40 hit at the format: “In My Dreams” by The Party, a #16 hit from late 1991 and early 1992.
• Four strong debuts make the chart this week, but the situation is looking a little bit different than what I was expecting. The new entries are led by Britney Spears, making her splashy return with “Make Me…”, coming in at #35. The single reached #1 on iTunes shortly after its release, and is currently at #2. It features rapper G-Eazy. This song’s release comes as several clips from its music video leaked a few days ago. Will it become Spears’s first top ten on my chart in five years? Stay tuned!
• Nathan Sykes has ranked in my top 40 on his own and with his bandmates in The Wanted. This week, it’s another of his solo singles that makes the countdown. “Give It Up” is new at #38. The track impacts at CHR/Top 40 radio this Tuesday. In the history of the pop radio chart, two other singles with that exact title, but a different song, have hit the top 40. In 1984, it was KC (without the Sunshine Band) that got to #19 with it. Then, in 1992, the title reached #17 for Wilson Phillips.
• Further down the chart, Katy Perry is new at #39 with “Rise”. If you haven’t heard it on the radio yet, chances are that you will soon, as it’ll be featured in NBC’s coverage of the Rio Olympics in August. However, it’s important to note that “Rise” is not the lead single from her forthcoming album. As of this post, it’s #1 at iTunes in over two dozen countries.
• One spot below Perry is “Capsize” from FRENSHIP and Emily Warren, two newcomers to my top 40, which comes in at #40. It’s been a huge streaming song at Spotify, totaling nearly 69 million plays thus far. The California duo was featured in my 16 For ’16 list, spotlighting emerging acts, in December of last year.
