ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (August 31, 2021)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: the gods of the format place Halsey‘s new song on the Top 40 throne. Let’s add ’em up:

“I AM” AT THE TOP: From the new set If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, Halsey led the adds report at Top 40 radio with “I Am Not A Woman, I’m A God”. It picked up 137 stations in its first week. Halsey also topped the adds report at the Alternative radio format, but with a different song: “You Asked For This”, also featured on the same album. “I Am” debuted at #36 on the pop chart last weekend.

Climbing into second place, “Need To Know” secured another 41 adds, as Doja Cat just earned her eighth top 40 hit at the format. Walker Hayes also impacted this week with his recent viral hit from TikTok, as “Fancy Like” tied for third place with another 28 stations. The track is just outside the top 20 at the Country radio format.

Charting singles from Billie Eilish, SEB and Twenty One Pilots returned to the top ten on the adds report this week.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (August 29, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. For all the hot and new releases that you need to know, here is what’s popping at the format this week:

“GOOD” TO THE LAST DROP: For its sixth and final week at the top, “Good 4 U” is the #1 song at Top 40 radio once more. While Olivia Rodrigo and her hit will be exiting the summit before the holiday weekend, she is also poised to lead the Hot AC chart with the same tune in the coming weeks.

Moving from 42-33, “Essence” marks the second and first top 40 hits for WizKid and Tems, respectively. A new remix with Justin Bieber is also securing airplay at many pop stations. You can find both versions on the deluxe version of Made In Lagos, the most recent WizKid set. Doja Cat jumps from 41-35 with “Need To Know”, her eighth top 40 hit overall and third from the Planet Her album, which peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Meanwhile, Halsey returns to the pop radio chart with “I Am Not A Woman, I’m A God”, debuting at #36. The song becomes the performer’s 16th top 40 entry to date.

“Chasing Stars” chases down a #48 debut, as Alesso, Marshmello and James Bay look to make an astronomical ascent on the list. At #50 this week, newcomer Olivia Penalva is in with “Ex’s”, her first song to chart outside of her native Canada.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (August 22, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. From cold hearts to hot new tracks, here’s all that’s popping at the format this week:

“4” SCORES: For the fifth consecutive week, Olivia Rodrigo holds strong at #1 on the Top 40 radio chart with “Good 4 U”, taken from the recent chart-topping album Sour. Meanwhile, “Déjà Vu” remains in the runner-up position for the third week, still over 600 spins behind her leader at the top. Across the radio world, “Good” is expected to top the Hot AC chart in the next few weeks.

In the top 40, four new tunes check into the region: “Summer Of Love” is the highest, starting at #31 for Shawn Mendes and Tainy. This is the 12th top 40 single for Mendes and the second for Tainy, who last charted two years ago as a collaborator on Benny Blanco‘s “I Can’t Get Enough”, which peaked at #29. Jumping from 41-32, the Black Eyed Peas, Saweetie and Lele Pons hit the top 40 with “Hit It”. The song becomes their 22nd, fourth and first entries in the region, respectively. Next in line, Billie Eilish has her ninth top 40 entry with the title cut from her album Happier Than Ever, debuting at #36. Finally, at #40, we have a rather momentous debut: “Cold Heart”, a collaboration from Elton John and Dua Lipa. In the 48 years that an airplay chart has been compiled, combining the archives of both Mediabase and Radio & Records, “Cold” marks John’s 47th top 40 song at the format and first since January 1998. Meanwhile, Lipa has her 16th top 40 hit.

New at #42, WizKid and Tems enter the chart with their current top five hit at Urban radio: “Essence”. A new remix with Justin Bieber is also securing airplay at many pop stations. The only other new single in the top 50 is “Drive You Home”, which speeds onto the survey at #50 for Jackson Wang and the collective/record label Internet Money.

Chart Notes:

  • It’s another super week on my personal chart for Dua Lipa, as “Love Again” spends a third week at #1 and “Cold Heart” (her collaboration with Elton John) lifts from 34-21, easily taking the Biggest Mover title this week. Two buzzing collaborations reach the countdown this week, with Shawn Mendes and Tainy coming in the highest at #35 with “Summer Of Love”. The tune is nearing the top 30 at both the Hot AC and Top 40 radio formats. A spot lower, “Move” lands at #36 for Santana, Rob Thomas and American Authors. In 1999, Santana and Thomas reached #2 on my chart with their classic “Smooth”. Will the cut from the 74-year-old legend’s forthcoming album Blessings And Miracles perform as smoothly? Stay tuned.
