RADIO REPORT: POP! Goes The Picks (April 2015)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new singles will be lighting up the national charts during the month. Which tracks will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here’s a small selection of new songs being serviced in April on the AAA, Alternative, CHR and Hot AC formats in this month’s Radio Report:

MARTIN GARRIX featuring USHER – “Don’t Look Down” (April 7) (*)

It was last year that teenage Dutch DJ/producer Garrix took a fairly slow ride up to #12 on the pop survey with the instrumental titled “Animals”. How did he get some studio time with an R&B legend at his young age? No idea, but the unusual pair is working.

WIZ KHALIFA featuring CHARLIE PUTH – “See You Again” (April 7) (*)
Label: Atlantic/RRP
The soundtrack to Furious 7 debuted a few weeks ago, and “Again” is currently seeing traction at multiple formats in advance of the film’s premiere this Friday. It’s Puth’s radio debut here and could become Khalifa’s fifth main-credited top 40 track on CHR.

NE-YO – “Coming With You” (April 14) (*)
Label: Motown/Capitol
Despite a last-ditch attempt to save “She Knows” at pop radio amidst its negative callout scores, that single is tumbling down and brings us to the follow-up from Non-Fiction. It’s far from the ideal era, but some initial moderate airplay should carry it upward.

MARLON ROUDETTE – “When The Beat Drops Out” (April 21) (*)
Label: Columbia
The 32-year-old singer and songwriter from London saw his song “New Age” become a big single across Europe in 2011, but that never made it to the States. Now, coming off a U.K. top ten entry, Roudette is ready for his “Beat” to bring the heat this summer.

YEARS & YEARS – “King” (April 21) (*)
Label: Cherrytree/Interscope
Actor and singer Olly Alexander has been leading this trio for five years and their perseverance led them to a chart-topping song in the U.K. from just a few weeks ago. After a series of successful SXSW showcases, the royalty shall rule over the record charts.

GALANTIS – “Runaway (U & I)” (April 28) (*)
Label: Big Beat/Atlantic
Christian Karlsson and Linus Eklöw have been big as writers and in the dance world, but this marks their first song to go for adds here. “Runaway” was co-written by Cathy Dennis, who went to #1 on R&R’s CHR chart with 1991’s “Touch Me (All Night Long)”.

OLLY MURS featuring DEMI LOVATO – “Up” (April 28) (*)
Label: Syco/Columbia
“Wrapped Up” may have wrapped up its run in the U.S. without any big numbers, but “Up” has been waiting in the wings since it broke the top five (#4) in the U.K. in December of last year. At least this is enough to tide the Lovatics over until her next effort.

HALSEY – “Ghost” (April 7) (*)

19-year-old Ashley Frangipane has been honing her craft for some time now, but everything began to work out nicely during the past year as she signed her record deal and began getting regular play on SiriusXM’s Hits 1 channel. A spooky summer awaits us.

KAISER CHIEFS – “Falling Awake” (April 7) (**)
Label: ATO
The sounds of Education, Education, Education & War failed to light up the album and radio charts in the States like they did in Europe, but the quintet’s latest single might turn things around. It certainly blends in well with its hooky late 80’s pop influence.

JOY WILLIAMS – “Woman (Oh Mama)” (April 14) (**)
Label: Columbia
Her days in a duo are, sadly, finished for now, but we haven’t seen a solo set from Williams in some time. Well, that changes with Venus, due out this summer. The tribal pop sound of it may stand out next to her past work, but it’s a total jam and sounds fresh.

WOLF ALICE – “Moaning Lisa Smile” (April 7) (*)
Label: RCA
Here’s a buzzworthy band based in London who have several early supporters behind them at Alternative radio. However, it was the BBC station network that aided them across the pond. As far as a U.S. breakthrough, they’re hungry like the… oh, you know.

TWENTY ONE PILOTS – “Tear In My Heart” (April 14) (*)
Label: Fueled By Ramen/RRP
Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun are fairly local to Alternative radio after scoring with three top 40 singles from Vessel, including the #10’s “Holding On To You” and “House Of Gold”. Does this have the “Heart” to grow into their biggest song to date? Stay tuned!

KALEO – “All The Pretty Girls” (April 21) (**)
Label: Elektra/Atlantic
Iceland has given us a number of solid bands over the past few years, and this male quartet from the small southwestern town of Mosfellsbær may be the next to deliver a hit with their American debut. SiriusXM’s The Spectrum is leading the pack on “Girls”.

WALK OFF THE EARTH – “Rule The World” (April 28) (*)
Label: Columbia
Several years ago, this Canadian quintet built up a following on YouTube after posting a series of well-received cover videos. An album followed, R.E.V.O., and “Red Hands” spread across AAA and Hot AC radio. Their anthemic new single could do the same.

TURN IT UP TUESDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (March 31)

Looking for some “Sun” at the top.

Another month of the year is nearly done, which means a quarter of 2015 has come and gone. Crazy, right? Luckily, some solid releases are ready to close things out. Here are the albums and singles that are new in stores for the week of March 31:

• Kintsugi is the name of the latest effort for Washington rockers Death Cab For Cutie, and it marks a pretty big change for the group as longtime member Chris Walla decided to part ways with the act last year. Now playing as a trio, the guys look to land the fourth top five album of their career. Of course, it is led by “Black Sun”, which climbed to #1 on Triple A radio last week and is trending towards the top five on the Alternative survey. (iTunes)
• Inspired by a friendship with popular comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his series Seinfeld, American rapper Wale returns to the charts with The Album About Nothing, featuring the recent Urban radio single “The Body” (featuring Jeremih) and current hit “The Matrimony” (featuring Usher.) It is certainly a unique project that taps into multiple fan bases and this support should propel it to a top five debut next week. (iTunes)
• It was a very tight race on Country radio between two “Homegrown” titles recently, but Darius Rucker‘s “Homegrown Honey” made it to the top first and he’ll be bringing his Southern Style to the Billboard 200 next week. This makes three years in a row now that Rucker has released an album; last year, it was the seasonal Home For The Holidays. (iTunes)
• Three Days Grace recently scored a #1 song on the Active Rock chart with “I Am Machine”. The quartet’s fifth studio album, Human, their first to feature lead vocalist Matt Walst, is out this week. The guys have had three consecutive sets debut in the top five, and they’re hoping this will be their fourth. (iTunes)

Chart Notes:

• Two new songs break into the top ten on this week’s chart: “Nothing Without Love” bolts from 12-8 for Nate Ruess, the first release from his upcoming solo album. It’s currently in the top 40 at both Alternative and Hot AC radio and goes for adds at the CHR format on Tuesday. Rising 13-10 and earning their third top ten song from the album No Sound Without Silence, Irish trio The Script is as hot as ever with “Man On A Wire”. Also on the way up is this week’s Biggest Mover by Martin Luke Brown, “Take Out Of Me”. After debuting at #39, he climbs nine to #30 with the followup to “Nostalgia”.
• Speaking of “Nostalgia”, you may remember that the song was featured on BBC Radio 1 last October in their Introducing rotation slot, which gives a particular newcomer seven spins across all day parts during a given week. This past week, the slot was given to English singer and songwriter Matt Woods, originally from Cornwall, and now “In The Dark” comes in at #37 as the Highest Debut on the chart. You might remember that I wrote about “Dark” in January, followed by the cut “Impression” two weeks ago. Look for his debut EP at digital retail on April 20; it’s a winner.
• This June will mark the 20th anniversary since the theme song from the TV show Friends, “I’ll Be There For You” by Los Angeles duo The Rembrandts, spent an incredible eight weeks at #1 on the pop radio chart. Now, in 2015, we have the second single release from Eden XO, posing the question, “Wanna be Friends? Phoebe Buffay?” I suppose that my chart central doesn’t compare with Central Perk, but “The Weekend” is still a hot track and debuts at #39. It follows “Too Cool To Dance”, a #6 hit from last year.
• Serviced to Hot AC radio last week, though the band doesn’t seem to be acknowledging it yet, Parachute return with the  first single from a likely forthcoming album. It’s called “Crave” and it enters the countdown this week at #40. It was back in 2011 that they last charted as a quintet with “Kiss Me Slowly”, which climbed to #9. After three albums with Island and Mercury Records, they now find themselves (with a few lineup changes) at Vanguard. Look for more information soon.

TOP TEN: A New Direction

The Zayn event.

Yesterday, it was announced that Zayn Malik would be leaving the hugely successful boy band One Direction, which brings the act down to a quartet for the remainder of their current tour and forthcoming fifth studio album, which is expected out in the later part of the year. In a statement, Malik said, in part, that he is exiting to be “a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.” He also wishes his four bandmates well: “I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.” Of course, this led to immediate speculation that Malik could pursue a solo career and that the group of four could split entirely at some point, but let’s take the wait and see approach with those two thoughts. This is still fresh.

As a quintet, One Direction launched over a dozen singles into the top 40 on various charts around the world, including on my own chart. Though the future isn’t entirely clear, for the current time, these are the top ten songs (so far) from the former X Factor contestants on my top 40:

A “Town” For Two: Twice The Top 40 Titles

A toast to ghosts.

In the last day, it was announced that Adam Lambert‘s first single from his Warner Bros. debut, The Original High, is a song titled “Ghost Town”. It will be released on April 21. This comes at the same time that Madonna‘s current release, title stylized as “Ghosttown”, is charting at both AC and Hot AC radio outlets thanks to an iHeartMedia campaign that bares a similar feel to the one U2‘s “Every Breaking Wave” utilized from late last year to early this year. Needless to stay, the stan reaction has been mixed thus far, but I think we’ll all survive and both singles can co-exist together… right? Now, can they rank together?

(By the way, ghost towns are nothing new when it comes to the top 40; just ask “Ghost Town” by Cheap Trick, which hit #33 in late 1988. Yes, I know it’s not remembered well and I would be the one to cite that. Ghost Town DJ’s, anyone?)

So, with this case in mind, I figured we could take a look at some classic examples that put two singles with the same title, but a different composition, in the top 40 of the Hot 100 at the same time. It’s pretty rare, but the few times it’s happened are pretty interesting to any chart buff. Here are some of the notable ones:

“Crazy Love” (April 7, 1979)
Poco (#33) (Peak: #17) (Listen)
The Allman Brothers Band (#39) (Peak: #29) (Listen)

The first documented case of this occurrence goes back nearly 36 years to when these two bands appeared with their hit songs in the top 40 for just one frame. At the time, it was a pretty remarkable chart achievement given the turnover rate and heavier competition during those disco days. Both acts would score their final hits in the next decade, the former after nearly a decade away from the top 40.

“Don’t Be Cruel” (August 20, 1988)

Bobby Brown (#38) (Peak: #8) (Listen)

Here’s what may be the most unusual case of the ones presented here. Both “Cruel” cuts debuted in the top 40 during the same week and next to each other! For two weeks in October, they both resided in the top ten, including a week when the former fell to #9, while the latter jumped to #8 (October 22, 1988). Of course, the band covered an Elvis Presley tune, while Brown’s hit was an original song.

Much like the previous 1988 example, these two female groups both crossed paths in the top ten later that summer and spent a week back-to-back for the chart date of June 30, 1990 (the former down to #5, while the latter climbed to #6.) Both California acts were on the Hot 100 with their debut singles and the trio and quartet, respectively, would have a number of other songs in the top five nationally.

Snoop Dogg featuring Pharrell and Uncle Charlie Wilson (#37) (Peak: #6) (Listen)

It was during the first weeks of 2003 that the pop chanteuse shined with her strong multi-format ballad, a song that would turn into one of the biggest singles of her career. However, when the big Dogg comes barking into town, people will be tuning in. So, both appeared in the top 40 together through mid-May. On CHR radio, Aguilera’s hit spent four weeks at #1, while the trio just broke into the top 30.

Besides the chart collisions listed above, several other CHR radio only chart events happened, including two “Runaway” songs in October 1995 by Janet Jackson (#2) (Listen) and The Corrs (#37) (Listen) as well as two “Stop” songs in June 1998 from Meredith Brooks (#36) (Listen) and the Spice Girls (#38) (Listen). TURN IT UP MONDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (March 23)

Down by the Bay.

A handful of promising newcomers and a family friendly soundtrack with some big name stars lead the pack of the week’s fresh releases. (NOTE: some items may not be available until Tuesday based on label response status, but most should be up for sale today.) Here are the albums and singles that are new in stores for the week of March 23:

• Already charting well all over Europe is the debut album from James Bay, Chaos And The Calm. Bay’s first single from the set was largely ignored by AAA, “Let It Go”, but the second release from it, “Hold Back The River”, is gaining ground at several radio formats. Thanks to strong pre-order numbers, aided by iTunes’s First Play program for albums, it might have a chance to be next week’s top debut. Even if it isn’t, look for a significant entry. (iTunes)
• Featuring new cuts from artists like Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna, the soundtrack to the DreamWorks film Home will be moving into its new home on the charts real soon. “Towards The Sun” from the latter artist is the set’s first single, but with “FourFiveSeconds” still dominating in the top ten, its radio airtime is limited. Sales may spike on the weekend if the movie performs well at the box office. (iTunes)
• You know his #1 single on the Alternative chart from last year titled “Dangerous”, and now Alan Wilkis, better known as Big Data, releases 2.0. The set is largely a collection of collaborations, including the aforementioned hit with Joywave and tracks with Kimbra, Rivers Cuomo and more. The current single from it is “The Business Of Emotion”, featuring White Sea. (iTunes)
• The legendary Van Morrison returns with Duets: Re-Working The Catalogue, featuring new versions of album cuts as done with Joss Stone, Michael Bublé and more. Though the songs are not as well-known, that’s not stopping a strong physical pre-order peak on sites like Amazon. (iTunes)

Chart Notes:

• Leading off this week’s top ten is the first hit for Scott Helman, “Bungalow”, up 12-10 in its 11th week. The song is now in the top 40 across three formats up north after first breaking on the Alternative airwaves. Helman is the first Canadian newcomer to reach my top ten since the Toronto group MAGIC! entered the region with “Rude” in January of last year. That song topped out at #2 for a week. We’ll see if the singer, based in the same city, can match or eclipse that peak.
• This week’s Highest Debut is the second charting single for English singer/songwriter Martin Luke Brown. His recent top ten hit “Nostalgia” is still making its home in the top 20 as “Take Out Of Me” bows in at #39 after a video premiere in the earlier part of the week. The single and title track from Brown’s forthcoming EP is due in his native U.K. on April 26, though a U.S. release date has yet to be announced. (Let’s hope that it’s real soon!)
• A new quartet who call themselves Causes have a song that keeps on growing in The Netherlands titled “Teach Me How To Dance With You”, and that tune now enters on my chart at #40. Though it has yet to be picked up here, it is available for download and it sure sounds like it could do something. Lead singer Rupert Blackman, originally from London, was a solo act for a few years before the band formed.

TURN IT UP TUESDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (March 17)

The “Butterfly” effect.

As the SXSW festivities get people loaded into Austin, the album chart is about to get loaded with a number of big releases. It’s certainly a diverse list, much like the conference. Here are the albums and singles that are new in stores for the week of March 17:

• It was quite a roller coaster ride last night as Kendrick Lamar‘s To Pimp A Butterfly album was uploaded, then erased and then uploaded again at iTunes in multiple versions, followed by Spotify, Amazon and other retailers. It appears that everything is now in place for proper sales and data numbers to take effect and the album will almost certainly be at the top of next week’s Billboard 200. Given the early kerfuffle, it’s unclear just how well this will do, but plan on some good commercial and critical love. (iTunes)
• Moved up after an album leak several weeks ago, Welsh singer and songwriter Marina & The Diamonds is back with FROOT, her first album since 2012. No singles have been issued to radio from the set, but several songs blasted into the top ten on iTunes upon their release. Look for the album to easily rank in the top ten (or even top five) when the official results are revealed. (iTunes)
• Currently on top of the Alternative chart with “Lampshades On Fire”, their second #1 at the format and first in 11 years, Washington rockers Modest Mouse make their return with Strangers To Ourselves. Amazingly, this is their first set in eight long years. Despite a delay of two weeks from its original date, this should have a strong finish. (iTunes)
• The soundtrack from Furious 7 is out this week, notable as the final film appearance of actor Paul Walker, who died in a car accident in late 2013. The album features many urban acts, including rapper Wiz Khalifa‘s single “See You Again”, featuring newcomer Charlie Puth. The movie opens in two weeks. (iTunes)
• Sleeping With Sirens had a real breakout with their last album, Feel, and after a change in label, they’re now out with Madness. Given how popular the instant grat cuts from this have been over the past few weeks, another top ten debut is likely for them. (iTunes)
• Other releases out this week include: Great Good Fine OK‘s 2M2H (EP) (iTunes), Liz Longley‘s Liz Longley (iTunes), Marcus Miller‘s Afrodeezia (iTunes), Mark Knopfler‘s Tracker (iTunes), Passion‘s Even So Come (Live) (iTunes), Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield‘s Sing Elliott Smith (iTunes), Tobias Jesso Jr.‘s Goon (iTunes) and Twin Shadow‘s Eclipse (iTunes).

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:
