Chart Notes:

• A huge congrats to Niall Horan, who scores his third solo chart-topper in a row with “Too Much To Ask”, moving 2-1 after a long run of five weeks in the runner-up position. Horan previously scored #1 hits with “This Town” and “Slow Hands”, the latter of which was recently named the top title on my Top 100 of 2017. (It spent seven weeks at the top in July and August.) Meanwhile, three new songs jump into the top ten this week, all by international acts: Calum Scott (up 11-8 with “You Are The Reason”) and Bastille (up 12-10 with “World Gone Mad”) come from England, and Sheppard (up 13-9 with “Coming Home”) formed in Australia. Get out your pop passports — Adam’s Top 40 is taking over the world. Maybe.
• A pair of new songs launch into the top 40 at the end of this calendar year, with Serena Ryder‘s “Ice Age” (#37) and John Splithoff‘s “Sing To You” (#39) breaking into the countdown. For Ryder, her latest single is the third one to be issued from the album Utopia, which also provided us with 2016’s “Got Your Number” (#2) and 2017’s “Electric Love” (#13). Newcomer Splithoff and “Sing” actually appeared on a list I compiled at the end of 2016 as one of the top 30 independent tracks of that year. (Of course, if you know my work with Train Tracks, I gave the song its first airplay in May 2016.) The single impacts at Hot AC radio on January 22 via Asylum Records.

ADAM’S TOP 100 OF 2017: Part Five, 5-1

The top five is here on Adam’s Top 100 of 2017! Can you believe it? Out of all the songs that came out in 2017, these five had the biggest impact on me and my personal chart. So, for the last day, here’s the conclusion of Adam’s Top 100 of 2017…

The 2017 chart year encompasses a period of 52 weekly surveys from the chart dated December 4, 2016 to the chart dated November 26, 2017. Peaks listed reflect the highest position reached by the final list of this period. For any ties in points, a song with a higher peak is listed first, and further ties are broken by the weeks charted in the top 40 and top ten. 176 titles had at least one point qualify towards the year-end chart, an increase from the 168 that did so in 2016.

05. JULIA MICHAELS, “Issues”

This year marked Michaels’s transition from hit songwriter to hit singer, as the 24-year-old performer had no issues making her first run up my chart a very memorable one! Not only did “Issues” spend a week at #1 in April, as well as 13 weeks in the top ten and 25 in the top 40, but Michaels also becomes the highest-ranking woman on my year-end chart. Not a bad way to end 2017, right? Though her follow-up singles haven’t been nearly as successful, the Best New Artist nominee is still slaying.

04. BLEACHERS, “Don’t Take The Money”

After three consecutive chart-toppers with the trio fun., Jack Antonoff and Bleachers returned to #1 on my personal chart in May 2014 with “I Wanna Get Better”. Things got even better for the multi-talented writer, producer and musician in the last year, with three of his co-writes/productions (songs for Lorde, ZAYN & Taylor Swift and Swift solo) spending time at #1 between February and October. Of course, that doesn’t even include his own lead single from Gone Now, which had a pretty solid five-week run during the month of May and early June. I’m sure Antonoff will continue to make great music next year.

03. SHAWN MENDES, “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back”
Album: Illuminate (Deluxe)
Label: Island/Republic
Peak: #1 for three weeks
Weeks: 27
Points: 762

I’ll admit it: I wasn’t a fan of “Life Of The Party”. I didn’t really get it at the time, and it still doesn’t get much play at all from me now. Luckily, since that release, Mendes has been making the case for me to stan for his singles, and this song got plenty of love on the countdown earlier this year. Taken from a reissue of his chart-topping Illuminate album, “Nothing” held at #1 for three weeks on my chart and spent 27 weeks in the top 40, making it the teenager’s first #1 and longest-running single of his career so far on Adam’s Top 40. With 2018 just around the corner, will Mendes strike again with another #1 on my chart or even several chart-topping hits from an upcoming release? Nothing’s been announced yet, so stay tuned for more details.

02. RAG’N’BONE MAN, “Human”
Album: Human

Peak: #1 for six weeks
Weeks: 29 (25 applied to 2017 ranking)
Points: 770

Prior to 2016, I didn’t know much about Rory Graham or his music. However, when I first listened to “Human” sometime in September of last year, as it crossed over to the many European charts, I knew it was meant to be a worldwide hit. Though it did spend several weeks at #1 on the Alternative and Triple A charts here, it could’ve done way better at other radio formats. Alas, I’m biased. The musical monster that is “Human” spent six weeks at the top of my chart in January and February, with a total of 29 weeks in the top 40, a run that began in November 2016. Two follow-up singles from the Human album, “Skin” and “Grace (We All Try)”, failed to enter my list, though the former track did achieve some moderate success in a handful of countries. (Don’t call him a one-hit wonder yet, kids.) Though it fell short of the top spot on my year-end Top 100, “Human” remains a winner in my book, a very strong runner-up that will certainly get some play for me for some time to come.

01. NIALL HORAN, “Slow Hands”

If you’ve been watching my chart closely over the last year, you knew that One Direction‘s Niall Horan was on my radar in a big way. Two of his singles with the group, 2013’s “Story Of My Life” and 2015’s “Drag Me Down”, reached #1 on my chart. Then, in December of last year, “This Town” landed at the summit for one week. However, as much as I like the guy’s music, I never expected the young Irish singer/songwriter to dominate the summer months and the year with a dirty little ditty like this. At seven weeks on top, “Slow” was the longest-running #1 song of 2017, narrowly missing out on 30 weeks inside of the top 40. The big question now, of course, is will “Too Much To Ask” hit #1 after seemingly stalling at #2 for weeks now? Can’t say I have a definitive answer to that yet, but we’ll all know soon enough. For now, I’m so glad that Horan gave the world the quality singles and album (and tour) that he did in 2017; he really delivered in every aspect. Now, enshrined in the great hall of musical memories and spectacular singles, hangs a special recognition of the bop that was (and is) “Slow Hands”, proudly taking the title of my #1 song of Adam’s Top 100 of 2017.

The triumphant return of Kesha to my top 40 chart was one of the top comebacks of 2017, and what an emotional single she shared with the world on July 6. With four weeks at #1 from late August to mid-September, and its #10 ranking on my year-end countdown, the lead single from Rainbow (which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200) was embraced by many listeners.

09. ED SHEERAN, “Castle On The Hill”

Sheeran’s highest entry of four on my year-end chart made its debut on January 6, the same date as “Shape Of You”, though its run into the runner-up spot (the only #2 song ranking in my top ten) took it much higher than “Shape”, which burned on me shortly after hitting the top ten. Sheeran’s most recent single, “Perfect”, is at #1 on the newest Billboard Hot 100 update.

08. HARRY STYLES, “Sign Of The Times”

“Sign” marks the first of three entries in the top ten by members of the original One Direction lineup gone solo. Styles has plenty to be thankful for this year: his album debuted at #1 in many countries, including the U.S., his tour continues to have a successful run, and, more importantly, he lands at #8 on my Top 100 of 2017! “Sign” had a single week on top of my chart, after settling for five weeks at #2 behind an entry that’s still to come in the top ten. In a world full of pop, Styles really rocks.

07. ZAYN & TAYLOR SWIFT, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever”

In a move that shook the Twitterverse, this collaboration, the highest track from a movie on my year-end survey, debuted as a surprise in the early hours of December 9 of last year. The single spent a heartbreaking five weeks at #2 on the Top 40 list, just short of making it the first male/female duet from a motion picture to go to #1 at the format since 1993’s “A Whole New World” by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle. (That giant ballad, from Disney’s Aladdin, spent three weeks at #1 on R&R.)

06. MUNA, “I Know A Place”

The highest entry by a female duo/group on this year’s survey comes from the California trio of Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson. Though they narrowly missed my chart in 2016 with “Loudspeaker”, their second radio single was a total bop with a great message. “Know” spent two weeks at #1 on my list in March, while also spending two non-consecutive weeks at #40 on the Hot AC chart in April. They have yet to chart with a follow-up, but their album is one of this year’s best.

As 2017 draws to a close, it’s time for the annual Top 100 of the year! According to my tabulations, these titles ranked as the most successful on my personal chart. 2017 was certainly a year of considerable change in many different industries: media, politics, etc., and that change was reflected in much of the music that was released this year. In fact, “Never Change” gives a new Irish duo, Picture This, their first song to reach my year-end survey. Luckily, “Love” was still felt throughout the year, featured in the titles of songs from Andy Grammer, John Mayer, Kelly Clarkson and more. “Money” was on the mind of Jack Antonoff from Bleachers, as well as the four guys from Foster The People. You already know that I played songs from Harry Styles and Paramore about a million “Times”, while Lorde and MUNA found “Places” to rest on the survey earlier this year, but where will they “Place” here?

ADAM’S TOP 100 OF 2017: Part One, 100-61

As 2017 draws to a close, it’s time for the annual Top 100 of the year! According to my tabulations, these titles ranked as the most successful on my personal chart. 2017 was certainly a year of considerable change in many different industries: media, politics, etc., and that change was reflected in much of the music that was released this year. In fact, “Never Change” gives a new Irish duo, Picture This, their first song to reach my year-end survey. Luckily, “Love” was still felt throughout the year, featured in the titles of songs from Andy Grammer, John Mayer, Kelly Clarkson and more. “Money” was on the mind of Jack Antonoff from Bleachers, as well as the four guys from Foster The People. You already know that I played songs from Harry Styles and Paramore about a million “Times”, while Lorde and MUNA found “Places” to rest on the survey earlier this year, but where will they “Place” here?

The 2017 chart year encompasses a period of 52 weekly surveys from the chart dated December 4, 2016 to the chart dated November 26, 2017. Peaks listed reflect the highest position reached by the final list of this period. For any ties in points, a song with a higher peak is listed first, and further ties are broken by the weeks charted in the top 40 and top ten. 176 titles had at least one point qualify towards the year-end chart, an increase from the 168 that did so in 2016.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (December 17, 2017)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Before we head into the holiday break and a short rest from the Sunday report, it’s time to report on those frosty finds one more time for 2017:

MERRY CAMILA-MAS: Gaining over 300 spins again this week, Camila Cabello‘s “Havana” is still a smash at Top 40 radio, as the Young Thug-assisted single stays at #1 for the fourth week in a row. “Havana” is nearly 2,800 spins ahead of this week’s #2 hit by Ed Sheeran, “Perfect”, which leaps from 4-2 with an impressive 2,000 spin increase. I’m sure Santa will have both tunes on top of his pop playlist, as he travels the globe with his trusty reindeer about a week from now. As the annual freeze overtakes the top 40, it’s unclear what week “Perfect” will swap places with “Havana”, but it should be on top by our first report of 2018.

Cabello’s new one, “Never Be The Same”, is looking at some great early numbers, as it soars into the top 50 at #44 this week. The hit was last week’s runner-up title on the Most Added report at pop radio, and when stations begin reporting adds again in January, the rest of the panel is likely to catch out quickly. Camila is due January 12, which should almost certainly debut at #1 on the album list. (By the way, Cabello’s entry is not a hot Christopher Cross remake, but his song of the same name spent two weeks at #3 on R&R in November 1980.

THE PRICE IS BRIGHT: With the first pop chart arrival from the soundtrack to Netflix’s Bright, “Home”, which enters at #45 on the current survey, teams Machine Gun Kelly, X Ambassadors and Bebe Rexha for their first collaboration together. The film debuts on the service this Friday. Another release from the project, Bastille‘s “World Gone Mad”, is up a single notch from 18-17 on the Alternative chart. It’s hard to tell what kind of longevity the movie will have, given the unconventional launch of it at a busy time of the year, but the response so far to the tracks from it seems to indicate that, at the very least, the soundtrack will have some life at digital retail.

Further down the list, Eminem‘s recent Revival set provides us with a second top 50 song in “River”, featuring the aforementioned Sheeran, which comes in at #46. The rapper peaked at #41 two weeks ago with the Beyoncé-assisted “Walk On Water”. His newest set is expected to debut at or near the top of the Billboard 200 list, though it’ll do so with a significantly smaller sales frame than the majority of his catalog sold in their first weeks on sale. One notch lower, we find Louis Tomlinson and “Miss You”, new a #47. It’s likely to become the one-time One Direction member’s third solo top 40 single at the format in the new year, assuming it survives the dreaded holiday freeze.
