Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. From L.A. to Peru, these songs are moving at the pop format:

MAXIMIZING “ME” TIME: 2022 is starting off well for superstar Adele, as she continues at #1 on the Top 40 chart for a sixth week with “Easy On Me”. It remains more than 1,700 spins ahead of the song at #2.

Taken from his new album Dawn FM, The Weeknd scores his 23rd top 40 hit at the format with “Sacrifice”, entering at #37 this week. This entry is unrelated to the Bebe Rexha song of the same name that charted last spring or the Elton John song interpolated in his current hit “Cold Heart”, which holds at #9 on the list. Up from 43-39, the late Juice WRLD and Justin Bieber are in with “Wandered To LA”, giving the two men their fourth and 38th top 40 singles, respectively. It’s included on the posthumous album Fighting Demons, which peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 last month.

Three singles appear in the top 50 for the first time this week: “When I’m Gone” is the highest of the new entries, as Alesso and Katy Perry start at #45. ALYA is at #46 with “Pleasure Is Mine”, while Fireboy DML brings some heat at #49 with the Ed Sheeran-assisted “Peru”.

Chart Notes:

• As we open the window to the latest edition of my personal chart, Silk Sonic earns a second week at the top spot with “Smokin’ Out The Window”. It’s the third hit in a row from An Evening With Silk Sonic and the duo’s second #1 song thus far. Alesso and Katy Perry are up nine notches from 35-26 with “When I’m Gone”, the Biggest Mover on the chart. There are three new entries this week: the highest of them comes from Lauren Spencer-Smith, a newcomer and American Idol alum who bows at #33 with “Fingers Crossed”. Her release had a very successful teaser run on TikTok that began in late November, coupled with an impressive launch for the full song several days ago. Entering at #37, Ben Rector is back on the chart with “Living My Best Life”, the radio single from his upcoming album The Joy Of Music. The set features interesting collaborations with Dave Koz, Kenny G, Snoop Dogg and others. Finally, Maren Morris checks in at #38 with “Circles Around This Town”. It impacts at the Country radio format on Monday.

Chart Notes:

• After stalling at #2 in October with “Skate”, the duo Silk Sonic bounces from 2-1 with “Smokin’ Out The Window”, the second #1 single from An Evening With Silk Sonic on my personal chart. The first, “Leave The Door Open”, led my list for three weeks last May. Speaking of threes, that also happens to be the number of debuts this week: new at #35, Alesso and Katy Perry dance in with “When I’m Gone”, the top entry on the chart. With her recent viral hit from TikTok, Sadie Jean starts at #39 with “WYD Now?”, her first top 40 song. The reunited Big Time Rush is also new this week with their first charting tune since the fall of 2012: “Call It Like I See It” is in at #40.

Adam’s Top 100 of 2021: The Complete List

2021: it was the rollercoaster ride that we didn’t need after the year that was 2020. There were plenty of strange events that occurred in the last twelve months, but here’s one that I think we can celebrate for the time being. Yes, my Top 100 of 2021 is now available below.

When it came to the music on my personal chart, 2021 was a particularly good year for good song titles: six of them rank in the top 100, including “Damn It Feels Good To Be Me”, “Good 4 U” and “We’re Good”. We also felt the force of three powerful pop releases: “Higher Power”, “Solar Power” and “Your Power”. Of course, there was a lot of love on the charts as well, including singles like “Can You Handle My Love??”, “Love Again”, “Talk About Love” and more. From “Cloudy Day” to “Remember That Night?” and “Drivers License” to “Last Train Home”, there was much to discover and enjoy on my record player, the radio, streaming platforms and, of course, TikTok.

So, after crunching all the numbers up, here are the top 100 songs based on my weekly personal chart:

The 2021 chart year encompasses a period of 52 weekly surveys from the chart dated December 6, 2020 to the chart dated November 28, 2021. Peaks noted for each entry reflect the highest position reached by the final list of this period. For any ties in points, an entry with the highest peak is listed first, and further ties are broken by the weeks at a song’s peak position and the amount of time charted in the top 40. 162 entries had at least one point qualify towards the year-end chart, a small decrease from the 166 that did so in 2020. A total of 14 titles reached the #1 spot for at least one week this year, up one from the 13 that achieved the feat in 2020.

“EASY” TO PIVOT: As radio shifts from seasonal to year-end programming, Adele holds at #1 on the Top 40 radio chart for a fourth week in a row with “Easy On Me”. The song is still in the top ten at four separate formats: AC, Hot AC, R&B (formerly Urban AC) and Top 40.

Format star Doja Cat scores her ninth top 40 hit with “Woman”, soaring from 41-33 this week. It’s the fourth single to chart from her album Planet Her. Rising from 46-38, “Merry Christmas” goes on a sleigh ride up the survey for Ed Sheeran and Elton John. It’s the 24th top 40 song for Sheeran and the 48th for John when combining the archives of both Mediabase and Radio & Records since late 1973. • The weather may be getting colder, but Adele‘s hot streak at the top continues with “Easy On Me”, which leads my personal chart for a fifth week in a row. She is also on the way up the chart with “Oh My God”, which launches into the top ten with a move from 12-8. Taylor Swift earns the Biggest Mover this week, up from 39-31 with her re-recorded version of “All Too Well”. Coming in at #38, comedian and host Jimmy Fallon has the top new entry on the countdown with his Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion-assisted “It Was A… (Masked Christmas)”. From the upcoming movie Marry Me, Jennifer Lopez enters at #39 with “On My Way”, her first song affiliated with a film in which she appears in to chart since 2002’s “Alive”, which was written for Enough. Lastly, “Crisis” debuts at #40 for Joshua Bassett, best known for his role in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Newcomer GAYLE blasts into the top 40 with her recent viral TikTok hit, as “Abcdefu” rises from 42-25. The tune continues a strong run on both the streaming and composite charts internationally, appearing in the top ten throughout Australasia and Europe. GAYLE is not the only new artist in the top 40 this week, as American Idol alum Benson Boone leaps from 45-37 with “Ghost Town”. His first charting song is yet another success story for the video app, where Boone teased it before its official release. LISA secures her first solo hit outside of the popular group BLACKPINK with “Money”, up from 41-38 this week. Finally, Charli XCX jumps from 43-40 with “Good Ones”, her seventh top 40 hit to date at the format.

19 years after his first single was serviced to Top 40 radio stations, comedian and host Jimmy Fallon appears in the top 50 for his first time with the Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion-assisted “It Was A… (Masked Christmas)”, which checks in at #46. A second seasonal song is in at #47: “Merry Christmas”, a recent #1 single in the United Kingdom, which teams Ed Sheeran and Elton John. Now ranking in the top 20 at the Dance radio format, “The Motto” lands at #48 on the Top 40 survey for Tiësto and Ava Max. Finally, at #50, Wale and J. Cole are in with “Poke It Out”, a current top ten hit at the Rhythmic and Urban radio formats.

For some big energy and bigger chart releases, let’s see what’s popping at the format this week:

LOVING IS EASY: With her fifth #1 single at the Top 40 format and her 15th week atop the chart since 2011, superstar Adele leads the list with “Easy On Me”. The song has already hit the top of the AC and Hot AC radio charts.

Of note in the top ten, Elton John and Dua Lipa move from 11-10 with “Cold Heart”. At age 74, John is now the oldest performer to have a top ten hit at the format. It’s his first song to reach the region since 1994’s “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”, which spent a total of five weeks at #3 that July and August.

In 2006, the group Cherish spent two weeks at #6 that August with “Do It To It”. This week, they return to the top 40 for the first time in 13 years with a new version of that track as remixed by producer ACRAZE. Up from 42-35, it’s his first top 40 hit and the fourth for Cherish. At last, Blxst moves from 41-38 for the Ty Dolla $ign and Tyga-assisted “Chosen”. It’s their first, ninth and eighth top 40 hits, respectively. It ranks at #1 on both the Rhythmic and Urban charts this week.

Newcomer GAYLE takes her recent viral TikTok hit into the top 50 this week, as “Abcdefu” enters at #42. The song impacts at the format on Tuesday. Next, Latto checks in at #49 with “Big Energy”, which currently appears at #6 at the Rhythmic format. It’s the latest chart single to sample “Genius Of Love”, which charted below the top 30 at the pop format for the Tom Tom Club in the spring of 1982. Lastly, at #50, Ed Sheeran earns his third chart entry from the = album with “Overpass Graffiti”.
