RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 13, 2022)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. This week’s chart may be the sweetest of the month…

YOU’VE GOT GAYLE: 17-year-old GAYLE spends a third (and likely final) week at #1 on the Top 40 radio chart with “Abcdefu”. The single is headed for the top of the Hot AC chart, advancing from 5-3 this week.

The latest baked treat served hot and fresh on the chart is “Sweetest Pie”, a collaboration from Megan Thee Stallion and Dua Lipa at #33. It’s their seventh and 17th top 40 hits at the format, respectively. Em Beihold rises from 41-36 with her viral hit “Numb Little Bug”, her first top 40 hit ever. Lastly, Tyga and Doja Cat jump from 47-40 with “Freaky Deaky”. Not so freaky: it’s the tenth top 40 single for both artists.

A couple of buzzing collaborations lead some entries in the top 50 this week: newcomer Omah Lay and chart regular Justin Bieber land at #46 with “Attention”, while Latin stars Becky G and Karol G start at #47 with “Mamiii”. The forecast also looks solid for Eddie Benjamin and “Weatherman”, which becomes his first chart entry at #49.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 6, 2022)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. This week’s chart isn’t a complete mess, but one new entry is…

ABCDEF-TWO: 17-year-old GAYLE scores a second week at #1 on the Top 40 radio chart with “Abcdefu”, the first hit from A Study Of The Human Experience (Volume One), an EP due on March 18. It also ranks at #5 on this week’s Hot AC chart and #14 at the Alternative format.

Three songs charge into the top 40 this week: leading the pack, Camila Cabello and Ed Sheeran enter at #35 with “Bam Bam”, the second top 40 single from her forthcoming Familia album. The collaboration marks the 16th top 40 entry for Cabello as a solo artist and the 26th for Sheeran, who has three titles on the chart. Next, 5 Seconds Of Summer returns to the top 40 for the first time in two years with “Complete Mess”, new at #37. It’s the group’s 12th top 40 song to date, which isn’t messy whatsoever. Finally, Kygo and DNCE have all the right moves with “Dancing Feet”, which spins and sways from 49-38. It’s their eighth and sixth top 40 entries, respectively.

Aiming for her second top 40 entry, singer Mimi Webb lands at #46 with “House On Fire”, a recent top ten hit in the U.K. and Ireland. New at #47, “Freaky Deaky” teams Tyga and Doja Cat, a collaboration which also makes the top 40 at the Rhythmic radio format. Finally, after a major resurgence on TikTok, “Lost” debuts at #49 for Frank Ocean. The popular cut can originally be found on 2012’s channel ORANGE.

Chart Notes:

  • This week’s chart update doesn’t feel like a ghost town, even if the new #1 song is about one. American Idol alum Benson Boone earns his first #1 on my personal chart with “Ghost Town”, moving from 2-1 in its 16th week on the chart. While that may seem like a slow run, Boone’s song has been riding in the top five for the past ten weeks, stalling at #3 for six of them. Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift leap 12 notches to #19 with this week’s Biggest Mover: their duet version of “The Joker And The Queen”. A pair of new tunes enter the top 40: at #36, Mimi Webb burns onto the survey with “House On Fire”, while newcomer Dove Cameron is flying in at #40 with “Boyfriend”.

Chart Notes:

  • Despite losing its bullet, “Oh My God” holds at #1 on my personal chart for a third week, as Adele and her hit face some challenges from tracks by artists like Benson Boone, GAYLE and Lauren Spencer-Smith. Newcomer Em Beihold climbs up the chart from 40-28 with the TikTok-fueled “Numb Little Bug”, making it the Biggest Mover within the countdown. Two titles are new this week: at #31, “The Joker And The Queen” pairs Ed Sheeran with longtime friend and collaborator Taylor Swift. The original solo version of the tune can be found on his album =, which topped the Billboard 200 chart during the fall. Further down, Tate McRae enters at #35 with “She’s All I Wanna Be”, which officially impacts at the Top 40 radio format (along with the Sheeran and Swift collaboration) on Tuesday.

Chart Notes:

  • Adele joins Dua Lipa as the only artists to score ten #1 songs on my personal chart, as “Oh My God” advances from 2-1 this week. This marks the second #1 hit from the album 30, with “Easy On Me” remaining at #4 after a six-week run at the summit. Kacey Musgraves takes the Biggest Mover title for a second consecutive week, as “Camera Roll” makes a picture-perfect move from 28-18. Three songs are new to the countdown this week, all by male singers who have reached the #1 spot at least twice: George Ezra at #34 with “Anyone For You”, Michael Bublé at #39 with “I’ll Never Not Love You” and Darren Hayes at #40 with “Let’s Try Being In Love”.
