RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (May 27, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Enjoy all the Memorial Day festivities! The charts don’t sleep for a holiday, so let’s check out all the action:

RETURN TO “NEVER” LAND: Camila Cabello‘s “Never Be The Same” holds at #1 for the fourth week on the Top 40 list, but a tight battle ensued between it and former chart-topper “The Middle”, from Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey, as a number of bigger hits continued to decline over the holiday weekend. As the result, the two tracks landed less than 100 spins from one another. A new #1 is likely in the next week or two, with “Psycho” (up 8-4) by Post Malone featuring Ty Dolla $ign currently in the lead. “Never” is still making moves on the Hot AC list, rising 5-3 this week, though most observers will now be focused on her duet with Pharrell Williams, “Sangria Wine”, which sports a solid gain below the top 50 at the Top 40 format (and could enter as early as next week.)

HOW LO CAN THEY GO?: Four new titles reach the top 40 this week, led by the comeback single “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” by Backstreet Boys, up 48-33 to become their 19th top 40 entry at this format since 1995. (You’ll find additional chart data on the other entries from Cardi B, Logan Henderson and Bryce Vine on our socials!) Meanwhile, three songs come into the top 50 on the newest update, led by “Dinero” from Jennifer Lopez at #43. The collaboration, which features DJ Khaled and the previously mentioned Cardi B, is now Lopez’s highest-charting song since 2014. Five spots lower, K-pop sensations BTS score their second top 50 hit with “Fake Love”. The seven man band’s #48 entry comes two weeks before their single’s official impact date at the format. In at #49 is the week’s final new song, “Jump” by singer and songwriter Julia Michaels. She has three top 40 tunes to date. The track features chart newcomer Trippie Redd, who is known for a handful of collaborations and features in the rap field.

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of October 27, 2017

A meaningful new release.

It’s the last Friday music update before Halloween… who’s going to serve the treats this week? Put on your costume and find out, because here are the eerie albums and spooky singles you need to know:

KELLY CLARKSON – Meaning Of Life (iTunes)
The most Kelegendary release this week, to no one’s surprise, is the latest album from the original American Idol herself. The set is led by “Love So Soft”, which is approaching the top ten at Hot AC radio, while also ranking on the AC and Top 40 charts. Three of her studio albums have hit #1 since 2003, but the competition is tough this time, as you’ll see below. Still, it should have a nice opening week.

YO GOTTI – I Still Am (iTunes)
Featuring the Nicki Minaj-assisted “Rake It Up”, which recently hit #1 on both Rhythmic and Urban radio, this rapper could be looking at his second top five album next week. His previous release, 2016’s The Art Of Hustle, debuted and peaked at #4. (You’ll recall the big single from that set was “Down In The DM”, with Minaj appearing on a remix of it.)

THEORY OF A DEADMAN – Wake Up Call (iTunes)
Currently at #1 on the Active Rock list with their biggest hit in several years, “Rx (Medicate)”, the Canadian group just celebrated the 15th anniversary of their self-titled debut album. Their last two studio albums have peaked at #8 on the Billboard 200.

KENNY CHESNEY – Live In No Shoes Nation: 10 Years Of Concerts (iTunes)
Chesney’s double album is in the mix for #1, due in large part to a stadium tour bundle that allows buyers to get a physical album for every seat purchased online. His “All The Pretty Girls” recently topped the Country radio list.

TURN IT UP TUESDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (January 21)

Gram bam, thank you, ma'am.

And the winner is…

In the middle of GRAMMY Week on the blog, let’s take a breather to see what’s new in stores this week. After all, the schedule goes on. Here are all the releases you need to know about for January 21:

  • This one is perhaps a little obvious, but the 2014 GRAMMY Nominees compilation is out today. It features top hits from Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry and more, who could all be big winners come Sunday night. Look for it to debut somewhere in the top 5, if not top ten. (iTunes)
  • Here’s a fabulous collection for the Fab Four fan (say that three times fast.) The Beatles release The U.S. Albums collection, featuring all 13 of their Stateside-issued LPs with their original artwork, tracklistings and edits on top of remastered sound quality and more. All 13 are also being rereleased individually. With a hefty price tag, it may not debut the highest, but it sure is a treat. (iTunes)
  • I just reviewed their album last week; now, duo A Great Big World are out with Is There Anybody Out There?, their debut release for Epic Records. It features their hit duet with Christina Aguilera, “Say Something”. Given their newfound coverage, it could surprise on the charts. For now, I’ll say a top ten debut with potential to go higher. (iTunes)
  • Indie rockers Young The Giant are out with their second album, Mind Over Matter, their first since 2010. Lead single “It’s About Time” is currently top ten on Alternative radio. (iTunes)
  • Other albums out this week include Aer‘s Aer (iTunes), Against Me!‘s Transgender Dysphoria Blues (iTunes), Graham Colton‘s Lonely Ones (iTunes), Los Lonely Boys‘s Revelation (iTunes), Mogwai‘s Rave Tapes (iTunes), Scorpions‘s MTV Unplugged (iTunes) and Ty Dolla $ign‘s Beach House (EP). (iTunes)

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:

  • “All The Way”, a fresh track from the duo Timeflies. (iTunes)
  • “Blue Moon”, a new single from rocker Beck. (iTunes)
  • “Free/Into The Mystic”, a live medley from Zac Brown Band and Clare Bowen from Nashville. (iTunes)
  • “How I Feel (Remixes)”, a new six-song package from rapper Flo Rida. (iTunes)
  • “Me And Liza”, the latest single from singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright. (iTunes)
  • “Walking On Air”, from former *NSYNC member Lance Bass along with Anise K and featuring Bella Blue and Snoop Dogg. (iTunes)
  • “Who We Are (Remixes)”, a three-song EP featuring the Alternative hit by Switchfoot. (iTunes)

Next week, we’ll see those classic post-GRAMMY sales swings, plus new albums from Casting Crowns, David Crosby and more. See you in seven!
