RECORD REWIND 2019: PGTC Picks, Week Six

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
BLAKE ROSE – “Lost” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Second appearance

Australian performer Rose appears to be blooming like a rose with his second single to date, which received notable support at both Apple Music and Spotify on Friday and ranked among the top 60 pop titles on iTunes. His awesome song is poised to do even more.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
KIM PETRAS – “If U Think About Me…” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fourth appearance

Three is better than one, and Petras knows it well, having just released another three songs on Thursday of last week. While the two others are collaborations, this solo cut ranks as my favorite of the tracks by far. No need to think about it: this pop bop is a nice one.

PICK OF THE WEEK: THREE
R3HAB x ICONA POP – “This Is How We Party” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Third appearance (Icona Pop records for Big Beat Records, distributed by Atlantic Records)

Here’s a great dance release with a nostalgic twist: the song interpolates another track of the same name by S.O.A.P., a Danish duo whose European hit peaked at #21 on the CHR/Pop chart in May 1998. This update keeps it fresh and should be a solid club record.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (October 7, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Q4 in the music industry is getting crazy, so prepare yourself for a massive shift after this week’s more quiet results. That being said, here’s what’s popping this Sunday:

SECONDS FOR SECONDS: No surprises at the top this week, as “Youngblood” by 5 Seconds Of Summer holds steady at #1 in the Top 40 world. As mentioned last week, it’s the first chart-topper at the format for the Australian band, who also rise to #6 on the latest Hot AC list. Surprisingly enough, “Youngblood” reaches the top 40 on a third chart this week: the AC survey, where the tune is up roughly 60 spins from last Sunday. With the global hit still in positive territory on the Top 40 airwaves, it could land a third week at the summit, but there are several competitors in the mix that, if not next week, will definitely be at the top later this month.

DO RE “ME”: Only one new title makes the top 40 this week at the format, with Kim Petras climbing from 42-40 with “Heart To Break”. It’s her first song to enter the region, making Petras one of the first transgender performers to pull off the feat. Several spots lower, we find three singles entering the top 50 this week. The highest, checking in at #47, is “Without Me” by Halsey, a singer who also appears at #14 as a vocalist on the Benny Blanco hit “Eastside”. Her newest single reached #2 on iTunes earlier this week. On a hot streak with her second chart entry here, another collaboration, Elley Duhé links with Gryffin for this week’s #48 single, “Tie Me Down”. It’s the first time in the top 50 for the New York-based musician and producer, born Dan Griffith, though he’s previously received some minor airplay at the fomat before. Lastly, at #49, Why Don’t We jumps aboard with their third chart entry, which is also the title cut from their recent album 8 Letters. Will all three songs reach the top 40 in the coming weeks? Stay tuned, folks.

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of October 5, 2018

Star is bright.

Go Gaga over this week’s top new releases, including a buzzing soundtrack, the latest set for a country hitmaker and duos galore! These are the notable digital and physical releases hitting the market today:

LADY GAGA & BRADLEY COOPER – A Star Is Born (Soundtrack) (iTunes)
Debuting the same weekend that its parent film opens at the box office, both the soundtrack and movie will attract a lot of people in the next few days. On the music side, “Shallow”, which was released last week, remains strong at #1 on iTunes. Also, the ballad “I’ll Never Love Again”, a radio single from the album, is expected to have one of the larger spikes following the film’s debut. Will it be enough to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200? We’ll see how well or not the movie does.

ERIC CHURCH – Desperate Man (iTunes)
Country star Church is well on his way to another high-charting entry, given his four top ten releases since the start of the decade on the Billboard 200 list. Led by the title track, a top 20 hit on the country radio survey, a combination of his passionate fan base and a lot of critical love should make the performer’s latest era a long and lasting one.

TWENTY ONE PILOTS – Trench (iTunes)
The duo’s new album is led by the radio singles “Jumpsuit”, which spent a week at #1 on the Alternative chart, and “My Blood”, a top ten song at the same format and now crossing to the Hot AC and Top 40 airwaves. Will it do as well as Blurryface, which had a string of huge crossover hits like “Stressed Out” and “Ride”? Stay tuned.

FOR KING & COUNTRY – Burn The Ships (iTunes)
Brother, can you spare a hit? The Australian siblings had a joyful time atop the Christian AC chart with “joy.”, which is also rising in the lower rungs of the Hot AC survey. The duo’s last studio album in 2014 just missed the top ten on the Billboard 200, but it’s likely that this one will enter the region.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (July 29, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Gather ’round, “Girls” and boys, because it’s full of top bops and outstanding performers fighting for their shot in the pop arena. Who packs the poppiest punch this week? We’re about to find out together:

“GIRLS” JUST WANT TO HAVE ONE: After one week at #1, Taylor Swift‘s “Delicate” slips to #3, switching places with “Girls Like You” by Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B, which climbs from 3-1. It’s the group’s tenth chart-topper at the format, while frontman Adam Levine has another two solo #1 songs outside of the band, putting him at a even dozen. Meanwhile, Cardi B scores her second, which comes just over four months after her first as a collaborator on Bruno Mars‘s remix of “Finesse”. Holding in the #2 spot, the collaboration “Friends” continues to gain nicely for Marshmello and Anne-Marie, though the latter soloist heads for adds a week from now with her current hit in Europe titled “2002”. Will “Friends” reach #1 before it charts, or will Post Malone‘s “Better Now” (up 9-7 this week) beat them to the top? We’ll find out in the coming weeks.

HITS ON THE “RISE”: As mentioned last week, the bottom half of the chart is extremely active once again, thanks to a handful of titles being purged from the chart. This means that there are five new songs racing into the top 40, led by Ariana Grande‘s “God Is A Woman” (up 41-26) and Charlie Puth‘s “The Way I Am” (up 43-35). It’s the 17th top 40 release at the format for Grande, as Puth collects his ninth. Multi-artist collaborations assembled by producer DJ Khaled (“No Brainer”, new at #37) and songwriter Benny Blanco (“Eastside”, up 49-38) are next in line, followed by the first top 40 hit by the duo Loote, “Your Side Of The Bed”, up 42-40.

Elsewhere, look for potent new entries from rockers Imagine Dragons, who enter at #45 with “Natural”, and the first top 40 entry together for producer Jonas Blue and pop duo Jack & Jack, “Rise”, which rises from outside the top 50 to #47. The former title is building nicely at the Alternative and Hot AC formats, while the latter one is now in the top five in England, Ireland and Scotland. In the #50 spot is this week’s third and final top 50 debut, though its loss in spins may hinder it from going much further at the format. “Heart To Break” is the first entry for German transgender singer Kim Petras.
