RECORD REWIND 2020: PGTC Picks, Week Nineteen

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
ALY & AJ – “Joan Of Arc On The Dance Floor” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Seventh appearance

She was the heroine of the Hundred Years’ War and she’s saving the day again nearly 600 years later in the war of the pop bops. Of course, there won’t be any battlefields or blood, but it’s a big battle on my weekly playlist! Aly & AJ’s new cut is absolutely fantastic.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
KIM PETRAS – “Malibu” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: 14th appearance

After what seems like years (more like a couple months) of staying indoors and away from the ongoing spread of the Coronavirus, a destination song is what we need to virtually travel to somewhere sunny and warm. The bright 80’s-influenced song is an earworm.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
CAPPA – “There With You Baby”
CARO – “When All My Friends Move Away”
JOHNNY STIMSON – “Smile”
LO LIND – “Fake Friends”

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
KIM PETRAS – “Shinin'” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: 13th appearance

With the release of her newest album Clarity on Friday, this is probably the last appearance from Petras you’ll be seeing here on the Rewind for some time. That being said, this is really good album closer to what’s been an amazing (and sometimes unexpected) era.

ADAM LAMBERT – “Comin In Hot”
DELACEY – “The Subway Song”
PARSON JAMES, WRABEL & VINCINT – “Oh Love”

RECORD REWIND 2019: PGTC Picks, Week Twenty Three

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…
_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
LO LO – “Dancing In The Dark” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fourth appearance

Covering a Bruce Springsteen song successfully is a really tough job, especially one as big as this tune became in 1984. However, the Canadian performer Lo Lo is up for the challenge and passes the test with flying colors. It’s a solid pop reimagining of a rock classic.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
SHY MARTIN – “Same Old” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Second appearance

Singer and songwriter Martin has written with top pop talents and sung quite a few great tracks herself, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that her brand new release is here on the Rewind. Following another good single in “Out Of My Hands”, her sound isn’t “Old” at all.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
CHLOE HOWL – “In The Middle (Sad Banger)”
CHRIS AYER – “Dinosaurs”
EIGHTY NINETY – “10K Summer Nights”

RECORD REWIND 2019: PGTC Picks, Week Twenty Two

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…
_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
BENEDICT CORK – “Breaking Hearts” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Third appearance

One of the sweetest voices in soft pop as of recent returns to the Rewind for his third time with another gorgeous tune. Cork, who is currently based in London, hits all the right notes with an emotional vocal and tender sound. It continues to be a good year for him.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
KIM PETRAS – “Do Me” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Tenth appearance

Yes, you’ve been seeing a lot of Kim Petras tunes on here lately, so why not add one more to the mix? (Hey, I can’t help it if she’s out with some great music.) No need to worry, R&B fans, Petras isn’t remaking a certain Bell Biv DeVoe song: this is a pure pop winner.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
KYAN PALMER & NICOPOP. featuring JOHNNY MAC – “What U Like”
MOLLY KATE KESTNER – “My Way Up”
RYAN PULFORD – “Hurts To Fall”

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
PRETTY SISTER – “Kingdom In The Valley” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Sixth appearance

It’s been a minute since Zak Waters’s project last appeared on the Rewind, though he managed to put three singles in the recap last year, including “New Fire” and “Tension”. This bouncy funk release has a fun early 80’s synth-pop influence that’s pretty awesome.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
XYLØ – “Ride Or Die” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fourth appearance

Meanwhile, Paige Duddy’s solo records as XYLØ have been included here a handful of times since going independent, much of that material coming from her EP called Pretty Sad from March. This ride might be a mellower one, but we’re up for the passenger seat.

(Due to Mother’s Day, full commentary will return next week. Enjoy this week’s selections!)

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
BAHARI – “:( (Sad Face)” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fourth appearance

The former trio, now duo, certainly isn’t sad to see their latest release in our weekly recap. The darker electro-pop cut is a good one.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
CXLOE – “Low Blow” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Third appearance

This Australian performer continues to prove herself as a cool emerging name in pop music. “Low” is certainly a high point for her.

BAUM – “Fuckboy”
ISAAC DUNBAR – “Cologne”

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
FINNEAS – “I Lost A Friend” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: 11th appearance

He’s one of the most consistent performers on the weekly recap post, so it’s no surprise that the newest track by Finneas is included in this weekend’s review. The tender pop ballad turned powerful rock stomper is another emotional one, but a really excellent song.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
LO LO – “Stay Up” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Third appearance

It’s been a couple of months since the Canadian performer appeared on the Rewind with the title cut from Sweater Collection, a set that came out last Friday. Combining playful pop production and great lyrics, it’s easy to hear why this nine-track album is so great.

PICK OF THE WEEK: THREE
WRABEL – “The Real Thing” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fourth appearance

Since going independent, singer and songwriter Stephen Wrabel has enjoyed a number of songs making the Rewind post, including this track that was released on Friday. The soulful pop/rock ballad includes some interesting production and a really relatable lyric.

RECORD REWIND 2019: PGTC Picks, Week Seventeen

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
EMILY VAUGHN – “Jealous” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Sixth appearance

Following the release of her EP Bitch Bops, perhaps one of the best EP titles of the year so far, Vaughn’s new collection of songs is a great listen for any pop fan. Two cuts from the set have been noted here in the last few months and this new cut is another fun jam.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
KIM PETRAS – “Broken” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fifth appearance

Petras continues her streak of top pop releases with another appearance on the Rewind, which also seems to be reacting well at the major digital platforms. With her usual writing and production team in the mix, she serves an edgy ballad that should endure here.

PICK OF THE WEEK: THREE
LAUV – “Drugs & The Internet” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: 15th appearance

This guy is also no stranger to the Rewind: he’s climbing up my personal chart with a tune from earlier this year, the Troye Sivan-assisted “I’m So Tired…”, which ranks at #11 this week. Co-written and produced by Jon Bellion, it’s a cool song and music video.
