RECORD REWIND 2019: PGTC Picks, Week Fifteen

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
FLY BY MIDNIGHT – “Waiting Tables” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Eighth appearance

There’s definitely two seats at the table for these guys; I’ve been feasting on their releases for some time now, so the waiting period wasn’t long for this winner to arrive. The mellow retro-tinged pop single combines enough modern elements for a successful result.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
HANNAH JANE LEWIS – “Not Yours Never Was” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fifth appearance

Following the release of the Rewind-approved cuts “Do It Without You” and “Last Night Every Night”, Lewis’s latest song is an easy add to the list, which is featured on her new self-titled EP. With so many great pop records in her catalog, she’ll continue to do well.

PICK OF THE WEEK: THREE
OVERSTREET – “All Nighter” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: First appearance

During the summer of 2017, Overstreet climbed as high as #14 on my personal chart with “Hold On”, though I enjoyed the majority of his songs during a stint with Island Records. Leaning towards a darker rock feel, this one could find support at Alternative radio.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
ALEC BAILEY – “Roseanne”
EBEN – “You The One”
HARRISON WHEELER featuring MARSHALL MAGIC – “Up All Night”
HUX – “Wreck”
JOHAN – “Fifteen”
MISS BENNY – “Every Boy”
MYZICA – “Can’t Come Back”
VIOLET DAYS – “Afterparty”

RECORD REWIND 2019: PGTC Picks, Week Seven

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
BETTY WHO – “The One” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Seventh appearance

One of the album highlights from this past Friday’s pack of releases is the latest set from this pop performer, a dazzling project with so many catchy tunes. Several of them, including “I Remember” from a few weeks ago, are on here. This retro track is also fantastic.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
CXLOE – “I Can’t Have Nice Things” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Second appearance

Australian-based pop is having a great 2019 so far and it’s so good have CXLOE in the mix to continue that trend. Of course, her cut titled “Show You”, which was included on the Rewind last August, got a lot of love from Spotify. Her newest release is pretty catchy.

PICK OF THE WEEK: THREE
FELIX CARTAL & LIGHTS – “Love Me” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: First appearance (Lights records for Warner Bros. Records)

For the CanCon lover in all of us, check out this super collaboration that’s sure to do well up north and in the EDM chart world. Out just in time for Valentine’s Day on the 14th, it’s another great addition to the catalogs of both soloists. Get ready to move it all night.

PICK OF THE WEEK: FOUR
XYLØ – “Nothing Left To Say” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: First appearance

After a run of quality bops on the Disruptor label, a part of the Sony family, Paige Duddy’s solo project (formerly a duo with brother Chase) continues on with a new independent song and a forthcoming EP in just under two weeks. It’s a good preview of the project.

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, November 11-17, 2018

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

BETTY WHO – “Between You And Me” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fifth appearance
Notes: Always great to have the latest track from Who in the mix! The acoustic-heavy pop sound and subtle arrangement work well.

_____

FRANKIE – “You Decided” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Second appearance
Notes: With the follow-up to “When I’m Ready”, this artist’s second independent release after a period with RCA is a solid pop gem.

_____

HANNAH JANE LEWIS – “Do It Without You” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Third appearance
Notes: First included in 2016, then signed to Polydor and now back in the independent spotlight, Lewis keeps the pop bops coming.

_____

MAGDALENA BAY – “Ghost” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fifth appearance
Notes: Back on the Rewind for the first time since January, the duo’s sweet synth-pop sound and 80’s influence is as strong as ever.

_____

MAX STYLER & THE GRISWOLDS – “Light Me Up” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: First appearance for both acts
Notes: The U.S. meets Australia in this worldly dance collaboration, a nice addition to the latter group’s reinvented sound as of late.

_____

PHIL GOOD – “Put It All On Me” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Second appearance
Notes: Good’s latest tracks are all good with me, as “Be Somebody” and now “Put” showcase an amazing side of the singer’s catalog.

_____

SPAZZ CARDIGAN – “DOIDOIT” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fifth appearance
Notes: Emerging as one of Nashville’s most promising new artists, Cardigan’s current track is quirky, catchy and one of his best yet.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
AARON TAOS – “Control”
FLY BY MIDNIGHT – “Heart”
GIRL WILDE – “Nervous Breakdown”
JOE JANIAK – “Heaven Knows”

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 8/7 – 8/13

Record Rewind - August 14, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

EZA – “Alive” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Following her big tune “Off The Record”, Ellery Bonham is back with a sensual little song from her forthcoming Dead Reckoning EP, due on September 16. (I’ve heard the full set and highly recommend it!) Embracing an urban pop feel, it’s a real slow burner.

_____

JUNIOR EMPIRE – “Decide” (iTunes) (Spotify)
You’ve seen this act on many larger blogs and playlists since the summer began. Both this song and previous single “West Coast” are currently on the overall Hype Machine chart, with the prior release actually outperforming the new one. It’s all quality stuff.

_____

KID RUNNER – “Illuminate” (iTunes) (Spotify)
You know I’m still a firm believer that “Give Me Something To Love” is bound to be a huge Alternative hit, but this Columbus act has plenty of other great cuts on an EP that was released on Friday. This track delivers on the synthpop goodness, but still rocks.

_____

LUKR – “Scarecrow” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Whether you enjoyed the original version on Lightning 100 back in 2014, or you’re digging this new mix now, Luke Foley is quite the talent. Spotify’s New Music Friday lists think so too. I think he’ll continue to follow the yellow brick road to big chart success.

_____

OTIS ENGLISH – “Young Kids, Old Love” (iTunes) (Spotify)
It’s the first time for English on my weekly post, a 21-year-old singer and songwriter from Los Angeles. He has an awesome track on his hands with this energetic indie pop song, featuring solid writing and production. Look out for more music from him soon.

_____

OYSTER KIDS – “Gum (Everybody’s My Friend)” (iTunes) (Spotify)
It’s been five months since these Kids dropped their last release, “Lips”, and now their lips are singing a different tune. It’s a cool one too. Embodying a laid-back West Coast sound, their new song is great for any hot and lazy summer day. Chew on this flavor.

_____

For more new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
DAN OWEN – “Made To Love You” (SoundCloud)
HANNAH JANE LEWIS – “Hide And Go Seek” (SoundCloud)
JAKE DAVIS – “Saying It Right” (SoundCloud)
KINDER – “Light” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 6/5 – 6/11

Record Rewind - June 12, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. We’ll be testing it out this month, so if you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the world of SoundCloud and my Indie Summer Mix on Spotify, these records stuck out as my favorite independent tunes of the week…

_____

CARDBOARD KIDS – “Struggle” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Sometimes, the struggle is real. In fact, this “Struggle” is real… real solid, that is. Nashville’s four Kids are back and going around the pop playground we call the blogosphere, scoring in the top 20 on the Hype Machine Twitter chart. Their Mint EP is out soon.

_____

DENNY WHITE – “Sweetness”
Golden Coast’s golden boy returns with a treat of a track; call it smooth ear candy infused with a dark core. White’s single jumped to #1 on Hype Machine’s Twitter list during the week, the top 30 overall, and remains popular on several sites. Have a cavity yet?

_____

EZA – “Off The Record” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Nashville’s Ellery Bonham is no stranger to hot pop records, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that I’m on the record with my approval for her latest jam. It’s great. “Off” saw a nice boost from a Billboard premiere and an add on Spotify’s U.S. New Music Friday list.

_____

HALFNOISE – “Know The Feeling” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Many people are obsessed with “Can’t Stop The Feeling” at the moment, myself included, but there are a few other “feeling” cuts out there waiting to be heard. This Zac Farro project has one of them, a slice of electro-pop that’ll satisfy the SoundCloud crowd.

_____

HANNAH JANE LEWIS – “Bend Or Break” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Lewis’s potent pop sound delivered her great results with her previous single, “Why Start A War”, and thus, the war for blog love continues with a likable follow-up single. If you haven’t heard much about the London newcomer so far, you definitely will soon.

_____

JAKIL – “Tongue Tied” (iTunes) (Spotify)
This five-man band is a new one on my radar, but we’ll be keeping an eye on them. They’re based in London and Edinburgh. They seem to be wrapping their tongues around the popular and slick 80’s sound that’s made a comeback in the past few years. I like it.

_____

JUNIOR EMPIRE – “West Coast” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Currently in the top ten on Hype Machine is this cool track, a new single from the group that went through a recent name change. They were previously known as The Mispers. Now, the act delivers a nice summery song, a mixture of pop and electric goodness.

_____

LAUV featuring TRAVIS MILLS – “Question” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Lauv was featured on our 16 For ’16 list late last year, when he gained massive support for his Lost In The Light EP and songs like “Reforget” and “The Other”. He’s a lion by name, and his production certainly roars. Oh, and the answer is to keep listening to it.

_____

PRETTY SISTER – “West Coast” (iTunes) (Spotify)
We have dueling “West Coast” records in the lineup this week, and I had to feature them both. I may as well take a vacation to the western part of the country soon. This Zak Waters project has impressed with several viral hits, and this soulful song is excellent.

_____

ZAYDE WØLF – “Will I Fall” (iTunes) (Spotify)
How will this Wolf survive? A steady diet of syncs and reactive songs, of course. The Rare Breed EP is a good listen, featuring the anthemic track “Built For This Time”, but “Will I Fall” is another solid single from the Nashville musician. Get onto the dark side.
