RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 21, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. For all the songs that continue to drive onto the pop radio highway, here’s a look at what’s hitting the gas at the format this week:

DRIVERS WANTED: Holding steady for a fourth week, Olivia Rodrigo claims the top spot on the pop chart and remains above 19,000 spins with “Driver’s License”. However, the song is in need of some fuel: it’s down more than 500 spins. Additionally, the hit advances from 2-1 on the Hot AC chart, marking her first chart-topper at that format as well.

Justin Bieber has the highest of two new entries in the top 40 with “Hold On”, climbing from 45-34. Accordingly, it’s also his 34th top 40 single to date. Also new to the top 40: “Sacrifice”, the 18th chart entry for Bebe Rexha, which leaps from 44-35.

There’s also some larger debut activity in the top 50 this week: leading things off, “Friday” comes in at #45 for producers Riton and Nightcrawlers. Their song features a sample of a viral video created by internet personalities Mufasa and Hypeman. “Friday” is already a solid hit overseas, reaching the top ten in some parts of Europe. Chart regular Drake starts at #47 with one of three songs he released earlier this month, “What’s Next”. It just debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. Lastly, at #49, is the TikTok-fueled “In The End”, a partial remake of Linkin Park‘s 2002 hit from producer Tommee Profitt and singer Fleurie. Profitt has a small history of top 40 entries as a songwriter and producer for NF, including his chart-topping “Let You Down” from three years ago.
