RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (April 18, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Some golden goods are shining on the survey, so here’s what’s popping at the format this week:

TATE AT THE PLATE: As baseball begins to dominate the TV, Tate McRae hits a home run with “You Broke Me First”, which climbs 4-1. The enduring hit scores the top spot after 28 innings… uh, rather, weeks on the chart, making it the slowest run to the top of the pop chart by a female artist. “You” finished only 92 spins ahead of The Weeknd‘s “Save Your Tears”, which advances from 3-2 and will inevitably park at the summit soon.

Singer GIVĒON, who you can find in a featured spot on Justin Bieber‘s “Peaches”, lifts from 41-38 with “Heartbreak Anniversary”. It’s his second top 40 hit to date, which comes as “Peaches” leaps from 13-11. Meanwhile, Kali Uchis also climbs from 44-39 on this week’s list with “Telepatía”, which is her first top 40 hit. It’s one of the many recent songs on the survey to move from a breakout on TikTok to the pop chart.

Four new releases check into the top 50 this week, led by Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande at #44 with “Met Him Last Night”. Lovato has now landed in the top 50 twice in April, as “Dancing With The Devil” (now replaced with “Met”) entered and peaked at #40 two weeks ago. It also continues Grande’s hot streak at the format, as she looks to hold four simultaneous positions in the top 40 next week. A bit further down the list, Sofia Carson is in at #46 with “Fool’s Gold”, with newcomer Annika Wells gliding in at #49 with “Sucks Being Sober”. The last of the new songs in the top 50 is by a labelmate of Wells: AJ Mitchell, who gets going with “Stop” in the #50 spot.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (April 6, 2021)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Olivia Rodrigo is the lead driver among the records racing for adds. Let’s add ’em up:

ENJOY THE “VU”: With the follow-up to the recent chart-topper “Driver’s License”, which spent five weeks at #1, Olivia Rodrigo scored a very nice 121 adds on impact for “Déjà Vu”. The tune snuck into the top 40 last weekend and should see some good movement in the coming days. It tied for eighth place at the Hot AC format yesterday, which appeared due to a handful of stations that reported early.

Lil Nas X secured 49 adds during the session for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”, good for the runner-up spot. The single and its music video have been the subject of much online conversation recently, which helped propel it to a #1 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Demi Lovato also entered the top five with the Ariana Grande-assisted “Met Him Last Night”, scoring 20 adds and a fifth place finish. A week ago, Lovato’s “Dancing With The Devil” impacted here with a total of 44 stations during its first week. Given the new single swap, we’ll see what occurs on the airplay chart in the coming weeks.

Charting singles from Addison Rae, Justin Bieber and Masked Wolf returned to the top ten on the adds report this week.

We’ll see you next week for another action-packed adds session.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN (ELEVEN)
1. OLIVIA RODRIGO, “Déjà Vu” (Geffen/Interscope)
2. LIL NAS X, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” (Columbia)
3. ARIANA GRANDE, “POV” (Republic)
4. JUSTIN BIEBER featuring DANIEL CAESAR & GIVEON, “Peaches” (Def Jam)
5. DEMI LOVATO featuring ARIANA GRANDE, “Met Him Last Night” (Island/Republic)
6. GIVĒON, “Heartbreak Anniversary” (Not So Fast/Epic)

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 28, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. For all your Passover pop activity, including more than a few songs passing over others on the survey, here’s a look at what’s moving at the format this week:

END OF THE DRIVE: Chart smash “Driver’s License” from Olivia Rodrigo cruises to a fifth week at the top of the pop chart. In the next few days, it will likely relinquish the chart crown to Billie Eilish, whose “Therefore I Am” is still gaining as it holds at #2.

Another week, another Justin Bieber debut. His 35th top 40 hit is “Peaches”, which scores a sweet start at #29. The track features Daniel Caesar and Givēon, who both score their first top 40 single to date at the format. Ariana Grande‘s “POV” is next at #34, which becomes her 25th top 40 hit at the format. Her new single was last Tuesday’s Most Added song at the format, while “Peaches” secured a second place finish. Format newcomers Lil Tjay and 6LACK are dialing up a hit in “Calling My Phone”, soaring from 43-37 this week. The collaboration is still rising quickly through the top 20 on both the Rhythmic and Urban lists, where both acts have charted previously. Up next, “Sunshine (The Light)” shines on the chart, up from 41-39 for Fat Joe, DJ Khaled and Amorphous. This marks the fifth top 40 hit and first in 16 years for Fat Joe, the 11th for DJ Khaled and the first for Amorphous. Finally, Duncan Laurence appears on the Top 40 radio chart with his first entry, “Arcade”, which debuts at #40. In 2019, it took the top prize at the Eurovision Song Contest and is now the first winning title from the competition to hit the this list since 1976’s “Save Your Kisses For Me” by Brotherhood Of Man, which reached #36 on the CHR survey in Radio & Records that June.

In the top 50, the aforementioned Givēon comes in at #45 with his own “Heartbreak Anniversary”. The track is also approaching the top 40 at the Rhythmic and Urban radio formats. At #47, Ashe and Finneas enter with the duet “Till Forever Falls Apart”. Finneas has written and/or produced a number of chart titles, including those for his sister Billie Eilish, but has never ranked in the top 50 as an artist. The viral hit “Telepatía” by newcomer Kali Uchis aparece en la lista de radio en #49 (or appears on the list at #49.) We have one final song in the #50 spot, coming from NF and the title cut from his recent mixtape Clouds. The set is expected to place in the top five on next week’s Billboard 200 update.
