RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (January 24, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. It’s time to get down to business and have a look at what’s popping at the format this week:

GRANDE CENTRAL: Ariana Grande‘s “Positions” holds steady for a sixth week at #1 on the Top 40 radio chart. The track is up in airplay at both the Rhythmic and Hot AC formats, appearing at #9 and #13, respectively. It’s likely to spend a seventh week at the top, unless one of Justin Bieber‘s recent singles receives an extra boost during the new tracking week.

Up from 42-39, LOONA has a starring role in the top 40 this week with “Star”. It’s the first top 40 entry at the format for the K-pop group. Meanwhile, Zara Larsson and Young Thug blast from 48-40 with “Talk About Love”, which becomes their tenth and fifth top 40 hits, respectively.

Further down in the top 50, Ava Max checks in at #41 with “My Head & My Heart”, which follows her recent top five song “Kings & Queens”. DJ/producer Tiësto scores his first top 50 entry since 2018 with “The Business”, which appears at #46. One collaboration is new to the region at #49: Jason Derulo and Adam Levine team up for “Lifestyle”, as the former’s current solo track “Take You Dancing” remains active in the top 15. Finally, we say “Oops!” and “hello” to newcomer Yung Gravy, who starts at #50.

As we march into the first full week of 2021, here’s what’s popping at the format this week:

STATE YOUR POSITIONS: The first #1 song of 2021 belongs to the same one that led the last chart of 2020: Ariana Grande is at #1 on the Top 40 list for the third week with the title track from her album Positions. “34+35” holds at #13 for the second week. It remains to be seen whether or not “POV” will start to rise again, which was added by a few stations during the last session of 2020.

Justin Bieber‘s “Anyone”, his fourth top 40 single since September and 33rd entry overall, enters at #39 this week. It was released this past Friday. Up from 41-40, the Black Eyed Peas and Shakira sneak into the region with “Girl Like Me”. The track marks the 21st top 40 hit for the group and the 12th for Shakira, who appears in the top 40 for the first time since 2014.

This week’s top 50 entries are by K-pop act LOONA and the late rapper Pop Smoke. The former’s “Star” comes in at #47, marking their first charting song at the format. The latter’s “For The Night”, which features Lil Baby and DaBaby, is two spots lower at #49 on the chart.
