RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (September 29, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. PGTC wishes a very sweet new year to all of our readers celebrating Rosh Hashanah, which begins tonight. Let’s see what’s sweet and sticky at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

THIS “HURTS” TOO: Lizzo‘s “Truth Hurts” remains at #1 on the Top 40 chart for the second week, losing about 350 spins from last week’s published update. The song also climbs to #6 and #10 on the Urban and Hot AC lists, respectively. The tune should have enough of a lead to manage a third week at the top, though Lewis Capaldi‘s “Someone You Loved” (up 4-3) will begin to challenge it in the next few weeks.

Three songs find themselves entering the top 40 this week, led by the current Alternative radio single by Twenty One Pilots. “The Hype”, a top five hit at that format, rises from 41-36 here, becoming the duo’s sixth top 40 entry on the Top 40 list. Alessia Cara is also new to the region with “Rooting For You”, her tenth top 40 track, which leaps from 44-38. Also on the move is Saweetie‘s “My Type”, a recent #1 song on the Rhythmic chart, which bounces from 46-39. It’s her first top 40 song on the Top 40 chart.

The week’s top 50 entries are led by a newcomer, Ali Gatie, who checks in at #48 with his viral release “It’s You”. At #49, “Harder” pairs Jax Jones with Bebe Rexha for their first charting collaboration. Finally, at #50, Loud Luxury and Bryce Vine combine for “I’m Not Alright”, which is already receiving solid airplay in the duo’s native Canada.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (August 27, 2019)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: before we take a hit holiday, a number of new titles pounce on the top five slots, as AJ Mitchell and Ava Max quickly lead the way with a slow song for the format. Let’s add ’em up:

FRIENDS IN “SLOW” PLACES: Our weekly dance for Top 40 adds ends with Mitchell and Max’s release “Slow Dance” scoring tens from all the judges for their flawless routine… and 48 stations on impact certainly doesn’t hurt either. Mitchell’s charted twice at the format with two songs that have achieved minor success: 2018’s “Girls” (#38) and “All My Friends” (#21) from a few months back. Look for the collaboration to make the top 50 at the end of the week, marking the third song to enter the region for both acts. Mitchell’s new EP, which bears the same name as its single, was released last Friday.

Though it doesn’t officially impact here until the second week of September, Why Don’t We‘s “What Am I” has a good start at the format with 35 stations this Tuesday. It’s enough to squeeze into a third place finish, though we’ll see if it can reach the top spot on the log in the next couple of weeks. Following behind them, Khalid and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie‘s new version of “Right Back” earns 34 stations and the fourth position on the list, while Alessia Cara‘s “Rooting For You” slides into fifth place with 33 adds. A soundtrack cut from Lauv and Anne-Marie also gets some decent action from the panel: “F*ck I’m Lonely”, which is included on the companion album to the new season of 13 Reasons Why, is in sixth place with 21 new stations.

Charting releases by NF, SHAED and Twenty One Pilots are among those prominent songs making up the rest of the top ten.

Have a relaxing and restful Labor Day weekend!

RADIO REPORT: What’s Popping At Top 40 Radio This Week (August 26-27, 2019)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist this week. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here are four tracks impacting this week at the Top 40 format:

AJ MITCHELL featuring AVA MAX – “Slow Dance” (Epic)
Album: Slow Dance (EP) (2019)
Past T40 History: Mitchell’s made the top 40 twice to minor success; Max’s hit “Sweet But Psycho” spent two weeks at #3 in May.

ALESSIA CARA – “Rooting For You” (Def Jam)
Album: This Summer (EP) (2019)
Past T40 History: Cara’s last three chart releases have missed the top ten at the format. However, she still has four #1 hits to date.

KHALID featuring A BOOGIE WIT DA HOODIE – “Right Back” (Right Hand/RCA)
Album: Free Spirit (original solo version, 2019)
Past T40 History: In the last eleven months, Khalid’s put three titles (two collaborations and one solo hit) at the top of the survey.

SAWEETIE – “My Type” (ICY/Artistry/Warner)
Album: ICY (EP) (2019)
Past T40 History: The rapper hasn’t charted here before. Her track samples 2004’s “Freek-A-Leek” by Petey Pablo, which hit #18.

Next week: due to the Labor Day holiday, no songs are currently listed as impacting at the format for next Tuesday.

Which of these new songs would you like to see top the charts? Let me know!

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (August 25, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. For all of you señores y señoritas wanting to know how your favorite songs are doing, let’s see what’s popping at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

IF I CAN HAVE TWO: It’s a huge week for Shawn Mendes on the Top 40 chart, as the pop star leaps from 3-1 with the Camila Cabello-assisted “Señorita”, while “If I Can’t Have You” reverses direction and leaps from 4-2, thanks in part to a midweek spike in airplay. Though originally released as stand-alone singles, both tracks can be found on a digital reissue of his 2018 self-titled album. Mendes joins Halsey as the only two artists to control the top two slots on the pop chart for a period of time this year.

Charting with her third top 40 solo hit, Normani leaps onto the survey at #34 with “Motivation”, which was last Tuesday’s top title on the weekly adds report. Of course, Normani had an additional nine top 40 songs as a member of Fifth Harmony. The late great Whitney Houston earns her 30th top 40 hit this week thanks to Kygo‘s new version of “Higher Love”, up 41-38. It also makes the top 40 on the Hot AC chart this Sunday. On the pop airwaves, this marks Kygo’s sixth top 40 single to date. The third and final entry in the region is the first for viral star Lil Tecca, who bounces from 43-40 with “Ransom”. The song also makes a significant move at the Rhythmic radio format, where it lifts into the top ten.

“Small Talk” leads off this week’s top 50 entries, as Katy Perry‘s latest release bows at #42. It’s her third single to chart this year. A few spots lower, at #46, Twenty One Pilots return to the pop airspace with “The Hype”. The song is currently approaching the top ten on the Alternative chart and heads for adds at the Hot AC format tomorrow. Finally, at #49, Saweetie makes the Top 40 list for the first time with “My Type”, a recent top ten hit on both the Rhythmic and Urban charts. The tune samples Petey Pablo‘s “Freek-A-Leek”, a 2004 single which spent two weeks at #18 that July.
