ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (August 14, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: chart hits by acts like Ariana Grande, Bazzi and The Chainsmokers, among others, shine on a quiet week, while an Alternative crossover title from Weezer takes us across the globe. Let’s add ’em up:

YES WE CHAN: As iHeartMedia’s annual late summer music summit takes over the Big Apple this week, final results are split at the Top 40 format, with no overwhelmingly dominant tracks in the mix. Leading the way with 22 new stations, “Jackie Chan” from Tiësto and Dzeko featuring Preme and Post Malone ranks as the Most Added single for the first time, while “Side Effects”, the latest collaboration from The Chainsmokers and Emily Warren, fills the runner-up spot with 20 new stations. As you can see, nothing particularly earth-shattering, but that will certainly change next week! (Details to come.)

With that said, though there were fewer new titles reaching the upper regions of the list, some acts took advantage of a soft week to grab a solid week of adds. Weezer‘s smash cover of the Toto hit “Africa”, currently atop the Alternative radio chart, scored 16 this week, tying it with Tyga‘s huge Rhythmic and Urban single “Taste”, featuring Offset, which impacts here for the second time. The former title, which is just below the top 50, should enter the region this weekend, while the latter tune should enter the top 40 very soon.

1. TIESTO & DZEKO featuring PREME and POST MALONE, “Jackie Chan” (Casablanca/Republic)
2. THE CHAINSMOKERS featuring EMILY WARREN, “Side Effects” (Disruptor/Columbia)
3-T. SABRINA CARPENTER, “Almost Love” (Hollywood)
5. BAZZI featuring CAMILA CABELLO, “Beautiful” (APG/Atlantic)
6-T. ANNE-MARIE, “2002” (Warner Bros.)
6-T. ARIANA GRANDE, “God Is A Woman” (Republic)
6-T. TYGA featuring OFFSET, “Taste” (Lost Kings/EMPIRE)
6-T. WEEZER, “Africa” (Crush Music/RRP)
10. CHARLIE PUTH, “The Way I Am” (Artist Partner/Atlantic)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (June 19, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: can you stand the pop pains of a split panel? Alessia Cara‘s “Pains” get a prescription for Top 40 traction, while Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande head to “Bed” for some Z’s and prominent stations. It is time to add ’em up:

GROW WITH THE FLOW: With four #1 songs to date at the format, Alessia Cara is well on her way to securing a fifth. Cara’s new one is “Growing Pains”, which easily secures the Most Added spot on this week’s Top 40 report, putting up 112 stations during its impact date today. Cara’s sophomore album is due sometime later this year.

Making a strong case for second place, labelmates Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande know how to talk the pillow talk with “Bed”, the first pop single from Minaj’s forthcoming album Queen. It blasts off with 46 stations on impact. The collaboration flew to #1 on iTunes upon release last Thursday. The two women are now teaming up on “The Light Is Coming”, a song from Grande’s upcoming album Sweetener. Much like “Bed”, expect that single to easily top the all-genre chart at iTunes tomorrow.

Elsewhere, impacting titles from Sabrina Carpenter and a Tiësto-led collaboration enter the top five and top ten, respectively.

1. ALESSIA CARA, “Growing Pains” (Def Jam)
2. NICKI MINAJ featuring ARIANA GRANDE, “Bed” (YMCMB/Republic)
3. POST MALONE, “Better Now” (Republic)
4. 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER, “Youngblood” (Capitol)
5. SABRINA CARPENTER, “Almost Love” (Hollywood)
6. CARDI B, BAD BUNNY & J BALVIN, “I Like It” (KSR Group/Atlantic)
7-T. KHALID x NORMANI, “Love Lies” (Right Hand/Keep Cool/RCA)
7-T. MAROON 5 featuring CARDI B, “Girls Like You” (222/Interscope)
9-T. MEGHAN TRAINOR, “Let You Be Right” (Epic)
9-T. TIËSTO & DZEKO featuring PREME & POST MALONE, “Jackie Chan” (Casablanca/Republic)

TURN IT UP TUESDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (June 17)

A "Brooklyn Baby" rocks the cradle towards the top.

A “Brooklyn Baby” rocks the cradle towards the top.

They’re calling it a mini-Super Tuesday, although if the results are right, it may be an Ultratuesday once all is said and done. Here’s what albums and singles are in stores for the week of June 17:

  • Lana Del Rey makes her highly anticipated return with Ultraviolence, her first full-length set since 2012. The first single from it, “West Coast”, is enjoying play at both the AAA and Alternative formats. She may be a polarizing figure in the music world, but she’s got a big fan base to lead her to #1. Will it happen for the 27-year-old singer? Industry sources seem to think she’s got it and I believe them. Stay tuned to see! (iTunes)
  • Released several weeks ago in the U.K. to massive success, the debut effort from singer Sam Smith is now out in the States, In The Lonely Hour. The U.S. leadoff “Stay With Me” has become a global smash, and the singer was also featured on top singles from Disclosure and Naughty Boy. It could be the surprise of the week, but it also may have to settle for #2. Still, the GRAMMY buzz is immense already. (iTunes)
  • The once Alternative heavyweights Linkin Park have been limping to some paltry peaks at the format lately, and a harder sound on The Hunting Party may have something to do with it. Both “Guilty All The Same” and “Until It’s Gone” have charted, with the former topping the Active Rock survey. This should hit six figures and be safely in the top 3, but #1 won’t be theirs this time around. (iTunes)
  • Papis around the globe are feeling the luh from Jennifer Lopez and her latest effort, A.K.A., featuring the new CHR radio hit “First Love”. Lopez’s first week sales are still on the decline, but a top ten opening is relatively possible with this album so long as it attracts a crowd. Just don’t expect it to have legs unless something major happens. (iTunes)
  • DJ and producer Joel Zimmerman, who performs under the stage name deadmau5, is out with while(1<2), referring  to a piece of programming code meaning “to loop indefinitely”. In 2012, he cracked the top ten on the Billboard 200 with > album title goes here <. His new set should find a place there as well… though not indefinitely. (iTunes)
  • Other releases out this week include: Clean Bandit‘s New Eyes (iTunes), David Gray‘s Mutineers (iTunes), Mary J. Blige‘s soundtrack to Think Like A Man Too (iTunes), Tiesto‘s A Town Called Paradise (iTunes), Willie Nelson‘s Band Of Brothers (iTunes) and a various artists effort, Playing For Change 3: Songs Around The World (iTunes).

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:

  • “3 Things”, this week’s album cut from Jason Mraz‘s forthcoming Yes! album. (iTunes)
  • “Afire Love”, “Bloodstream”, etc., several digital tracks being released from Ed Sheeran‘s X album. (iTunes)
  • “Maps”, the leadoff single from V for pop/rockers Maroon 5. (iTunes)
  • “My Hurricane”, fresh from former Graffiti6 singer and now soloist Jamie Scott. (iTunes)
  • “No Mediocre”, a collaboration between T.I. and Iggy Azalea. (iTunes)

Next week, it’s all about a potent pop punch from singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran — how will X do against rapper G-Eazy and heavy metal rockers Mastodon? A full preview is coming in seven!
