Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Here come this week’s party Animals:
THE “HEAT” IS ON: In its 29th nonconsecutive week in the top 40, “Heat Waves” rises from 2-1 on the Top 40 survey, as Glass Animals score their first #1 song at the format. Their hit spent three weeks at #1 on the Alternative radio chart in March of last year.
Singer and songwriter Charlie Puth lights up the #30 spot with his new release titled “Light Switch”. The debut marks his 12th top 40 hit to date. The Walters also enter the top 40 this week with “I Love You So”, landing at #39. Originally released back in 2014, the tune went viral on TikTok last fall and continues to grow.
This week’s top new entry in the top 50 is a collaboration that teams Avril Lavigne and Blackbear: “Love It When You Hate Me” has more love than hate from the Top 40 panel, as it starts at #43. The track is also just below the top 40 at the Hot AC format. Newcomers Daisy The Great spin their way into the #46 position with the AJR-assisted “Record Player”, a current top ten hit on the Alternative chart. The original version of the tune (without AJR) had a fairly successful run on TikTok during the fall of 2019. Producers ALTÉGO are also new to the list at #47 with “Toxic Pony”, their mashup of two chart classics: “Toxic” spent four weeks at #1 for Britney Spears during the spring of 2004, but “Pony” only got as high as #32 for Ginuwine in early 1997. (It hit the top five on the Rhythmic and Urban charts in late 1996.) Finally, Sena Kana and Poo Bear sneak in at #49 with “Undisputed”.
