RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (August 19, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. We could never cancel our pop parade of the notable and emerging hits at the Top 40 format, but hey, ours won’t cost you a cent to look at. Here’s what’s popping on the airwaves this week:

ALL FOUR THE “GIRLS”: As “Girls Like You” begins to lose some ground at the format, narrowly missing the weekly spin record by about 200 spins, the giant pop hit from Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B holds at the top spot on the Top 40 chart for a fourth week. It’s also at #1 on the Hot AC chart for its third week and is likely to stay there for some time longer, as there’s a lack of competition in the top five. There’s no word on a next single from the Red Pill Blues album, or if there will be one, as of yet. Checking in at #2 on the Top 40 chart, Post Malone is stuck in the runner-up position for the third consecutive week with “Better Now”, but his song should have a change of scenery next week. “Better” is also approaching the top 30 on the Hot AC chart, making it his highest-charting track at that format.

“RISE” AND SHINE: There are three top 40 entries, including two collaborations, on this week’s chart update, with “Beautiful” by Bazzi featuring Camila Cabello leading the pack, soaring from 47-36. It’s the second top 40 entry for Bazzi, following his #1 single “Mine” from earlier this year, while Cabello checks in with her eighth solo top 40 entry at the format, six of which have been duets or features with other performers. From there, Anne-Marie‘s “2002” makes a jump from 44-38, marking her fourth top 40 song here, while “Rise”, the first collaboration from Jonas Blue and Jack & Jack, takes a couple of steps up from 42-40. Individually, this hit is the third top 40 single for Blue and the second for the duo.

Additional top 50 action is limited this week, though Weezer‘s “Africa”, the current #1 track on the Alternative chart, debuts at #46. It’s the band’s first time in the top 50 at the format since January 2006, when “Perfect Situation” got to #47. Leader Rivers Cuomo also appeared on a B.o.B single called “Magic” in 2010, which spent three weeks at #13 that September. Childish Gambino is also back in the top 50 with his latest, “Summertime Magic”, coming in at #50. The track is already gaining solid airplay on the Rhythmic and Urban radio formats.

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist this week. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here are five singles impacting this week at the Top 40 format:

MAROON 5 featuring CARDI B – “Girls Like You” (222/Interscope)
Album: Red Pill Blues (2017, original version)
Past T40 History: Since 2010, Maroon 5 has charted 14 top ten songs at this format, half reaching the top, totaling 26 weeks at #1.

MEGHAN TRAINOR – “Let You Be Right” (Epic)
Album: TBA (2018)
Past T40 History: Trainor is coming off three top ten misses in a row on the pop chart. Does “Right” get her in the right direction?

PHARRELL WILLIAMS x CAMILA CABELLO – “Sangria Wine” (Columbia)
Album: TBA (2018)
Past T40 History: This is the first time together for Williams and Cabello. It was originally recorded by the latter for her debut set.

POST MALONE – “Better Now” (Republic)
Album: Beerbongs & Bentleys (2018)
Past T40 History: As “Psycho” approaches the top spot, which would be his first #1 at the format, “Better” is already in the top 50.

SOFIA REYES featuring JASON DERULO & DE LA GHETTO – “1, 2, 3” (Warner Bros.)
Album: TBA (2018)
Past T40 History: Reyes and De La Ghetto are newcomers here; Derulo last charted at the format with “Swalla”, which got to #19.

Next week: BTS officially impact here with “Fake Love”, but will the real love go to “Flames” from David Guetta and Sia? We’re in for another good Tuesday in just over a week.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (June 3, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Even as Governors Ball concludes, the CHR airwaves always need a musical mayor to rank at the top. Who will it be this week? Get all the stats you need below:

CAUGHT IN “THE MIDDLE”: After four weeks in the runner-up slot, “The Middle”, by Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey, gets a second run at the top, making this frame its sixth non-consecutive week at #1 on the pop format. This is not the longest wait for a #1 song to return to the summit; 20 years ago, Savage Garden‘s hit “Truly Madly Deeply” sat at #2 for nine weeks between its second and third weeks at the top, the longest stretch in the Radio & Records/Mediabase timeline. The big collaboration was also very close to a fifth non-consecutive week at #1 on the Hot AC chart, but missed returning by about 20 spins. This extra time at the top doesn’t look it’ll last much longer, however, as a certain musical maniac (at least, by song title) looks poised to take over in the coming days. You might almost say it’s a $ign of the times…

A “BETTER” WEEK AHEAD: Though it’s a relatively slow chart week toward the top of the survey, four new tunes come into the top 50 this week. Leading the way, the Australian act 5 Seconds Of Summer hops aboard at #44 with the song that remains at #1 down under, “Youngblood”. This is the title track from their upcoming studio album, which is now out on June 15. Israeli newcomer Dennis Lloyd settles at #46 with “Nevermind”. Lloyd’s first U.S. chart entry has been performing extremely well on Spotify, where it surged as a result of notable pop and dance playlisting globally. The single is charting or has charted in much of Europe, achieving top ten peaks in countries like Germany, Norway and Sweden. From there, bouncing in at #49, is a single that remains the top seller on iTunes here in the U.S.: Maroon 5‘s “Girls Like You” and its updated version featuring Cardi B. Next Sunday, “Girls” will likely become the group’s 26th top 40 entry on the pop list, which comes just short of the 15th anniversary of “Harder To Breathe” making the top 40 at the format. Lastly, at #50, Post Malone‘s “Better Now” debuts prior to its impact date on Tuesday. If you didn’t catch the hint before, Malone’s “Psycho”, featuring Ty Dolla $ign, should climb to #1 (currently at #3) on next week’s update.
