Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. We could never cancel our pop parade of the notable and emerging hits at the Top 40 format, but hey, ours won’t cost you a cent to look at. Here’s what’s popping on the airwaves this week:
ALL FOUR THE “GIRLS”: As “Girls Like You” begins to lose some ground at the format, narrowly missing the weekly spin record by about 200 spins, the giant pop hit from Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B holds at the top spot on the Top 40 chart for a fourth week. It’s also at #1 on the Hot AC chart for its third week and is likely to stay there for some time longer, as there’s a lack of competition in the top five. There’s no word on a next single from the Red Pill Blues album, or if there will be one, as of yet. Checking in at #2 on the Top 40 chart, Post Malone is stuck in the runner-up position for the third consecutive week with “Better Now”, but his song should have a change of scenery next week. “Better” is also approaching the top 30 on the Hot AC chart, making it his highest-charting track at that format.
“RISE” AND SHINE: There are three top 40 entries, including two collaborations, on this week’s chart update, with “Beautiful” by Bazzi featuring Camila Cabello leading the pack, soaring from 47-36. It’s the second top 40 entry for Bazzi, following his #1 single “Mine” from earlier this year, while Cabello checks in with her eighth solo top 40 entry at the format, six of which have been duets or features with other performers. From there, Anne-Marie‘s “2002” makes a jump from 44-38, marking her fourth top 40 song here, while “Rise”, the first collaboration from Jonas Blue and Jack & Jack, takes a couple of steps up from 42-40. Individually, this hit is the third top 40 single for Blue and the second for the duo.
Additional top 50 action is limited this week, though Weezer‘s “Africa”, the current #1 track on the Alternative chart, debuts at #46. It’s the band’s first time in the top 50 at the format since January 2006, when “Perfect Situation” got to #47. Leader Rivers Cuomo also appeared on a B.o.B single called “Magic” in 2010, which spent three weeks at #13 that September. Childish Gambino is also back in the top 50 with his latest, “Summertime Magic”, coming in at #50. The track is already gaining solid airplay on the Rhythmic and Urban radio formats.
