RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 12/4 – 12/10

Record Rewind - December 11, 2016

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

GOLDEN COAST – “Make Ya Move” (iTunes) (Spotify)
It was hard selecting just one spotlight track from this duo’s self-titled EP, which was released a few days ago. Both “Comeback Kid” and “Recess” are former Rewind picks, and “Move” is bound to move up in streams and blog entries. You’ll bounce to this pop bop.

_____

PATTERNIST – “When The Lights Turn Low” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Gabe Mouer, a musician based in Portland, OR, was featured on the Rewind three weeks ago with the title track from Give It Up, an EP he released on Friday. Shades of dance-pop and indie rock color this fun cut, making it (and the other songs) an enjoyable listen.

_____

TYLER HILTON – “Next To You” (iTunes) (Spotify)
High school flashback! Signed to Maverick Records, this singer’s “When It Comes” and “How Love Should Be” were both hits on my chart, with “When” going to #5 just after Christmas in 2004. Hilton self-releases his music now, and the results are pretty fantastic.

_____

YOUNG SUMMER – “Old Chunk Of Coal” (iTunes – n/a) (Spotify – n/a)
I said to myself one day recently, “Self, how have you survived without noting Young Summer on the Rewind in over a month?” As I struggled to find an answer, lo and behold, this John Anderson cover appeared. It’s a beautiful reinterpretation of a country classic.

_____

For more great new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
BEST NIGHT EVER – “Caught Up” (SoundCloud)
JUNIOR PROM – “Contenders” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 10/23 – 10/29

Record Rewind - October 30, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

DAN OWEN – “Moonlight” (iTunes) (Spotify)
A few months ago, Owen did some damage on a number of Viral charts with a lovely ballad called “Made To Love You”. It stands at over 1.7 million plays to date on Spotify. His Open Hands And Enemies EP reveals more to the artist, including this standout song.

_____

GREAT GOOD FINE OK – “Get Away” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Jon Sandler and Luke Moellman have been doing their thing for some time now, and with a new EP due at the top of the year, it’s a release to look forward to, especially with the consistency of their previous two EPs. This single is another catchy electropop tune.

_____

JESSE RUBEN – “Scared Of America” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Ruben provided some sunny pop rays with his delightful “First Day Of Summer” in mid-July, but this release is much more serious in tone. It’s real life, and it’s raw. Released in acoustic form, rather than a studio cut, it underscores the solemn nature of the tales.

_____

SLOW SUGAR – “Shotgun” (iTunes) (Spotify)
They might have slow in their act name, but this New York City duo is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. This is their third track to appear on the Rewind since August, and it’s a wicked musical weapon that pierces the pop world in all its edgy glory. Great song.

_____

YOUNG SUMMER – “Heart In Slo Mo” (iTunes) (Spotify)
After a solid run of four EP cuts to be included in the Rewind, let’s extend that total to five. Featured on You Would Have Loved It Here, which came out two days ago, “Heart” is Bobbie Allen in her element, gliding over the beat of a new wave-influenced winner.

_____

For more great new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
ANDREW BELLE – “You” (SoundCloud)
JAKIL – “Unforgivable” (SoundCloud)
SCOTT QUINN – “Delicate” (SoundCloud)
YOUNG TIDES – “Easy Love” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 10/9 – 10/15

Record Rewind - October 16, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

BEACH WEATHER – “Chit Chat” (iTunes) (Spotify)
We could really use some beach weather with the recent fall chill starting up again, but I think this is about as close as we’re going to get. This trio had a song called “Wolf” that I enjoyed in 2015, and their latest song is another rockin’ release from the LAB crew.

_____

DECO – “I T I W Y” (iTunes) (Spotify)
This English group was last on the Rewind in June, when their single “Apollo” was released. Now, “I T I W Y”, or “I Thought I Was Yours” to those of you who’d like to spell it all out, is making its debut and soaking up all that lovely mid-80’s new wave goodness.

_____

GOLDEN COAST – “Comeback Kid” (iTunes) (Spotify)
If you’re a Country music fan, you’re probably familiar with a current radio song with the same title from a certain sibling trio. It’s definitely not this one, a pretty catchy track from Denny White and Steven Mudd that’s been knocking out the competition online.

_____

YOUNG SUMMER – “Echo” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Yes, after months of waiting, it’s finally coming. Get ready for her new EP You Would Have Loved It Here, due on October 28. On the Rewind, I’ve featured the three previous singles from the EP: “Alright”, “Fallout” and “Paused Parade”. This tune is also good.

_____

For more great new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
HUDSON SCOTT – “Panning For Gold” (SoundCloud)
SAM TINNESZ – “Dangerous Game” (SoundCloud)
TAY SALEM – “Recreate” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 8/21 – 8/27

Record Rewind - August 28, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

CAPE CUB – “All I Need” (iTunes) (Spotify)
It’s amazing to have a new song from Chad Male, who released his Closer EP back in the spring. That set yielded great singles like “Keep Me In Mind” and “Swim”. His return marks a fuller sound and more of a new wave sensibility, one that fits with the singer.

_____

FLETCHER – “Wasted Youth” (iTunes) (Spotify)
She’s a queen of streams, and she’s back where she belongs: on your favorite Spotify New Music Friday playlist. Leaping towards a total of 42 million plays at the service, her latest single is perhaps her best since “War Paint”. It’s certainly not a wasted release.

_____

GOLDEN COAST – “Recess” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Do you ever wish you were back on the swings or the monkey bars, reliving the joy of being young again? The Los Angeles duo of Denny White and Steven Mudd want to take you out of the darkness and onto this pop playground. I hope this slides onto radio.

_____

PHANGS – “Cul De Sac” (iTunes) (Spotify)
From leading the Cardboard Kids to debuting his new solo project, Jake Germany has plenty of sounds to make the rounds. That consistent output provides us with another cool single. His song title might be a dead-end street, but his career is one open road.

_____

ROYAL TONGUES – “Overdose” (iTunes) (Spotify)
The boys from Buffalo, Aaron Bonus and Justin Gammella, are back with their first new release in nearly four months. In May, it was “Oblivion”. Now, sticking with the “O” titles, their prescription for energetic production and indie pop goodness will heal all.

_____

THE NEW COAST – “Slow Down” (iTunes)
We last heard from Nick Blyth and Chris Cheater earlier this year, when “Lost In Your Love” had its debut on blogs and playlists. Their Paraga Beach EP comes out November 4, but given these two great tracks, the other half of the EP should be just as solid.

_____

YOUNG SUMMER – “Fallout” (iTunes) (Spotify)
At this point, you know I’m excited about the upcoming EP from Bobbie Allen. Each cut released so far is different musically, and I can’t wait to hear the full thing. She released this lush ballad earlier this week, soothing with its dulcet tones and pretty melody.

_____

For more new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
KIAH VICTORIA – “Hollow” (SoundCloud)
MYZICA featuring EZRA CAREY – “Drive” (SoundCloud)
TRUITT – “Fallback” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 7/17 – 7/23

Record Rewind - July 24, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

BEST NIGHT EVER – “Fire Me Up” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Tropical vibes for a cause? Yes, it’s true. The Trevor Project (U.S.) and Kids Help Phone (Canada) are earning the proceeds from sales and streams of this song. So, feel good about digging that summery sound, and feel better knowing that kids are aided by it.

_____

KNGDAVD – “Say My Name” (iTunes) (Spotify)
They may be lacking a few vowels in their name, but this New York City duo makes up for it with some punchy pop songs that will get you energized. Their latest tune sounds like a sync waiting to happen; don’t be surprised if you hear it on TV soon. Get into it!

_____

LAVOY – “Smile” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Though they released their first EP two years ago, it wasn’t until earlier this week that I discovered this Spokane quintet and that nostalgic 80’s pop influence shining like a sunny afternoon. If you’re looking for a song that will perk you up, this is a great listen.

_____

PIERRE STEMMETT – “No Sweat”
Stemmett’s been on my radar since last year, when he uploaded a single called “Sleep Anthem”. So, if you’ve been sleeping on the South African singer up until now, you should probably take a listen to his tropical pop jam. “No” leads his upcoming EP, Outset.

_____

STEFAN ALEXANDER – “Skeleton” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Making a good first impression with his debut single, Alexander searches through the shadows of a love gone wrong to find a way to begin anew in this dark cut. Early contender for a new Halloween playlist? I think so. I’m looking forward to more of his songs.

_____

THE ELECTRIC SONS – “Cool”
Last year, I discovered a handful of great tracks from this Atlanta band, including “Into The Night” and “Tell Me What To Say”. It takes good timing to release a single called “Cool” during a major heat wave, and that electropop goodness is some needed relief.

_____

YOUNG SUMMER – “Paused Parade” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Earlier this month, I featured “Alright” from this D.C. singer in the Rewind. Now, musical chameleon Bobbie Allen returns with a light piece of pleasurable pop, influenced by jazz elements. If a picture of a summer day came alive, it would sound like this track.

_____

For more new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
ANNA MAE – “Just Watch” (SoundCloud)
JAMES DELANEY – “Please Don’t Go” (SoundCloud)
STALGIA – “In The Trees” (SoundCloud)
SVRCINA – “Island” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 6/26 – 7/2

Record Rewind - July 3, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. We’ll be testing it out this month, so if you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the world of SoundCloud and my Indie Summer Mix on Spotify, these records stuck out as my favorite independent tunes of the week…

_____

BEACH TIGER – “Companion” (iTunes) (Spotify)
You may have heard this song in the mix of your favorite New Music Friday playlist. I’ve enjoyed their two prior singles, and it’s a good thing to say that they’re 3-for-3 for me now. The South Carolina band has mastered a great indie rock mentality that works.

_____

CAPPA – “Mad About U” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Attention pop girls: please clear the way for Carla Cappa. The Nashville performer delivers again with her new song, a saucy R&B flavored track with nice production. Her hot jam is a winner for the summer; call it another feather in her cap-pa. (I tried, really.)

_____

HANNAH GRACE – “Mustang” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Grace has been on my radar for a number of years now, and I’ve enjoyed songs like “Keep Your Love” and “Meant To Be Kind”. It looks like she’s about to add to my favorites, with a new EP due on July 15. Fusing 70’s rock with current pop, Grace shines again.

_____

KID RUNNER – “Give Me Something To Love” (iTunes) (Spotify)
If there’s one song this week that could be a big record at Alternative radio several months from now, it’s this excellent tune from the upcoming EP Body Language, due August 12. The Ohio band continues to get streaming love, and is poised for more success.

_____

RAINSFORD – “S.I.D. (Sunshine In December)”
Last year, Rainey Qualley had a pair of tracks issued to Country stations on a small label, including “Me And Johnny Cash”, which was spun on a number of outlets. Returning with a project under this new name, she flourishes with an edgy pop sound and lyric.

_____

VOKES featuring NEVVE – “Backroad” (iTunes) (Spotify)
He’s four singles into his new project, and it’s pretty clear that Los Angeles musician Mike Harris has a strong electronic soul vibe that’s hitting thousands of ears around the world. His latest track should continue to, ahem, drive up support in the coming days.

_____

WILD – “Silver & Gold” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Christmas in July? Not quite. Save the snow and tinsel for a later date, but do unwrap this gift from the Los Angeles trio. The last year has given the band a blog and streaming breakout, with “Back To You” and “Vagabond” leading the pack. Look out for more.

_____

YOUNG SUMMER – “Alright” (iTunes) (Spotify)
The summer is very young indeed, but this summery sound will get you feeling young again. D.C.-based singer Bobbie Allen has a great return single that dives into the pop pool of 80’s goodness. Don’t towel off just yet; you’ll want to ride this wave for a while.

_____

For more new music, we suggest…
GYPSY & THE CAT – “Life” (iTunes) (Spotify)
NATIVE PEOPLE – “Call Me” (iTunes) (Spotify)
