RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 31, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Can you believe tomorrow is the first day of April? Crazy! As we head further into the spring, here’s what’s blooming and popping at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

ALL FOUR “7”: Down roughly 100 spins or so from last week, Ariana Grande‘s single “7 Rings” lands a fourth week at #1 on the Top 40 chart. It should easily score a fifth week. Her follow-up hit “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” holds outside the top ten once again, though it’s up a spot to #11 and can enter the region by next week’s update.

AJ Mitchell‘s “All My Friends” leaps from 41-34 this week, earning him his second top 40 entry, as he leads a pack of four new hits in that section of the chart. Next up, “Hard Place” by format newcomer H.E.R. moves from 42-38, while “La La Land” lands at #39, giving Bryce Vine and YG their second top 40 entries. That track rises from #48 last week, where it debuted. However, there’s one artist in the mix that’s not scoring her first or second, but rather, her 29th top 40 song on the current chart. P!nk jumps from 43-40 with “Walk Me Home”, the lead single from her forthcoming release Hurts 2B Human. The tune is already climbing through the top ten at the Hot AC format.

Another three tracks reach the top 50 this week at the format, led by the viral hit “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X at #41. It also bolts into the top 40 on the Rhythmic chart. A few notches lower, “Chlorine” seeps into the pool of pop at #48 for Twenty One Pilots. It marks the second crossover song from the act’s most recent album Trench. Finally, a current top ten tune on both the Rhythmic and Urban lists also busts down into the top 50 this week: that title is “Thotiana”, the first chart entry for Blueface, which lands at #50. A remix of the single features Cardi B and the aforementioned YG, though neither performer is credited on Mediabase.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 24, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Time to ring in the new survey, so let’s head up the list and check out what’s popping at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

THE SHAPE OF “RINGS”: Ariana Grande‘s international hit “7 Rings” is safely #1 again at the Top 40 format for a third week, with the nearest competitor still about 3,900 spins away. It remains at #6 on the Rhythmic chart and rises to #15 at Hot AC radio. It should remain at the summit for a fourth week, given its sizable boost of just over 500 spins, as her follow-up single “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” holds outside the top ten at #12. It’s up nearly 1,100 spins versus last week.

After debuting at #45 on last week’s list, Lauv and Troye Sivan‘s “I’m So Tired…” climbs to #37 on this week’s survey, which gives the former his third top 40 single at the format and the latter his fifth. The tune is the highest of three debuts in the top 40, followed by Jeremy Zucker‘s “comethru” (up 42-39) and Jake Miller‘s “Wait For You” (41-40). Zucker’s hit is his first to reach the region, though Miller’s entry is his second and first in 4-1/2 years. That song, “First Flight Home”, got as high as #29 in October 2014.

The top 50 is full of new collaborations landing on the countdown, with “Bones” from Galantis featuring OneRepublic starting at #47 to lead things off. Bryce Vine‘s latest tune, the YG-assisted “La La Land”, follows at #48, which scored 39 stations on Tuesday to become the Most Added title at the format. Finally, the recent Rhythmic and Urban radio chart-topper “Going Bad” enters at #49 for Meek Mill featuring Drake, the latest single from Mill’s 2018 album Championships. Despite a lengthy history at both formats over the last few years, this is his first song to chart at the pop format.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (October 21, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. At this point, we may as well be asking how many seconds of fall are left, since summer is well behind us. Luckily, the summer is preserved on the pop chart and there are many sunny songs making some hot moves. Time to see what’s popping this Sunday:

FOUR OUT OF FIVE: This week looks to be the last one atop the pop survey for “Youngblood” from Australian group 5 Seconds Of Summer, which remains there for its fourth week. The song sheds over 750 spins from last Sunday. Taking a nice jump from 6-2, Ariana Grande‘s “God Is A Woman” is expected to enter the top spot next week, which will also likely be a multi-week #1 due to a lack of competition. (“God” is the only song currently gaining in the top six.) Soon enough, Grande will have two hits in the top ten simultaneously, with “Breathin” up from 18-14 on the latest update. How will both acts perform on the year-end survey? It’ll be here before you know it… meanwhile, “Youngblood” is still rising on the Hot AC chart, currently at #4, while Grande’s two hits are at #23 and #39, respectively, with “Breathin” at the higher position.

“LONELY” TOGETHER: Plenty of chart action in the lower half of the list this week, including four songs reaching the top 40. At #30, Drake and the late Michael Jackson soar from #43 last week with “Don’t Matter To Me”, the latest single from the former’s Scorpion album. It’s the 25th top 40 hit for Drake and the 37th solo entry for Jackson, a total which combines 33 songs that charted during the Radio & Records and/or Mediabase era (September 1973 – present) and four songs that made the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 prior to that time period. Of those three dozen chart records, this is Jackson’s third posthumous hit to enter the region; you might remember that he went to #38 in December 2010 with “Hold My Hand”, a duet with Akon, and #29 in June 2014 with “Love Never Felt So Good”, a duet with Justin Timberlake. Further down, Camila Cabello goes straight into the chart at #35 with her ninth solo top 40 hit, “Consequences”, boosted by a new Orchestra version of the song. The original version of the tune can be found on her former #1 album Camila. In with her eighth top 40 song, Alessia Cara leaps from 49-37 with “Trust My Lonely”, as country duo Dan + Shay crosses to the pop chart for the first time with “Tequila”, up 42-39. The song now ranks at #11 on the Hot AC list.

Four additional songs enter the top 50 this week, led by “Better” by Khalid at #41. It’s the lead radio single from his latest EP called Suncity, which debuted on Friday and could make the top ten on next week’s Billboard 200 chart. Just below him, “Sunflower” is up and sprouting at #42 for Post Malone and Swae Lee. Their current collaboration is featured in the upcoming movie Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, due December 14. The tune got as high as #2 on iTunes upon release two days ago. Another massive hit from a current box office winner enters the top 50 at #48, this song from A Star Is Born. The stars of that film, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, are new with “Shallow”, a cut that’s already in the top 20 on the Hot AC list after a massive jump during the last week. One last debut, sneaking in at #50, is a multi-artist collaboration that’s a former #1 song on the Rhythmic survey. “Big Bank” is making a lot of green for YG with featured acts 2 Chainz, Big Sean & Nicki Minaj. It’s also gaining in the top five on the Urban chart.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (September 25, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Aussie newcomer Dean Lewis says “Alright” to a breakout week, but will it be enough to lead the list? How did new releases from AJ Mitchell and Gryffin fare? Let’s add ’em up:

THE DEAN’S LIST: Thunder, clouds and heavy breathin’ were key elements in the mix on this week’s Top 40 report, which have also come into play during the past few weeks, but despite LSD and newcomer Lewis looking to finish at the top, it was the new hit by Ariana Grande that secured the coveted spot by leaping past the latter performer by only one add. “Breathin” collects another 35 stations, as Lewis’s “Be Alright” begins with 34 on impact, while LSD scores an additional 31 this week. “Be” is picking up nicely on the Hot AC chart, where it should enter the top 20 very soon. Both Grande and LSD impacted at the format yesterday, though it wasn’t a close race at all: the former’s “Breathin” began with 15 stations in a second place finish, while the latter’s “Thunderclouds” finished below the top ten.

From there, AJ Mitchell‘s “Girls” and Gryffin‘s “Tie Me Down”, a collaboration with Elley Duhé, performed solidly, ending at a total of 29 stations for the former (fourth place) and 26 stations (fifth place) for the latter. It’s Mitchell’s first release to be issued to the Top 40 format, though Gryffin’s collaboration with Illenium and Daya, “Feel Good”, picked up some minor spins here earlier in the year, largely due to mixshows and more progressive outlets. (The song was a bigger hit on the Dance chart.)

Stay tuned for next week to see where new singles from Shawn Mendes and Twenty One Pilots land in the top ten.
