RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 2/5 – 2/11/17

Record Rewind - February 12, 2017

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…
_____

JOE HICKS – “Best Clothes” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Hicks is a new name for the Rewind, but I think he’s got a sound that’ll stick around for some time on my radar. The retro-tinged jam is equal parts soulful and soft rock, and seems to be picking up some love on SoundCloud. All in all, “Clothes” dresses up very nicely.

_____

MARC SCIBILIA – “Summer Clothes” (iTunes) (Spotify)
It’s sure nice to have a bit of “Summer” in the middle of winter. Nashville’s Scibilia is doing pretty well for himself as an independent artist, having reached a million streams on two of his songs that were self-released last year. The acoustic pop track is worth a listen.

_____

RAINSFORD featuring SWIMSUIT ISSUE – “Sweet Spot” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Five months ago, this Los Angeles performer last appeared on the Rewind with a great single called “Too Close”. Needless to say, I’ll satisfy my “sweet” tooth’s craving with this delight, which should be another blog hit. The tropical influence on this tune is excellent.

_____

WILD – “Hold Us Together” (iTunes) (Spotify)
It’s been a minute since this Los Angeles trio caught my attention, but I really enjoyed their EP All We’ll Ever Have, especially tracks like “Silver & Gold” and “Where Love Lives”. Their radio-ready sound comes through again, a nice blend of light folk and bright pop.

_____

For more great new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
Adam Friedman – “Signals” (SoundCloud)
Benji Lewis – “Drift” (SoundCloud)
FRND – “Substitute” (SoundCloud)
LEVV – “Collateral Damage” (SoundCloud)
Lukr – “Astronaut” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 9/4 – 9/10

Record Rewind - September 11, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

ACT AS IF – “Taking It Slow”
This Los Angeles quartet has been around for several years now, last releasing an album in 2014 with Steady. Two songs off their forthcoming EP, due on Friday, were uploaded on SoundCloud during the week. They have an indie pop winner with this release.

_____

CAPPA – “Next Ex” (iTunes) (Spotify)
If you’re hungry for a delicious pop record, look no further than this Nashville singer’s Queen Of Hearts EP next week. Seriously, if you don’t know Carla Cappa yet, you’ve got some catching up to do. Her songs are polished perfection, and this is no exception.

_____

HIDININ – “Something Better”
Daniel Kadawatha and Sebastian Forslund make up this Swedish duo, and though the act is a new name for me, the two guys got a good amount of SoundCloud and Spotify support for their prior single, “Free But Hollow”. It’s pure pop with a positive message.

_____

JORDAN GABLE – “Didn’t Mean It” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Nashville’s Gable has been on our radar since earlier this year, when he was releasing catchy tunes like “Fool Of Me” and “Want U Anyway”. So, here’s one more to add to the list. He knows his sound, and he does it very well. I’m looking forward to more music.

_____

OFELIA K – “Another World” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Chaos Cave has to be one of the best EP titles so far this year, but beyond the name of that release, this Los Angeles singer has an extremely consistent track record of singles, some of which appear in this set of five tracks. Dig into that intriguing sound of hers.

_____

ROYAL TEETH – “Kids Conspire”
After a year or so with Elektra Records, which resulted in no major releases, the band from the Bayou State is back with a new EP titled Amateurs. The independent set is due on November 18. You’ll find these “Kids” running around the radio dial next month.

_____

VAN WILLIAM featuring FIRST AID KIT – “Revolution” (iTunes) (Spotify)
William leads the band WATERS, and while they continue on their next record, he’s crafting some great music as a solo act. A few months back, he released “Fourth Of July”. Now, he’s collaborating with the Swedish sister duo on a lovely folk single for the fall.

_____

WANDERER – “Call Me Crazy” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Tempe, AZ may be singer Adam Simons’s hometown, but he’s been finding a home in the blogosphere too. With 30,000 plays on SoundCloud and 200,000 on Spotify, his slick pop and new wave sound is spreading around. This might be his catchiest tune yet.

_____

For more new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
PUBLIC – “Perfect” (SoundCloud)
SCAVENGER HUNT – “Sweet Talk” (SoundCloud)
WILD – “American Love” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 7/3 – 7/9

Record Rewind - July 10, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the world of SoundCloud and my Indie Summer Mix on Spotify, these records stuck out as my favorite independent tunes of the week…

_____

BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT featuring ELTON JOHN – “Symmetry Of Two Hearts” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Next week marks the release of Rod Thomas’s latest album, Choreography, and based on the instant grat tracks so far, I think I’ll be enjoying it thoroughly. If you need a dose of 1987 in 2016, his intelligent and unabashedly bold pop melodies are a great treat.

_____

ELLE WATSON – “Phantom” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Watson last appeared on the blogs a couple of months ago; that’s when “Losing Any Sleep” debuted, a track that’s now achieved a massive 550,000+ streams on Spotify. Tapping into an ethereal R&B-flavored world, the haunting results are worth a few plays.

_____

GIRL FRIEND – “Hello Stranger”
This Manchester band has been a regular on my SoundCloud feed for about a year now, crafting great singles like “Tragic On The Dancefloor” and “Waste My Time”. Their latest gem, mixed by Louis La Roche, should be no stranger to your new music playlist.

_____

GRAHAM COLTON with EMILY HEARN – “Where You Wanna Go” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Colton’s had two big top five singles on my personal chart, including the #1 hit “Best Days” in 2008, so I’m always happy to find a new song from him. Collaborating with Hearn, their catchy folk/pop record is great for any road trip playlist this summer or fall.

_____

MYZICA – “Love & Desire” (iTunes) (Spotify)
The Nashville duo, consisting of Isaaca Byrd and Micah Tawlks, strikes again with a delicious bright pop record. It’s the first taste of their forthcoming album, due in September. Driven by synth and drums, “Love” effortlessly captures a youthful 80’s memory.

_____

SAM TINNESZ featuring MAGIC MANSIONS – “Doesn’t Get Better Than This”
Tinnesz has been busy with two different projects in the last year, one being WΛVE & ROME and the other under his given name. In either case, many of his songs have been on TV recently, so expect this potent punch of rock realness in your living room soon.

_____

VINYL THIEF – “Letting Me Off Easy” (iTunes) (Spotify)
The Touch EP from this Nashville quartet was finally released on Friday. They’ve served up some hot cuts from the set in the last few weeks, and the last track from it, a dark fusion of electronic and indie rock, is among my favorites. It easily gets my approval.

_____

X&Y – “Footprints”
Last summer, I found this U.K.-based trio’s song “Rocket Science” on SoundCloud, but this may be their best single to date. Both their writing and production have unleashed a fresh energy and bigger sound for this track. Dig into it (your ears, not your toes.)

_____

For more new music, we suggest…
ALLIE X – “All The Rage” (iTunes) (Spotify)
APOLLO LTD – “Goodbye” (SoundCloud)
WILD – “Where Love Lives” (iTunes) (Spotify)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 6/26 – 7/2

Record Rewind - July 3, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. We’ll be testing it out this month, so if you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the world of SoundCloud and my Indie Summer Mix on Spotify, these records stuck out as my favorite independent tunes of the week…

_____

BEACH TIGER – “Companion” (iTunes) (Spotify)
You may have heard this song in the mix of your favorite New Music Friday playlist. I’ve enjoyed their two prior singles, and it’s a good thing to say that they’re 3-for-3 for me now. The South Carolina band has mastered a great indie rock mentality that works.

_____

CAPPA – “Mad About U” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Attention pop girls: please clear the way for Carla Cappa. The Nashville performer delivers again with her new song, a saucy R&B flavored track with nice production. Her hot jam is a winner for the summer; call it another feather in her cap-pa. (I tried, really.)

_____

HANNAH GRACE – “Mustang” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Grace has been on my radar for a number of years now, and I’ve enjoyed songs like “Keep Your Love” and “Meant To Be Kind”. It looks like she’s about to add to my favorites, with a new EP due on July 15. Fusing 70’s rock with current pop, Grace shines again.

_____

KID RUNNER – “Give Me Something To Love” (iTunes) (Spotify)
If there’s one song this week that could be a big record at Alternative radio several months from now, it’s this excellent tune from the upcoming EP Body Language, due August 12. The Ohio band continues to get streaming love, and is poised for more success.

_____

RAINSFORD – “S.I.D. (Sunshine In December)”
Last year, Rainey Qualley had a pair of tracks issued to Country stations on a small label, including “Me And Johnny Cash”, which was spun on a number of outlets. Returning with a project under this new name, she flourishes with an edgy pop sound and lyric.

_____

VOKES featuring NEVVE – “Backroad” (iTunes) (Spotify)
He’s four singles into his new project, and it’s pretty clear that Los Angeles musician Mike Harris has a strong electronic soul vibe that’s hitting thousands of ears around the world. His latest track should continue to, ahem, drive up support in the coming days.

_____

WILD – “Silver & Gold” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Christmas in July? Not quite. Save the snow and tinsel for a later date, but do unwrap this gift from the Los Angeles trio. The last year has given the band a blog and streaming breakout, with “Back To You” and “Vagabond” leading the pack. Look out for more.

_____

YOUNG SUMMER – “Alright” (iTunes) (Spotify)
The summer is very young indeed, but this summery sound will get you feeling young again. D.C.-based singer Bobbie Allen has a great return single that dives into the pop pool of 80’s goodness. Don’t towel off just yet; you’ll want to ride this wave for a while.

_____

For more new music, we suggest…
GYPSY & THE CAT – “Life” (iTunes) (Spotify)
NATIVE PEOPLE – “Call Me” (iTunes) (Spotify)

SINGLE PREMIERE: Jessie J featuring Big Sean and Dizzee Rascal – “Wild” (+ Lyrics)

Young, "Wild" and free.

Young, “Wild” and free.

It’s not about the money, money, money… but it is about the new single. British singer Jessie J, best known for songs like “Domino” and “Price Tag” and her judging role the U.K. version of The Voice, is back with a new single, the first from her forthcoming second album. The song, “Wild”, features rapper Big Sean and Dizzee Rascal for a more urban flavor. It also sounds a bit like “Run The World (Girls)” by Beyoncé. Will the change in direction help her or hurt her on the charts? We’ll see in the next few weeks. Check out the song and lyrics below. Enjoy!

Watch the premiere of “Wild”. / Download “Wild” on iTunes.

(P.S. If anybody wants to help me out on Dizzee’s rap, that would be helpful…)

“WILD”

[Verse 1]
If I go hard let me tell you that it’s worth it
Play the right cards, I ain’t afraid to work it
Brush them right off when they say I don’t deserve it
Hands on my heart, you keep my fire burning

[Bridge]
Oh it feels so crazy when you scream my name
Love it when you rock me over every day
When I think about it I could go insane
And we are as beautiful, I’m blown away

[Chorus x2]
If this is a dream, won’t open my eyes
Am I asleep? No I’m alive
I just can’t believe that this is my life
In my fantasy, we’re running wild

[Verse 2]
When it gets rough and the rain starts pouring
I turn up the heat ’cause the drama ain’t important
Let ’em all talk-talk, I’mma just ignore it
Hands on my heart, you keep me moving forward

Oh it feels so crazy when you scream my name

[Rap – Big Sean]
B I G Sean don, OK
Today I woke up feeling like the mayor
Spent about an hour looking in the mirror
As I should, as much as I been through
It’s a wonder I look this damn good
Probably make it out any situation
That you try to put me into
If I swim with the piranhas guaranteed
That I’mma probably have a fish dinner
Met a young girl with a sexy shape
But like Jessie J, that we escapade where it’s extra shade
She make me wanna give and not take like collection plates
Wow, all the awards, brawls, call, wall to wall was all a mirage
And I could lose it all tonight
Just to show the world I could do it twice, live my life

[Chorus x2]
If this is a dream, won’t open my eyes
Am I asleep? No I’m alive
I just can’t believe that this is my life
In my fantasy, we’re running wild

[Rap – Dizzee Rascal]
… double the dollar
On my jetsettin’ rhythm, more hits than a white collar
But I can’t be buffed, flow tight like Bob Marley’s locks (I can’t be dropped)
I’m at the peak and I can’t be touched, I’m wil n’ out
… I can’t be stopped
Pull up the gnarly …
Opposite of calmly, I bet I get the party hard, I can’t be bluffed
Ten years plus runnin’ the game, you brothers just come in the game
But now I’m coming again, to get the people goin, …insane
100,000 people going bonkers when I’m out in the rain
Women on shoulders, … shouting my name
I’m willing to reign, why would I complain?
I thought I was the boy in the corner
But I’m in the penthouse and your boy is a baller
I believe in

[Chorus x2]
If this is a dream, won’t open my eyes
Am I asleep? No I’m alive
I just can’t believe that this is my life
In my fantasy, we’re running wild

Wild wild w-whoa (x4)
