RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 6/25 – 7/1/17

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

FJØRA – “Wild Animals” (iTunes) (Spotify)
This female newcomer was first spotted late last year on our listen through the annual Nashville Indie Spotlight sampler, which has a lot of talent for one set. “Wild” glides its way through the Top 40 landscape, delivering a fun and familiar sound in the blog world.

MYZICA – “Higher Places” (iTunes) (Spotify)
This Nashville duo (Isaaca Byrd and Micah Tawlks) was last noted on the Rewind in August of last year with an Ezra Carey-assisted cover of “Drive”, one of my favorite hits from The Cars. “Higher” brings out the enchanting nostalgia of mid-to-late 90’s alternative.

TIPLING ROCK – “Staring” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Summer sounds so good, now that our favorite Boston college band is back with another psychedelic pop gem for your current pool party playlist. The beachy feel of this guitar-driven track is effortless, and consistent with their catalog thus far. Jump in and enjoy!

WANDERER – “We Were So Young” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Wandering back onto the Rewind with his first original single since November of last year is Tempe-based singer/songwriter Adam Simons, who gets us reminiscing about the simplicity of summer days from years ago. It is especially good for the end of the season.

For more great new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
BLAIR – “Oceans” (SoundCloud)
CLAIRITY – “Pyrokinesis” (SoundCloud)
GREYSON CHANCE – “Seasons” (SoundCloud)
LOSTBOYCROW – “Spin The Globe” (SoundCloud)
WAVE & ROME – “Be My Girl” (SoundCloud)

Want to be featured on this weekly wrap-up? Submit your music to adamfsoybel@gmail.com and I’ll check our your tunes. Thanks!

ON THE RISE: Cool Acts, Hot New Releases (June 2015)

The PGTC SoundCloud page is still going strong with updated tracks from some great new and emerging acts, based here in the U.S. and abroad. I definitely enjoy sharing my favorites, including here on the blog, and this new artist spotlight is now a semi-regular. This time, we’re focusing on new singles and EPs, some streaming and some purchasable, from acts that call the States home, including two from California and two from Tennessee. Check them out to freshen up your summer playlist:

Boh Doran

BOH DORAN – “White Knuckles” / “Rainbow” (iTunes)
Location: Los Angeles, CA

Newcomer Doran has been creating music with Ethan Mentzer and Jon Kaplan for her debut, and based on the two singles that are out so far, it’s sure to contain more pop delights. With a musical palette that spans from classic soul to indie pop and a voice that hints at shades of Lisa Loeb and Nina Gordon, she tastes the “Rainbow” and shines brightly, while putting up a darker fight with her “White Knuckles”. Doran’s solid hook-driven tracks are bound to find an even greater audience, so watch out for more.

Max And The Moon

Location: Chino Hills and Los Angeles, CA

Rocketing back into the musical mesosphere this week is a four-man California band that has released several EPs over the past few years. However, it’s their latest work that’s getting quite a bit of love from the blogosphere and at streaming platforms. It is easy to see why: songs like “Harps” and recent posting “Turbulent” feature strong choruses with synth and guitar melodies, and the use of interesting vocal loops and samples. It’s familiar, yet fresh, and the synthesis between the two makes for one cool act.

WΛVE & ROME – Across The Map EP (iTunes)
Location: Nashville, TN

Singer/songwriter Sam Tinnesz is making waves (perhaps even in Rome) with his new solo effort, a change of pace from writing for other acts and his past exposure in MIKESCHAIR. His debut is marked by five solid tracks that straddle a line between indie pop and southern rock to create a dynamic vibe that fits the current Alternative radio landscape. All five tunes are worth a listen through, but the title song and “Hands Over Eyes” (recently featured on Nashville) rank among the highlights. Surf’s up, dudes.

Young Brother

YOUNG BROTHER – Kamikaze EP (iTunes)
Location: Nashville, TN

Through a series of samplers and song uploads, Dalton Diehl is quickly becoming one of my top discoveries and go-to acts for a shot of slick tuneage. Formerly of the band Samestate, he’s now a solo singer and songwriter, having attained some press in the last six months for the title track from this EP. Even better is “Man Up”, a burst of energetic, anthemic pop that lends itself well to huge radio and synch potential. It’s one of the best earworms so far this year. Pump that single and “Work It” up and jam on.

For more great music (or at least I would like to think so) and/or to get in touch, you can find the appropriate link above or click the “About Us” section to email your act in. Until next time, keep making that music!
