RECORD REWIND 2020: PGTC Picks, Week Seventeen

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…
_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
GRIFFIN OSKAR – “We Don’t Get High (Like We Used To)” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: First appearance

Oskar previously appeared on the Rewind twice as one half of the duo The NGHBRS, though I also enjoyed his previous major label EP Hostage, which was released by Republic in 2017. The strong pop ballad about a lost relationship isn’t lost on our weekly report.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
OSTON – “Shrug” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: First appearance

The Los Angeles-based performer has been steadily putting out her own material and collaborations since 2018, while finding some very solid editorial support on Spotify in the process. Don’t shrug off this catchy track: it’s a quirky and quality bop for your playlist.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
ALAINA CASTILLO – “Pass You By”
ELIO – “Body Language”
OVERSTREET – “Summertime”
SVRCINA – “Selfish”

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
PHOEBE RYAN – “Ring” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Third appearance

If Ryan’s name rings a bell, you may remember her time with Columbia Records when she released a number of tracks that did well in the streaming world, including 2015’s “Mine” and 2017’s “Dark Side”. Though she’s now independent, her music is still very nice.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
RAINSFORD – “2 Cents” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Sixth appearance

This is the sixth appearance to date on the Rewind for the daughter of actress Andie MacDowell and the talent definitely runs in the family. As she continues to carve a path in the electronic and synth-pop world, her stunning new single is worth much more money.

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
JESSE MCCARTNEY – “Yours” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Second appearance

With a new single out and rumors that he may be a fan of turtles, particularly singing turtles, the former Dream Street member and actor is having a moment with his reignited solo music career. This release, with a particularly personal set of lyrics, is quality stuff.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
SHY MARTIN – “Can I Call You Back?” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Sixth appearance

This is the third song of 2020 by Swedish singer/songwriter Martin to be featured on the Rewind, with “Slow” and “Still The Same” (a collaboration with Rewind alum Boy In Space) also catching my attention in prior weeks. We’ll call her new tune a very good cut.

Previously on the Rewind: Fourth appearance

Singer and songwriter Scott continues a year-long musical journey with his third release of 2020 and the fourth to make the weekly Rewind, which also included a duet with singer Brigetta. The rhythmic pop song is another good chapter in this already great cycle.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
STELA COLE – “Love Like Mine” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Second appearance

Yes, the woman of the hour is extending her hours on the Rewind, so you can take three minutes and eight seconds to stop and bop to her second song of 2020. Co-written with Gigi Grombacher and producer Nicki Adamsson, the tune is bold, hooky and a winner.

You’ll have to take it back to late last year to find the most recent Rewind appearances for these two artists, who were both featured on their respective weeks with collaborative efforts. Now, their new release together is a low key pop bop: a bit simple, but effective.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
NEW RULES – “Pasta” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: first appearance

While we’re craving a nice pasta dish from a fancy restaurant while self-isolating, the new song called “Pasta” is certainly filling too, as this young male group continues to build a passionate fan base with their charm and quality tunes. Our compliments to the chef!

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE

Last November, Dunlap was noted on an edition of the Rewind with another fantastic song, “If That’s Alright”. His new track, which was self-written with production by Los Angeles-based songwriter/producer Ben Zelico, is a great soft pop radio single to check out.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
SHOFFY featuring ANNA CLENDENING – “Bedhead” (Spotify)

After appearing on last week’s report with the Sabrina Carpenter-assisted “Tricky”, Shoffy is back on this week’s log with a song that features another singer who has appeared on our Friday Faves updates, Anna Clendening. It’s another great release from his album.

Though Carpenter has already managed to chart a handful of moderately successful singles on the Top 40 list, you might remember that Shoffy narrowly missed the top 40 last July with “Cool Again”, peaking at #41. Luckily, the cool factor on this track is still high.
