Chart Notes:

  • For the past ten weeks, three #1 songs by solo women have dominated the top spot. Now, a fourth song extends that total to 11. Dua Lipa‘s “New Rules” rules over my chart this week, up 3-1 in its 14th week in the top 40. The international hit is just below the top 15 on Top 40 radio, and is also posting nice gains at the Hot AC and Rhythmic formats. Last week’s #1, “What About Us” by P!nk, tumbles to #4 after three weeks at the summit.
  • No debuts are on my chart this week, but there are plenty of notable movers in the top 40, including Harry Styles‘s “Kiwi” (27-19) and The Head And The Heart‘s “Don’t Dream It’s Over” (23-16). Styles is looking for his third solo top ten single in a row, while the Seattle band is going for their first trip into the region. Stay tuned to see how they do!

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of May 5, 2017

Looking for “Room” at the top.

It’s a logical fight between a traveller and a logician this week, as two big releases attempt to steal the #1 spot away from Kendrick Lamar‘s hot set. Can one of them pull it off? Here’s all the action from this week’s schedule:

CHRIS STAPLETON – From A Room: Volume 1 (iTunes)
Stapleton’s sophomore album follows 2015’s Traveller, which garnered universal acclaim and a number of awards. It also ranked at #4 on the list of 2016’s best-selling albums here in the States. Lead single “Either Way”, which wasn’t released prior to the album in an unusual move, impacts at Country radio on Monday. It’s pretty clear that this will be a contender for #1, but it’ll have to compete with…

LOGIC – Everybody (iTunes)
The third studio album for this Maryland rapper is also looking at a notable first week, thanks to a lot of positive buzz and a nice list of collaborators. Of course, his first two albums reached the top five in the last few years, but his following continues to expand. “1-800-273-8255”, both the radio single and the number for the Suicide Prevention Hotline, is headed to the Rhythmic format.

Chart Notes:

  • This week’s Highest Debut is by a group that’s never hit my top 40 before, but they’ve had plenty of action on both the Triple A and Alternative charts. They are The Shins, and they’re new at #38 with “Name For You”. The tune is taken from the new album Heartworms, which is due next month. Look for it to hit the top of the Triple A survey soon.
  • Debuting a spot below them is “Believer” by Imagine Dragons, which rolls in at #39. You’ll be hearing this one in an ad for a video game company during the Super Bowl, which means it could see a big spike in sales and streams during the week. The release date and title of their third studio album have not been announced yet.
  • New singles and album cuts from Blondie, Depeche Mode and Michelle Branch all enter below the top 40 this week. It looks like there could be several debuts on the horizon next week, so check back to see what gets onto the chart!

TURN IT UP TUESDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (August 6)

This ain't no Teenage Dream.

Number “One”, perhaps?

From the fine folks in the world of folk to the pop acts who pop, here are all the releases you need to know about for the week of August 6:

  • Americana and folk duo The Civil Wars have this week’s biggest release with their second full-length album, a self-titled effort. With first single, “The One That Got Away”, currently in the top 100 on iTunes, it’s sure to debut high and be on the minds of the GRAMMY committee during award season. Look for it to potentially debut at #1, kicking out Robin Thicke from the top. (iTunes)
  • His single took several months to break at Country radio, but Brett Eldredge is looking at a winner this time around with the song “Don’t Ya”. You can find it on the album Bring You Back, which is out this week. (iTunes)
  • The 47th edition in the Now! That’s What I Call Music series is in stores today. The 20-song compilation features recent hits by Bruno Mars, Imagine Dragons and Selena Gomez, among others. (iTunes)
  • After a European release in June, KT Tunstall‘s latest album, Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon, is landing on shelves. It’s her first album to be co-released in the U.S. through jazz label Blue Note Records. (iTunes)
  • Best known as an actor, but also an accomplished musician, Hugh Laurie issues his second album, Didn’t It Rain. It recently hit the top 5 in the United Kingdom. (iTunes)
  • Other albums out this week include a deluxe edition of Elvis Presley‘s Elvis At Stax (iTunes), Home by Rudimental (iTunes) and the Animal EP by Ryan Star (iTunes).

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:

  • “Days Of Gold”, a new track from Jake Owen. (iTunes)
  • “Shake”, the first single from The Head And The Heart‘s forthcoming album Let’s Be Still. (iTunes)
  • “The Wire”, another taste of Haim‘s album, Days Are Gone. (iTunes)
  • “Wild Child”, a new song from Brett Dennen. (iTunes)

Next week, it’s all about country superstar Luke Bryan and his Crash My Party album, but Glen Campbell could offer up a surprise hit in See You There as he reinterprets his past singles. We’ll give you a preview next Tuesday!
