RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (January 6, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Enjoying 2019 so far? We sure are! As radio gears up for another year of musical madness, let’s see what’s popping this Sunday:

“HIGH” TIME FOR CHANGE: We start off the new year right we ended the old one: crossover hit “High Hopes” from Panic! At The Disco leads the Alternative, Hot AC and Top 40 charts simultaneously for the fifth week in a row, establishing a new record for the plays-per-week era. “High” is the first single to spend at least five weeks at the top of each individual format during the same run in nearly 20 years; Sugar Ray‘s “Every Morning” spent seven (Alternative), eleven (Hot AC) and seven (CHR/Pop) weeks at the top of these respective Radio & Records lists during the spring of 1999, though not at the same time. By next Sunday, Ariana Grande‘s hits “breathin” and “thank u, next”, both solidly in the top three, along with Halsey‘s “Without Me”, should get closer to dethroning Panic! At The Disco’s hit at the Top 40 format. Will one go all the way, or will Disco never truly die? Stay tuned for more.

Ella Mai‘s “Trip” marks the only top 40 debut on this week’s list, moving from 43-40. It’s her second song to reach the region at the format, with “Boo’d Up” going as high as #25 in September.

The purging of several older songs allows for some good debut action in the top 50, led by Post Malone‘s “Wow.” at #47. It’s one of three new tracks impacting at the format this week. Malone is still at #10 with his recent #1 hit “Better Now”, while his collaboration with Swae Lee, “Sunflower”, remains at #11. Further down, scottish trio CHVRCHΞS starts at #48 with “Miracle”, their first track to chart at this format. Last year, it became the act’s fifth top 40 entry on the Alternative chart. Nearly five years ago, their song “The Mother We Share” earned them their largest crossover success to date, reaching the top 40 at the Hot AC format in March 2014. The last of three top 50 entries on the latest update, bowing at #49, is an international smash from George Ezra. “Shotgun” became his first #1 song in countries like Australia and England last year. It’s also approaching the top 20 on the Hot AC chart. Ezra last charted at the Top 40 format in 2015 with another global hit, “Budapest”, which got as high as #18.
