NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of March 17, 2017

Get your Life.

The musical madness of March continues, and you can expect some notable jump shots and layups this week. Who’s got the sound of a slam dunk success? Enough alliteration, Adam, let’s check out all the action right here:

DRAKE – More Life (iTunes) – release date: 3/18 (Saturday)
What exactly is this? An album? A mixtape? A playlist? Whatever it is, it’s going to debut at #1. Of course, you’ll have to wait an extra day to actually listen to it. The biggest song from it thus far is “Fake Love”, which recently topped the Rhythmic and Urban charts. (A CHR/Top 40 run maxed out in the top 20.) Will it be able to pass Ed Sheeran‘s recent bow to become the biggest of 2017 so far? It certainly has the potential, given all the hype surrounding the release. Stay tuned.

DEPECHE MODE – Spirit (iTunes)
It’s hard to believe that these guys have been releasing albums since 1981, but this is the English group’s 14th full-length set. It might become their eighth top ten album in a row, a chain that started with 1990’s Violator. Lead single “Where’s The Revolution” is in the top 40 on Alternative radio. Considering the amount of older acts with new material that the format won’t play anymore, that’s very cool.

RICK ROSS – Rather You Than Me (iTunes)
Five out of Ross’s first six studio albums reached #1 on the Billboard 200, a very impressive feat at the time. His opening frames are still fairly solid, but he probably won’t be in the running for the top spot this time around. Single “I Think She Like Me” is just below the top 20 at Urban radio. Look for this set in the top ten.

MILKY CHANCE – Blossom (iTunes)
The German duo’s second album features the single “Cocoon”, which recently made the top 20 on the Alternative chart. Hey, it’s not “Stolen Dance”, but then again, what is? If their last set could reach the top 20, we’re expecting this one somewhere in the top 40.

More albums out this week: 2Cellos‘s Score (iTunes), Conor Oberst‘s Salutations (iTunes), Frances‘s Things I’ve Never Said (iTunes), Pitbull‘s Climate Change (iTunes), SoMo‘s The Answers (iTunes), Spoon‘s Hot Thoughts (iTunes), Zara Larsson‘s So Good (iTunes)

More EPs out this week: TBA

TURN IT UP TUESDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (August 5)

Are people Lovin' this Spoonful?

Are people Lovin’ this Spoonful?

Now serving… only the top new releases from that music menu we call the official release schedule. Hope you get your fill. Here’s what albums and singles are in stores for the week of August 5:

  • Back on the block with their first effort in four years is the quintet Spoon, in stores this week with They Want My Soul. (iTunes) “Do You”, the current single from the album, is just below the top ten at AAA radio. Also bringing the rock and looking for a top five debut on the Billboard 200 is Godsmack; they’re just about to hit #1 on the Active Rock survey with the title track from 1000HP. (iTunes)
  • Are compilations still your thing? The boys and gals at NOW That’s What I Call Music! have what you’re looking for with their Vol. 51 of current hits (iTunes) and dance collection Party Anthems, Vol. 2 (iTunes) this week. Look for the former to have a good shot a #1, while the latter will chart much lower.
  • Other releases out this week include: Al Jarreau‘s My Old Friend: Celebrating George Duke (iTunes), Andy Grammer‘s Magazines Or Novels (iTunes) and The Wind And The Wave‘s From The Wreckage (iTunes).

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:

  • “Anaconda”, new from rapper Nicki Minaj. (iTunes)
  • “Chains”, a new solo single (and not a hot Tina Arena remake) from Nick Jonas. (iTunes)
  • “First Time”, new from Australian singer/songwriter Vance Joy. (iTunes)
  • “God Of Ocean Tides”, new from the Counting Crows. (iTunes)
  • “Just Kids”, a digital pre-release track from Alex & Sierra. (iTunes)
  • “Promises”, a pre-release single from rapper Wiz Khalifa. (iTunes)
  • “Somebody To You”, a single and EP from boy band The Vamps. (iTunes)

No big names next week when it comes to new releases, but a small stack of Caleb Johnson, Porter Robinson, Tank and The Gaslight Anthem provides an interesting sample of what’s happening. A full preview is coming in seven!
