ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (October 9, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: over half a dozen big names compete for #1 with their current radio songs on the latest report, but in the end, it’s all about “Me”. No, really. Let’s add ’em up:

“ME” TWO TOO: It was a strong battle this Tuesday at Top 40 stations across the country, but the top two winners on the report prove that it’s all about “Me”. Halsey‘s “Without Me” tops the list this time around, with Drake‘s “Don’t Matter To Me”, featuring the late Michael Jackson, in second place. The former is in with a massive 105 stations, while the latter comes in with a still very respectable 76 stations. Needless to say, you can expect both records to bolt straight into the top 40 by the end of the week. For the former performer, her collaboration with Benny Blanco, “Eastside”, remains active at the format, as it approaches the top ten. At Rhythmic and Urban radio today, the latter single scored 35 and 41 stations on impact, respectively, while earning 16 stations from the Hot AC panel yesterday.

Additionally, new singles from Alessia Cara and Khalid reach the top five on the report, with “Trust My Lonely” starting in third place at 45 stations and “Better” appearing in fourth place with 39 stations, respectively. Next week, Cara’s song impacts at the Hot AC format on Monday, while Khalid’s new one also impacted at the Rhythmic format today, totaling 23 stations on that report. (He also performs on Blanco’s “Eastside”, as mentioned above.) The two singles appear bound for the top 50 in the coming days.

Labelmates Camila Cabello and Mariah Carey and their new songs are ready to take on a soundtrack release from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper next Tuesday. Which star single will be born at the top? Come back and find out soon.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (October 2, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Shawn Mendes and Zedd go on a worldly adventure together, but their flight is full of passengers like Twenty One Pilots and Why Don’t We. Who safely lands at the top? Let’s add ’em up:

BIG IN “JAPAN”: “Lost In Japan” is not lost on a large number of pop programmers this week, as the new single by Mendes and its new remix by Zedd easily leads this week’s adds report at the Top 40 format. Eclipsing the triple-digit mark at 113 stations, it’s a leader on two lists this week, as the single also led the Hot AC report yesterday with a total of 22 stations. “Lost” had a strong entry at #37 on Sunday’s official update, thanks in part to hourly airplay at iHeartMedia outlets last Thursday upon the remix’s debut. At this point, it looks like the song will have some good upward movement at both formats by the end of this weekend.

The numbers drop off significantly from there, though it’s a solid week for the latest single from Twenty One Pilots, who fly onto the Top 40 report with “My Blood”, which is already well into the top ten on the Alternative survey. The track comes in with a third place finish, landing at 30 stations. Two years ago, the duo scored with a string of three big hits that all reached #1 or #2: “Stressed Out” (#1 for two weeks), “Ride” (#1 for one week) and the Suicide Squad cut “Heathens” (#2 for three weeks).

Get ready for a massive session next week with at least six impacting titles, including new tunes by Alessia Cara, DrakeHalsey and Khalid, among others.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. SHAWN MENDES & ZEDD, “Lost In Japan (Remix)” (Island/Republic)
2. ARIANA GRANDE, “Breathin” (Republic)
3. TWENTY ONE PILOTS, “My Blood” (Fueled By Ramen/EMG)
4. SILK CITY & DUA LIPA, “Electricity” (Columbia)
5. KANYE WEST & LIL PUMP, “I Love It” (G.O.O.D./Def Jam-Warner Bros.)
6. THE CHAINSMOKERS featuring KELSEA BALLERINI, “This Feeling” (Disruptor/Columbia)
7. LSD (LABRINTH/SIA/DIPLO), “Thunderclouds” (RECORDS/Columbia)
8. WHY DON’T WE, “8 Letters” (Signature Ent./Atlantic)
9. BAZZI featuring CAMILA CABELLO, “Beautiful” (APG/Atlantic)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (September 25, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Aussie newcomer Dean Lewis says “Alright” to a breakout week, but will it be enough to lead the list? How did new releases from AJ Mitchell and Gryffin fare? Let’s add ’em up:

THE DEAN’S LIST: Thunder, clouds and heavy breathin’ were key elements in the mix on this week’s Top 40 report, which have also come into play during the past few weeks, but despite LSD and newcomer Lewis looking to finish at the top, it was the new hit by Ariana Grande that secured the coveted spot by leaping past the latter performer by only one add. “Breathin” collects another 35 stations, as Lewis’s “Be Alright” begins with 34 on impact, while LSD scores an additional 31 this week. “Be” is picking up nicely on the Hot AC chart, where it should enter the top 20 very soon. Both Grande and LSD impacted at the format yesterday, though it wasn’t a close race at all: the former’s “Breathin” began with 15 stations in a second place finish, while the latter’s “Thunderclouds” finished below the top ten.

From there, AJ Mitchell‘s “Girls” and Gryffin‘s “Tie Me Down”, a collaboration with Elley Duhé, performed solidly, ending at a total of 29 stations for the former (fourth place) and 26 stations (fifth place) for the latter. It’s Mitchell’s first release to be issued to the Top 40 format, though Gryffin’s collaboration with Illenium and Daya, “Feel Good”, picked up some minor spins here earlier in the year, largely due to mixshows and more progressive outlets. (The song was a bigger hit on the Dance chart.)

Stay tuned for next week to see where new singles from Shawn Mendes and Twenty One Pilots land in the top ten.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. ARIANA GRANDE, “Breathin” (Republic)
2. DEAN LEWIS, “Be Alright” (Island/Republic)
3. LSD (LABRINTH/SIA/DIPLO), “Thunderclouds” (RECORDS/Columbia)

5. GRYFFIN with ELLEY DUHÉ, “Tie Me Down” (Darkroom/Geffen/Interscope)

7-T. PANIC! AT THE DISCO, “High Hopes” (Fueled By Ramen/RRP)
7-T. YG featuring 2 CHAINZ, BIG SEAN & NICKI MINAJ, “Big Bank” (Def Jam)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: take a breather with Ariana Grande‘s latest hit, as well as new tracks by a plethora of pop performers. The action is on, so let’s add ’em up:

NOW WITH ADDED SWEETENER: Just before Yom Kippur begins and we fast for the day, the Top 40 panel is dining on lots of sweet treats with a pop punch. Leading the way, “Breathin” from the aforementioned Grande takes the air right out of our lungs, but in a good way, landing at the top of this week’s report with 43 stations on impact. The song edged into the #40 position on this past Sunday’s published update, giving the singer three tunes in the top 40 simultaneously. (Of course, her other two hits currently are “God Is A Woman” and “No Tears Left To Cry”, which are in the top ten.) Continued support for Mike Posner‘s new hit “Song About You” returns the single to second place with 27 new stations, tied with “Happier” by Marshmello x Bastille, while the rest of the top five is comprised of additional impacting titles from David Guetta featuring Anne-Marie (#4) and Dan + Shay (#5). The former, “Don’t Leave Me Alone”, starts with 26 stations, while the latter, “Tequila”, is new at 22. Just one other song is making its first appearance in the top ten, down at #10. With 15 stations on impact, that’s “Loyal To Me” by Nina Nesbitt.

Next week, expect solid debuts from several format newcomers, including AJ Mitchell and Dean Lewis. Check out the report on Tuesday evening, right here on PGTC.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (September 16, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Don’t lie… you love to check out all the huge action on the pop airwaves. Well, this week, we’ve got plenty of new figures and interesting stats. Here’s what’s popping this Sunday:

WHAT LIES AHEAD: A huge congrats is in order for “Love Lies” by Khalid x Normani from the soundtrack to Love, Simon, the new #1 song on this week’s Top 40 chart. It reaches the top in its 25th week in the top 40, which ties for the second-slowest run to #1 in the plays-per-week era with 2012’s “Give Your Heart A Break” by Demi Lovato. Of course, that record is held by a song which hit the top in its 26th week: 2016’s “Here”, the debut single by Alessia Cara. Both acts earn their second #1 song on the pop chart, with Normani scoring her first solo chart-topper, having previously reached the summit with pop quintet Fifth Harmony. “Lies” has the distinction of being the first male-female duet from a movie to reach #1 at the format since 1993, when “A Whole New World”, a duet between Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle from Aladdin, spent three weeks there. Do Khalid and Normani get a second ride to #1? With a little magic, and a lot of love, it’s certainly a possibility.

NEW TO THE CITY: As songs by Loud Luxury and Ariana Grande enter this week’s top 40, the latter becoming Grande’s 18th single to make the region, another pair of songs reach the top 50 for the first time. Receiving a jolt at #44, the duo Silk City and pop queen Dua Lipa are in with “Electricity”. Silk City consists of two known musicians and producers, Diplo and Mark Ronson. In a solid finish on Tuesday, it was the Most Added song at Top 40 radio and should shock the top 40 sometime within the next week. On that same report, there were also a number of early adds for the song that bows at #49: “Song About You” by Mike Posner. That hit officially heads for adds at Alternative, Hot AC and Top 40 radio this week and could very well score the Most Added title at all of the formats in question. That being said, there is quite a bit of competition, so check back on Tuesday to see the final results. Posner is in the hunt for his second #1 at the format; two years ago, “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” spent two non-consecutive weeks atop the chart.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (September 11, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: an electric collaboration impacts at the format, but a pre-impact pop song (that may or may not be about you) is picking up some classic call letters. Let’s dive in and add ’em up:

TAKIN’ BACK THE CITY: As Rosh Hashanah comes to a close once again, it’s a sweet new year (at least, so far) for the new duo Silk City (consisting of Diplo and Mark Ronson) and pop star Dua Lipa, who charge up the format with their “Electricity”. On impact, the song shocks a total of 34 stations, making the hot collaboration the Most Added song at the Top 40 format this week. It appears on Lipa’s forthcoming reissue of her self-titled album, out October 19. The two producers have released a handful of tracks so far in 2018, including collaborations with soloists such as Daniel Merriweather and Desiigner, though it’s not clear if an EP or album from the duo may be coming in the near future.

Meanwhile, Mike Posner has a very strong start for “Song About You”, which he hopes will be his first top 40 single at the format since 2016, when “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” spent two non-consecutive weeks at the top. A week before its official impact date, “Song” is not singing blue, but it is seeing green with 30 stations during this session. Posner’s latest single will be facing off against several competitors on next week’s adds update, including a collaboration from David Guetta and Anne-Marie, the first crossover song by country duo Dan + Shay and a personal favorite from pop singer Nina Nesbitt.

Expect both “Electricity” and “Song About You” to reach the top 50 by the weekend. Stay tuned for more pop madness on PGTC!
