ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (September 4, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: we say “Goodbye” to the long weekend with a reactive collaboration. Now, let’s check out what’s powering the pop format and add ’em up:

ONE GOOD BUY: In one of the more predictable results this year, “Goodbye”, the new collaboration by Jason Derulo x David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj and Willy William, easily finishes at #1 on this Tuesday’s Top 40 report, partially due to the lack of competition following the Labor Day holiday. It starts with 109 stations on impact, towering over the #2 entry by a giant margin of 85 stations. Holdovers make up most of the rest of the top ten, though there’s a noteworthy entry for Urban and Rhythmic radio hit “Sicko Mode” by Travis Scott, tying for eighth place with ten stations this week. (An official impact date has yet to surface.)

Though nothing is currently on the schedule, stay tuned for more information regarding any titles impacting next week.

2. CALVIN HARRIS & SAM SMITH, “Promises” (Capitol-Columbia)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (August 28, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: established collaborations continue to lead the way, though some reactive Alternative crossovers from Imagine Dragons and Panic! At The Disco are hoping to break through. Let’s add ’em up:

HAPPIER TIMES ARE HERE: Results were slower than last week across the Top 40 panel, as many outlets opted not to report ahead of the holiday weekend. That being said, for those stations that did submit their adds, it was a mixed bag of proven pop titles and some solid impacting songs in the top ten. Last week’s leader, “Happier” by Marshmello and Bastille, secured another week at the top, picking up 34 more stations. Just behind that collaboration is the hit that landed in second place a week ago, “Promises” from Calvin Harris and Sam Smith, in with 29 stations this time around. Tied for third at 27 stations, “Beautiful” by Bazzi and Camila Cabello and “Natural” by Imagine Dragons, which had a last-minute impact scheduled, were also solid for the day.

For other songs officially going for adds this week, BTS‘s first collaboration with Nicki Minaj, “Idol”, picked up a nice 23 stations in its first week, just ahead of “Thunderclouds” by LSD (the act featuring Labrinth, Sia and Diplo) and “High Hopes” by Panic! At The Disco with 20 stations each. Respectively, the first title ranks in fifth, while the other two are tied for sixth. All three songs should appear in the top 50 at the format in the next couple of weeks.

Have a great Labor Day weekend and enjoy the extra time off!

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN

3-T. IMAGINE DRAGONS, “Natural” (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope)
5. BTS featuring NICKI MINAJ, “Idol” (BigHit/Columbia-YMCMB/Republic)
6-T. LOGIC featuring RYAN TEDDER, “One Day” (Def Jam)
6-T. LSD (LABRINTH/SIA/DIPLO), “Thunderclouds” (RECORDS/Columbia)

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (August 26, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. It’s the last chart update for August already! Where’s the time gone? While we try to figure out the answer to that one, check out this week’s hottest hits on the latest report:

FAREWELL TO “YOU”: As we return to the “Songs That Never Seem To Go Away” department, “Girls Like You” from Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B continues its run at #1 on the Top 40 chart for the fifth week. It’s the act’s longest run at #1 here since 2012, when “One More Night” collected eight weeks at the top between September and November of that year. “Girls” also has an enormous lead atop the Hot AC chart in its fourth week at the summit, more than 1,200 spins over the song in the runner-up position. However, the Top 40 list will finally see a new #1 next week, as the tune that’s been docked at #2 for four consecutive weeks, “Better Now” by Post Malone, makes it ascent to the top. Behind him, it’ll be a wild fall of potential #1 songs, so stay tuned!

“HIGH” EXPECTATIONS: It’s a nice week for collaborations making the top 40, as the newest releases by Logic featuring Ryan TedderTyga featuring Offset and Calvin Harris & Sam Smith all enter the region at the Top 40 format. For Harris and Smith, their single “Promises” bypasses the top 50 and goes straight into the top 40 at #40, becoming Harris’s 18th and Smith’s tenth single to make it this high. Additionally, Weezer scores their first top 40 hit since 2005 with their remake of Toto‘s “Africa”, rising 46-39.

Leading a parade of three top 50 debuts this week, Marshmello x Bastille‘s “Happier” is new at #41, about two dozen spins shy of the top 40. Though the latter group’s had some solid success on the Alternative radio chart, they’ve only managed to place two songs in the top 40 at this format: 2014’s “Pompeii”, which spent two weeks at #3 that March, and 2016’s “Good Grief”, which just reached #38 that November. Additionally, Panic! At The Disco‘s “High Hopes” (#47) and PRETTYMUCH‘s “Summer On You” (#49) are welcomed to the top 50; the former group is headed towards their fourth top 40 song here, while the latter group is hunting for their second such entry. Will they make it before the summer comes to a close? We’re pretty much unsure, but never say never, as it could surprise.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (August 21, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: two top collaborations by Marshmello x Bastille and Calvin Harris & Sam Smith make the pop panel happier, but what else is popping at the format? Let’s add ’em up:

BREAKING PROMISES: We’ve been pretty happy lately, but we sure are happier seeing the song “Happier” at the top position. The first collaboration from Marshmello and Bastille puts a smile or two on the Most Added report, with a hefty first week total of 64 stations. “Happier” is also the Most Added song at the Alternative format this Tuesday, with a Hot AC impact date coming up next month. Bastille recently topped the Alternative chart for a week with “Quarter Past Midnight”, while Marshmello stalled at #2 on the Top 40 chart in a collaboration with Anne-Marie called “Friends”.

Meanwhile, another two first-time collaborators, Calvin Harris and Sam Smith, keep their promise for a good first week on the adds report with “Promises”, which breaks at 53 stations during its first session. (Of course, it’s not breaking any promises; it’s just the label breaking it at the format.) The release still holds at #1 on iTunes throughout certain parts of Europe, including the United Kingdom, though it just missed the top ten at the service here in the States. Harris’s recent pop smash with Dua Lipa, “One Kiss”, just exited the top ten at the format. (It’s still in the top 40, however.)

Next week, look out for LSD‘s “Thunderclouds” and Panic! At The Disco‘s “High Hopes” in their quest for the Most Added song in the country. The latter track ranked just below the top ten on the report this week, and has been receiving a fair amount of early airplay since the start of the month.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. MARSHMELLO x BASTILLE, “Happier” (Astralwerks/Capitol)
2. CALVIN HARRIS & SAM SMITH, “Promises” (Capitol-Columbia)
3. BAZZI featuring CAMILA CABELLO, “Beautiful” (APG/Atlantic)
4. IMAGINE DRAGONS, “Natural” (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope)
5. BENNY BLANCO, HALSEY & KHALID, “Eastside” (Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope)
6-T. LOGIC featuring RYAN TEDDER, “One Day” (Def Jam)
6-T. LOVELYTHEBAND, “Broken” (RED)
8-T. THE CHAINSMOKERS featuring EMILY WARREN, “Side Effects” (Disruptor/Columbia)
8-T. TIESTO & DZEKO featuring PREME and POST MALONE, “Jackie Chan” (Casablanca/Republic)
10. WEEZER, “Africa” (Crush Music/RRP)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (May 29, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: how slow can you go? Following the Memorial Day break, quite slow. That doesn’t mean there aren’t a few winners in the bunch, however. Let’s add ’em up:

READY, SET, “GO”: As the format crawls ahead following the holiday weekend, numbers are, expectedly, smaller for this week’s update. That being said, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” by the Backstreet Boys leads the list for the second time with a nice total of 37 new stations, down from 51 last week, when it was tied with two other tracks for the Most Added title. That sum puts it nearly 20 stations ahead of two songs tied for second place, one of which (BTS‘s “Fake Love”) doesn’t impact until the middle of June.

The only impacting song of note this week is a release that just moved into the top 40 at the format: “I Like It”, a collaboration that includes Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin, which lands an additional 15 stations and a (tied) fifth place finish. This is the latest hit from the female performer’s recent #1 effort, Invasion Of Privacy, which continues to perform well in the U.S., especially in the streaming world. Look for her collaboration with Maroon 5, a remix of the act’s “Girls Like You”, to appear toward the top of next week’s report.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1-T. BACKSTREET BOYS, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” (RCA)
2-T. BTS, “Fake Love” (Columbia)
2-T. JENNIFER LOPEZ featuring DJ KHALED & CARDI B, “Dinero” (Epic)
4. DENNIS LLOYD, “Nevermind” (Warner Bros.)
5-T. 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER, “Youngblood” (Capitol)
5-T. CARDI B, BAD BUNNY & J BALVIN, “I Like It” (KSR Group/Atlantic)
7. JULIA MICHAELS featuring TRIPPIE REDD, “Jump” (Republic)
8. DRAKE, “Nice For What” (YMCMB/Republic)
9-T. SAM SMITH featuring LOGIC, “Pray” (Capitol)
9-T. ZAYN, “Let Me” (RCA)

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (April 8, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Spring is finally in the air, and that means a few new seasonal smashes are also sprouting in the lower rungs of the survey. What’s getting planted in the world of pop? Check out all the action:

ZEDD OF HOUSEHOLD: Get in the car and head for the ATM; it’s time to mix top 40 tunes and Target trips with Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey, as “The Middle” holds at #1 for the second week on the Top 40 radio chart. It gains just under 1,000 spins in the current tracking week, landing it above 18,000 spins during the last seven days. Morris’s “Rich” continues its rise in the lower rungs of the Country chart, though it’s still below the top 40. Meanwhile, on both surveys, “Meant To Be” from Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line appears to be headed towards the top spot, holding at #3 on the Country list and up 3-2 on the Top 40 airwaves. The big collaboration currently appears on Rexha’s EP All Your Fault: Pt. 2, which was released in August of last year, and it is meant to be in the mix for her forthcoming full-length album Expectations, due later this year. Who gets the prize next Sunday? At this point, “Middle” has the edge for a third week at #1, but “Meant” could always spring ahead. Stay tuned.

PRELUDE TO A “KISS”: After receiving hourly airplay across iHeartMedia stations during its first day in the market, the current collaboration from Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa enters at #32 on the published chart update. “One Kiss”, which should appear on Harris’s forthcoming album later this year, is now the 17th top 40 song for the Scottish-born performer and the sixth for the English singer, the latter also at #21 this week with “IDGAF” off her self-titled album. Much of the action in the top 50 is also slow, but there are two entries in the region, led by Echosmith‘s “Over My Head” at #47. It’s the trio’s first chart song with the current lineup, and marks their first time in the top 50 since October 2015, when “Let’s Love” also reached that #47 position. (“Over” is likely to make it higher in the coming weeks.) Lastly, at #50, Sam Smith and Logic prepare to “Pray” for Top 40 glory with a new version of a song that originally appears on Smith’s set The Thrill Of It All from last year. Additionally, “Pray” is at #30 on this week’s AC update, and should rank on the Hot AC chart very soon.
