RECORD REWIND 2020: PGTC Picks, Week Thirteen

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…
_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
MOKITA & ELLA VOS – “Take It Back” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fourth appearance / Third appearance

You’ll have to take it back to late last year to find the most recent Rewind appearances for these two artists, who were both featured on their respective weeks with collaborative efforts. Now, their new release together is a low key pop bop: a bit simple, but effective.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
NEW RULES – “Pasta” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: first appearance

While we’re craving a nice pasta dish from a fancy restaurant while self-isolating, the new song called “Pasta” is certainly filling too, as this young male group continues to build a passionate fan base with their charm and quality tunes. Our compliments to the chef!

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
KENNEDI – “Apology”
R3HAB & ANDY GRAMMER – “Good Example”
SAM CREIGHTON – “Go To Hell”

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 22, 2020)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. In these very difficult times, please stay safe and don’t jeopardize your health. Here’s what’s popping at the Top 40 format this week:

“NOW” MORE THAN EVER: Dua Lipa‘s huge hit “Don’t Start Now” earns a fifth week at #1 on the Top 40 chart, up more than 350 spins from last week. “Don’t” now ties the run for “New Rules” at this format, which accomplished its five weeks in January and February 2018. Elsewhere, the song moves from 5-4 at Hot AC radio and from 16-13 on the AC chart.

K-pop group Monsta X scores their second top 40 single this week with “You Can’t Hold My Heart”, up 41-38. Last September, the French Montana-assisted “Who Do U Love?” spent two nonconsecutive weeks at #23. Debuting at #39, 5 Seconds Of Summer picks up their 11th top 40 hit to date with “Old Me”. It’s their third single to chart from the album Calm, due on Friday. Bryce Vine also makes a huge jump from 50-40 with “Baby Girl”, which marks his fourth top 40 entry since 2018.

BTS and Sia are “On” their way up the pop survey with this week’s #47 debut. One other collaboration is new to the region: landing at #50, it’s New Hope Club and R3HAB‘s “Let Me Down Slow”. This is the first time on the chart for the English trio.

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist this week. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here are five singles impacting this week at the Top 40 format:

DIPLO featuring MORGAN WALLEN & JULIA MICHAELS, “Heartless” (Columbia)
Album: Diplo Presents Thomas Wesley (2020)
Past T40 History: Wallen hasn’t previously charted here. Diplo’s collaboration with the Jonas Brothers, “Lonely”, climbed to #26.

FUTURE & DRAKE, “Life Is Good” (Freebandz/Epic)
Album: TBA (2020)
Past T40 History: Four years ago, these guys peaked at #42 at the format with “Jumpman”, taken from What A Time To Be Alive.

LAUV, “Modern Loneliness” (AWAL/in2une)
Album: ~How I’m Feeling~ (2020)
Past T40 History: Lonely enough, Lauv? This follows the Anne-Marie collaboration “F**k, I’m Lonely”, a #30 single from last fall.

MEDUZA, BECKY HILL & GOODBOYS, “Lose Control” (Astralwerks/Capitol)
Album: TBA (2020)
Past T40 History: One prior Meduza and Goodboys collaboration, “Piece Of Your Heart”, narrowly missed hitting the top 50 here.

NEW HOPE CLUB & R3HAB, “Let Me Down Slow” (Hollywood)
Album: New Hope Club (2020)
Past T40 History: Last year, the English group received some airplay at the format for “Love Again”, but it didn’t make the top 50.

Justin Timberlake and SZA should con-troll the top of the adds report come next Tuesday with a new soundtrack cut.

RECORD REWIND 2019: PGTC Picks, Week Forty One

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…
_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
ZAC PAJAK – “Again” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: First appearance

Singer and songwriter Pajak has a great pop tune with this cut, which comes from hitmaker Jake Gosling’s independent label called Goldun Egg. It’s previously given us some good singles by a female performer named NUUXS, which included Pajak’s involvement.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
ELLIOT JONES – “I’m In Love”
HEARTS & COLORS – “F*ck It Up”
JEREMY LOOPS – “What Would I Know”
JOEL ADAMS – “Slipping Off The Edge”
R3HAB x ELLA VOS – “Exhale”

RECORD REWIND 2019: PGTC Picks, Week Six

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
BLAKE ROSE – “Lost” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Second appearance

Australian performer Rose appears to be blooming like a rose with his second single to date, which received notable support at both Apple Music and Spotify on Friday and ranked among the top 60 pop titles on iTunes. His awesome song is poised to do even more.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
KIM PETRAS – “If U Think About Me…” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fourth appearance

Three is better than one, and Petras knows it well, having just released another three songs on Thursday of last week. While the two others are collaborations, this solo cut ranks as my favorite of the tracks by far. No need to think about it: this pop bop is a nice one.

PICK OF THE WEEK: THREE
R3HAB x ICONA POP – “This Is How We Party” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Third appearance (Icona Pop records for Big Beat Records, distributed by Atlantic Records)

Here’s a great dance release with a nostalgic twist: the song interpolates another track of the same name by S.O.A.P., a Danish duo whose European hit peaked at #21 on the CHR/Pop chart in May 1998. This update keeps it fresh and should be a solid club record.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
ADAM MELCHOR – “Three Hours Ahead”
ADAM&STEVE featuring MATY NOYES – “Wherever You Are”
CHRIS JOBE – “Cry”
COOPER & GATLIN – “Like You”
GRANT LANDIS – “Home To Momma”
GREYSON CHANCE – “Shut Up”
SOPHIA ANGELES – “Anybody Else”
SVRCINA – “Insecure”
