ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (May 14, 2019)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber collaborate on one dynamite release, as the overall numbers slow down a bit due to a lack of competition. Let’s add ’em up:

“DON’T” TOUCHES THAT DIAL: After a pair of perfect weeks here at the format, “I Don’t Care” by Sheeran and Bieber makes it three, picking up adds at all 184 stations on the Top 40 panel this Tuesday. It’s the first perfect week for both artists. The track is now the fifth song in the Mediabase era and the sixth in the plays-per-week era on the pop survey to accomplish this feat. It landed just outside the top 20 on last Sunday’s published chart and should be well into the top 15 by this coming weekend’s chart. “I Don’t Care” also topped the adds results at Hot AC radio yesterday, picking up another 90 stations there.

Of this week’s other impacting titles, newcomer Christian Paul‘s “Strong” is in with a solid 18 stations and a third place finish. In a fifth place tie with 12 stations, Kygo and Rita Ora‘s “Carry On” is off to a slightly weaker start. A number of proven singles from artists like AJ MitchellLizzo and Panic! At The Disco make up the rest of the top ten on the latest update.

Next week, look for Halsey‘s “Nightmare” to scare up some major adds from the panel. Who will join her? Stay tuned.

1. ED SHEERAN & JUSTIN BIEBER, “I Don’t Care” (Atlantic-Def Jam)
2. BILLIE EILISH, “Bad Guy” (Darkroom/Interscope)
3. CHRISTIAN PAUL, “Strong” (12Tone/SRP)
4. MAX featuring QUINN XCII, “Love Me Less” (Arista/RED)
5. DADDY YANKEE & KATY PERRY featuring SNOW, “Con Calma” (El Cartel/UMLE/Capitol)
5-T. KYGO & RITA ORA, “Carry On” (Palm Tree/RCA)
5-T. LIZZO, “Juice” (Atlantic)

(Due to a lack of activity this week, a full report will return next week.)

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (May 5, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Brother, can you spare a hit? Sibling singles remain in control of the pop survey, while a few returning faces can be found further down the list. Here’s what’s popping at the Top 40 format this Sunday:

THE POWER OF THREE: Three brothers, three weeks. “Sucker” from the Jonas Brothers holds at #1 for the third week on the pop chart, as it climbs to #6 on the Hot AC survey. The song is taken from the album Happiness Begins, which hits stores on June 7. Follow-up single “Cool” cools off a little bit this week, though it’s up a notch to #16 on the Top 40 chart and #26 at Hot AC. “Sucker” is still gaining in airplay on the pop airwaves, up a little over 200 spins versus last week, though it’s unclear if the group will stay put for a fourth week at the top.

Crashing in at #25, Shawn Mendes has this week’s highest-charting debut with his eighth top 40 hit, “If I Can’t Have You”. This is the second consecutive week that a new song debuts within the top 25; last week, it was “ME!” by Taylor Swift featuring Brendon Urie that entered at #24, which subsequently jumps all the way up to #10. Mendes’s new track is not related to the song of the same name by Yvonne Elliman off the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, which had a two-week run at #1 in April 1978. Other than this lofty debut, Jennifer Lopez is up from 42-40 with the French Montana-assisted “Medicine”, giving Lopez her 23rd top 40 entry and Montana has third. Coincidentally, this month marks the 20th anniversary of “If You Had My Love”, her first chart hit, breaking into the top 40: it moved from 49-35 in the Radio & Records issue dated May 14, 1999, which reflected the airplay of the prior week.

There are four more entries reaching the top 50 for the first time, led by Bazzi‘s “Paradise” at #41. It should enter the top 40 by next weekend. The first collaboration for MAX and Quinn XCII, “Love Me Less”, debuts at #45. The featured performer is searching for his first top 40 song at the format, having previously received minor airplay for his single “Straightjacket” and a featured appearance on Ayokay‘s “Kings Of Summer”. Another collaboration, this one from SZA, The Weekend and Travis Scott, bows at #46. From the compilation For The Throne: Music Inspired By The HBO Series Game Of Thrones, “Power Is Power” should continue to rise up as the chart as the current season of the show unfolds. Finally, at #50, boy band In Real Life returns with “Crazy AF”. A year ago, it was “Tattoo (How ‘Bout You)” that earned them their first top 40 single, spending two weeks at #28 in May and June. Will this track go higher? We’ll know Real soon.

RADIO REPORT: What’s Popping At Top 40 Radio This Week (April 22-23, 2019)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist this week. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here’s a set of six impacting songs this week at the Top 40 format:

BAZZI – “Paradise” (Artist Partner/Atlantic)
Album: TBA (2019)
Past T40 History: Last July, Bazzi led his first chart single “Mine” to the top for a week. Will this song earn him his second #1 hit?

DADDY YANKEE & KATY PERRY featuring SNOW – “Con Calma” (UMLE/Capitol)
Album: TBA (2019)
Past T40 History: Heavily sampling Snow’s “Informer”, this cut marks the rapper’s first appearance on the survey since July 1993.

DAN + SHAY – “Speechless” (Warner Bros.)
Album: Dan + Shay (2018)
Past T40 History: With another former #1 track at the Country radio format, we’ll see if this duo can make it 2-for-2 on this chart.

MAX featuring QUINN XCII – “Love Me Less” (Arista/RED)
Album: TBA (2019)
Past T40 History: MAX’s “Lights Down Low” spent over a year in the top 40 before it eventually made the top ten, climbing to #7.

OBB – “7 Billion” (Curb-Word)
Album: TBA (2019)
Past T40 History: These three guys are new to the format. The last Curb release to reach the top 50 here was almost ten years ago.

SZA, THE WEEKND & TRAVIS SCOTT – “Power Is Power” (Columbia)
Album: For The Throne: Music Inspired By Game Of Thrones (Soundtrack) (2019)
Past T40 History: With more than a dozen top 40 titles between them, the soundtrack single should have a powerful impact week.

Next week: two words. Taylor Swift. That is all. (We’ll see if anyone else dares to impact on the date soon.)

Which of these new songs would you like to see top the charts? Let me know!
