RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (November 24, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. “Good” times are ahead on the pop survey… are you ready for the latest top bops in the radio universe? Here’s what’s popping at the Top 40 format this week:

“GOOD” STUFF: It’s been a big breakout year for Lizzo and it just keeps getting better. This week, she earns her second #1 single on the Top 40 survey with “Good As Hell”, up 2-1. The multi-format hit also jumps from 8-7 and 18-15 on the Rhythmic and Hot AC radio lists, respectively. With a slow holiday week on the horizon, it should easily earn a second week at the top.

From TikTok to top 40 success, newcomer Arizona Zervas soars onto the survey all the way up at #33 with “Roxanne”, which also jumps right into the top 30 on the Rhythmic list. Another single that’s also been developing on the video app is “Make You Mine” by the new trio PUBLIC, which makes its entry with a move from 41-38. Zedd and Kehlani‘s “Good Thing” jumps from 50-39 on the chart, giving the two performers their 15th and fourth top 40 entries, respectively. Finally, up from 46-40, Louis Tomlinson takes “We Made It” into the region, earning him his third solo top 40 hit outside of One Direction.

Billie Eilish, who already appears in the top 20 with “All The Good Girls Go To Hell”, is in at #43 with “Everything I Wanted”. The tune was released as a one-off single last week and does not appear on her current studio album. “Checklist” checks in at #47 for the first collaboration by MAX and Chromeo, as Ed Sheeran, Camila Cabello and Cardi B are headed “South Of The Border” and into the #48 position. The latter collaboration impacts at the format in early December. It also enters the Hot AC chart at #49.

Have an amazing Thanksgiving from PGTC!

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (October 27, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Halloween and hit albums are always full of treats (and a few tricks), so get yourself ready for some spooky stats. Here’s what’s popping at the Top 40 format this week:

THAT SPECIAL “SOMEONE”: Lewis Capaldi holds at #1 for the second week on the Top 40 chart with “Someone You Loved” in its 21st week in the top 40. The global smash is steady at #2 and #6 on the Hot AC and AC radio lists, respectively, and could lead the Billboard Hot 100 when the newest update is revealed tomorrow. It’s going to be a close one. Meanwhile, you can expect it to hit three weeks at the top of this survey next week, as its nearest competition is too far away to bother it.

Ranking in the top 40 with her 17th hit as a solo artist, Selena Gomez blasts in at #29 with “Lose You To Love Me”, the lead single from her forthcoming studio album. It also reaches the top 40 on this week’s Hot AC survey. After reaching the top 40 last week as a featured artist on French Montana‘s “Writing On The Wall”, Post Malone gains his 13th top 40 entry with the Ozzy Osbourne and Travis Scott-assisted “Take What You Want”, jumping from 46-39. It’s Osbourne’s third top 40 song and first since the spring of 1992. Scott is now up to six top 40 hits at the format. Finally, climbing from 47-40, Tones And I checks in with her very first top 40 single, “Dance Monkey”. The song remains at #1 in several countries and is just below the top 20 on the Alternative radio chart.

Further down the list, BTS and Lauv break in at #46 with “Make It Right”, marking their first charting collaboration here. The new trio Public steps in at #48 with “Make You Mine”, their first tune to enter the top 50, while Kesha and Big Freedia shake into the region at #50 with “Raising Hell”, a song that was released this past Thursday. It, and Gomez’s new track above, head for adds at the format on Tuesday.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (October 22, 2019)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: BTS and Lauv make a stand at the format, while a bunch of new releases break into the mix with a top five start. Let’s add ’em up:

STARTING ON THE “RIGHT” FOOT: The K-pop stars known as BTS had a solid opening week for their Lauv-assisted version of “Make It Right”, a new release last Friday, which picked up 45 stations during the session. Ed Sheeran co-wrote the track, which made its debut (as solely a BTS song) earlier this year. Blackbear‘s “Hot Girl Bummer” earned another 29 stations this week for a third place finish, tying it with Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber‘s “10,000 Hours”, which finally had its official impact here.

A pair of newcomers to the format, Tones And I and PUBLIC, finished the day in fifth and sixth place with “Dance Monkey” and “Make You Mine”, respectively. “Dance” (at 21 stations) has become a global smash in the last few months, hitting #1 in well over a dozen countries, including Australia, Sweden and the United Kingdom. “Make” (at 14 stations) has steadily earned an audience via the video app TikTok, which continues to drive interest in viral songs.

Recent releases from Billie Eilish, Charlie Puth and Post Malone are among those prominent songs making up the rest of the top ten.

The new track from Selena Gomez, which is due tomorrow, will be the likely champion on next week’s report. “Lose You To Love Me” received a handful of early adds this week.

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 11/27 – 12/3

Record Rewind - December 4, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

ADAM FRIEDMAN – “Sad” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Santa Monica singer and songwriter Friedman returns with his follow-up to “Lemonade”, and how sweet it is to have him back. This track had a fair amount of love from Spotify’s New Music Friday playlists a few days ago, including the popular U.S. list. Get happy!

_____

MATT WOODS – “If You Forget Me” (iTunes) (Spotify)
This gorgeous ballad from Woods is off his EP called Ain’t No Use, which is amazing from start to finish. Of course, I’ve spent some time with his past material, and his voice is just spectacular. He could sing the phone book and I would stream it. Yes, it’s that great.

_____

PUBLIC – “4Her” (iTunes – n/a) (Spotify – n/a)
This Cincinnati group quickly hit the top of Hype Machine’s Twitter list a few days ago, and that should bode well for their single on SoundCloud (and more services soon, hopefully!) “4Her” has a fresh and fun vibe that should appeal to indie pop and tropical fans.

_____

WANDERER – “Make You Feel” (iTunes) (Spotify)
I wandered into this Arizona performer’s catalog earlier this year, and I’m certainly glad I did. Adam Simons has a great set of songs with his C I T Y EP, one of which was highlighted on the Rewind in September: “Call Me Crazy”. Call me a big fan of his music so far.

_____

For more great new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
LONELY BENSON – “Leave You Mama” (SoundCloud)
P O P F I L T E R – “In Love Again” (SoundCloud)
THE DUNWELLS – “It’s OK This Time” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 9/4 – 9/10

Record Rewind - September 11, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

ACT AS IF – “Taking It Slow”
This Los Angeles quartet has been around for several years now, last releasing an album in 2014 with Steady. Two songs off their forthcoming EP, due on Friday, were uploaded on SoundCloud during the week. They have an indie pop winner with this release.

_____

CAPPA – “Next Ex” (iTunes) (Spotify)
If you’re hungry for a delicious pop record, look no further than this Nashville singer’s Queen Of Hearts EP next week. Seriously, if you don’t know Carla Cappa yet, you’ve got some catching up to do. Her songs are polished perfection, and this is no exception.

_____

HIDININ – “Something Better”
Daniel Kadawatha and Sebastian Forslund make up this Swedish duo, and though the act is a new name for me, the two guys got a good amount of SoundCloud and Spotify support for their prior single, “Free But Hollow”. It’s pure pop with a positive message.

_____

JORDAN GABLE – “Didn’t Mean It” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Nashville’s Gable has been on our radar since earlier this year, when he was releasing catchy tunes like “Fool Of Me” and “Want U Anyway”. So, here’s one more to add to the list. He knows his sound, and he does it very well. I’m looking forward to more music.

_____

OFELIA K – “Another World” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Chaos Cave has to be one of the best EP titles so far this year, but beyond the name of that release, this Los Angeles singer has an extremely consistent track record of singles, some of which appear in this set of five tracks. Dig into that intriguing sound of hers.

_____

ROYAL TEETH – “Kids Conspire”
After a year or so with Elektra Records, which resulted in no major releases, the band from the Bayou State is back with a new EP titled Amateurs. The independent set is due on November 18. You’ll find these “Kids” running around the radio dial next month.

_____

VAN WILLIAM featuring FIRST AID KIT – “Revolution” (iTunes) (Spotify)
William leads the band WATERS, and while they continue on their next record, he’s crafting some great music as a solo act. A few months back, he released “Fourth Of July”. Now, he’s collaborating with the Swedish sister duo on a lovely folk single for the fall.

_____

WANDERER – “Call Me Crazy” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Tempe, AZ may be singer Adam Simons’s hometown, but he’s been finding a home in the blogosphere too. With 30,000 plays on SoundCloud and 200,000 on Spotify, his slick pop and new wave sound is spreading around. This might be his catchiest tune yet.

_____

For more new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
PUBLIC – “Perfect” (SoundCloud)
SCAVENGER HUNT – “Sweet Talk” (SoundCloud)
WILD – “American Love” (SoundCloud)
