RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (January 17, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. For all the newest positions and what songs are occupying them, let’s take a look at what’s popping at the format this week:

STILL IN POSITION: Leading the Top 40 chart for a fifth week, Ariana Grande‘s “Positions” remains strong at the format. She also enters the top ten with “34+35”, climbing from 11-8. The latter track impacts at the Hot AC format this week, where it currently appears at #41 and bulleted.

Disney star Olivia Rodrigo makes the jump to the Top 40 radio list with her first charting single way up at #30. “Driver’s License” should be named the new #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 update tomorrow, making her the first artist of 2021 to debut at the top. Leaping from 43-38 is “Without You”, the second top 40 hit from The Kid LAROI. The two word main title has entered the top 40 in at least seven decades now, from Johnny Tillotson back in 1961 and Nilsson in 1972 to more recent songs by Hinder in 2008 and David Guetta and Usher in 2011. The last of the top 40 entries comes from Saweetie and Doja Cat with “Best Friend”, in at at #40. It’s their third and fifth top 40 hits at the format, respectively. The former’s Jhené Aiko-assisted “Back To The Streets” lifts from 3-1 on the Rhythmic radio chart.

Newcomer CJ has this week’s top new entry in the top 50 with his viral rap hit “Whoopty”, which lands at #47. One notch lower, the Zara Larsson and Young Thug collaboration “Talk About Love” debuts at #48. One final single sneaks in at #50: “Fly Away”, the latest chart entry from Tones And I.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (January 10, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. If you’re craving a lil bit of pop radio action, here’s what’s popping at the format this week:

A CLEAR POSITION: Easily earning a fourth week at #1, Ariana Grande leads the Top 40 chart once again with “Positions”. At the Rhythmic and Hot AC formats, the song is still gaining and appears at #11 and #14, respectively.

Spain’s HVME has this week’s only new song in the top 40 with “Goosebumps”, a flip of a Travis Scott song, which leaps from 42-38. It’s his first top 40 hit.

In the top 50, three new entries are led by Australian performer The Kid LAROI, who debuts at #43 with “Without You”. The song is the follow-up to “So Done”, which moves up to #27 on the list. Landing at #44, Nelly and Florida Georgia Line are in with “Lil Bit”. Of course, the duo worked with Nelly on the remix of their crossover hit “Cruise”, which spent four nonconsecutive weeks at #7 in June and July 2013. The only other entry of note is Fousheé‘s “Deep End”, a recent viral tune that comes in at #50.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (December 27, 2020)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. For all the top pop positions you want, here is a look at what’s popping at the format this week:

FROZEN POSITIONS: As we hit the midway point of the holiday freeze, superstar Ariana Grande is frozen at #1 on the Top 40 chart for a second week with the title cut from her album Positions. The follow-up single, “34+35”, advances from 15-13.

Ed Sheeran has this week’s only new entry in the top 40 with “Afterglow”, which debuts way up at #25. It’s his 21st top 40 hit. The song is also doing very well at the Hot AC format in its first week, where it enters at #19 and marks his 17th top 40 hit.

Three seasonal songs scored enough airplay to enter the top 50 this week, but will be gone by the next update: the Jonas Brothers return to the chart at #45 with “Like It’s Christmas”, Mariah Carey‘s new version of “Oh Santa!” (with the aforementioned Grande and Jennifer Hudson) lands at #47 and Taylor Swift‘s “Christmas Tree Farm” starts at #49. The original version of Carey’s tune dates back to 2010, while the other two entries were released last year.
