RADIO REPORT: POP! Goes The Picks (November 2015) (Part One)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new singles will be lighting up the national charts during the month. Which tracks will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here’s a small selection of new songs being serviced in November from four different radio formats in the first part of this month’s Radio Report:

CHR (*) and HOT AC (**)

Tori Kelly
TORI KELLY – “Hollow” (November 2) (*)
Label: Capitol
The 22-year-old California singer/songwriter has been impressing many in the past few months after her album debuted at #2 in July and her participation in several big TV performances. However, radio has yet to fully back Kelly’s releases. Her previous two singles struggled to make it out of the teens at the format, and fell pretty quickly. Will third time be the charm for the performer?

Zella Day
ZELLA DAY – “Hypnotic” (November 2) (**)
Label: Pinetop/Hollywood
During the spring, this song almost reached the top 20 on Triple A radio and bobbed in and out of the top 50 at Alternative radio. Now, it’ll try to pick up stations at Hot AC, where it’s already seeing some action on a few west coast outlets. The singer is just 20, but she’s already accomplished much in her career. You can also check out another of her cuts in the trailer for The Finest Hours.

Kelly Clarkson
KELLY CLARKSON – “Piece By Piece” (November 9) (**)
Label: RCA
After missing the top ten at Hot AC by just one spot with “Invincible” over the summer, the original Idol winner hopes to get back into the region with the title track from her most recent studio album. The song was co-written with Greg Kurstin, who also had a hand in co-writing “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” and producing several of her other singles. We’ll see how it does next year.

Marianas Trench
MARIANAS TRENCH – “One Love” (November 9) (**)
Label: Interscope
This Vancouver quartet has achieved its fair share of success in Canada, with several hit albums and a string of certified singles. It hasn’t affected their status in the U.S. market, however; despite many attempts to launch them at radio in the States, it’s not been easy. So, expectations aren’t high, unless the song is fueled by the On The Verge program, but at least they’ll be charting up north.

Adam Lambert
ADAM LAMBERT – “Another Lonely Night” (November 16) (* + **)
Label: Warner Bros.
The former Idol runner-up is set to impact two formats just before the Thanksgiving break with the second release from his third major-label effort, The Original High. Though “Ghost Town” wasn’t a big chart hit in the U.S., it performed nicely in a handful of countries, including Australia and South Africa. It’s also the second-most streamed cut from the album at the moment on Spotify.

JOJO – “When Love Hurts” (November 16) (*)
Label: Atlantic
Three months after the digital release of III., the comeback “tringle” from the 24-year-old singer, one of the singles included on it will head to the format that she landed three top tens on between 2004 and 2006. Her last pop radio release, “Disaster”, climbed to a peak of #28 in February 2012. Let’s hope that all the hype and press from over the summer months is not totally buried now.
