RADIO REPORT: What’s Popping At Top 40 Radio This Week (September 3-4, 2018)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist this week. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here’s the lone song impacting this week at the Top 40 format:

JASON DERULO x DAVID GUETTA featuring NICKI MINAJ and WILLY WILLIAM – “Goodbye” (Warner Bros.)
Album: TBA (2018)
Past T40 History: The pairings of Guetta and Minaj (two prior top 40 hits) and Derulo and Minaj (one) are familiar to this format.

Next week: No songs are currently on the schedule just yet, but watch out for new singles from Dan + Shay (“Tequila”) and Nina Nesbitt (“Loyal To Me”) as they impact in two weeks.

Which of these new songs would you like to see top the charts? Let me know!

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (September 2, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Hope you’re enjoying the extended weekend due to the Labor Day holiday, because things are really heating up here on the pop chart. Here’s what’s burning on the latest report:

HITTING THE POST: After a month at #2, “Better Now” by Post Malone finally reaches the top of the pops, marking the second #1 on the Top 40 survey for the performer in 2018. It follows the Ty Dolla $ign-assisted “Psycho”, which had a four-week run at #1 from mid-June to early July. Both songs are taken from the album Beerbongs & Bentleys, which also topped the Billboard 200 chart earlier this year. Making our way around the other radio charts, “Better” checks in #3 at the Rhythmic list, #23 at Hot AC and #43 at Urban. You can also find Malone on the Tiësto & Dzeko single “Jackie Chan”, which rises to #17 at Top 40 this week and leaps into the top 40 on the Rhythmic chart at #36. It’s unclear what’ll happen beyond this week; Malone has enough of a distance between the next bulleted song in the top five and his “Better” to stay at the top for a second week, but anything could happen. Stay tuned!

HELLO, “GOODBYE”: Riding some killer waves into the top 40 on the latest chart, it’s surf’s up for “Happier” by Marshmello x Bastille, serving a gnarly move from 41-30. It’s Marshmello’s fifth top 40 song at the format and Bastille’s third hit. Meanwhile, the “Ocean” comes to the region, courtesy of Martin Garrix featuring Khalid, up 42-38. It’s also Garrix’s fifth top 40 entry here, while Khalid grabs his seventh hit. Panic! At The Disco‘s “High Hopes” is next into the water, climbing 47-39 to become their fourth top 40 release at the format, as Cheat Codes x Little Mix splash up from 44-40 with their first collaboration together, “Only You”. It’s the trio’s third top 40 single here, and the quartet’s fifth.

This week’s highest new entry in the top 50 is a four-way collaboration called “Goodbye”, as we say hello, hola and bonjour to Jason Derulo x David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj and Willy William. It checks in at #41. Derulo and Minaj previously teamed up a year ago on the song “Swalla”, which spent three non-consecutive weeks at #19 last May and June. Guetta and Minaj have now made the top 50 together on four different entries, a run that started with 2011’s “Where Them Girls At”, a #12 hit that August, followed by “Turn Me On”, reaching #2 that March, and most recently “Light My Body Up”, which stumbled to #48 last April. That’s not all for a Queen like Minaj this week, as she also enters at #46 on a remix of the BTS hit “IDOL”. It’s the K-pop act’s third single to debut here since late last year, when they first entered the list with the Desiigner-assisted remix of “MIC Drop”, spending two non-consecutive weeks at #24 this past January. Other entries in the region this week include Ariana Grande‘s “Breathin” (#48), which is receiving unsolicited airplay, as well as the latest single from The Vamps, “Just My Type”, at #49. Finally, from the “Who?” file, two acts who haven’t previously entered here before, Bobby Green and featured artist Midian, rank at #50 with a song called “Warrior”. Except for a handful of spins, the majority of the airplay for this song is in overnight rotation in low rank markets.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (August 28, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: established collaborations continue to lead the way, though some reactive Alternative crossovers from Imagine Dragons and Panic! At The Disco are hoping to break through. Let’s add ’em up:

HAPPIER TIMES ARE HERE: Results were slower than last week across the Top 40 panel, as many outlets opted not to report ahead of the holiday weekend. That being said, for those stations that did submit their adds, it was a mixed bag of proven pop titles and some solid impacting songs in the top ten. Last week’s leader, “Happier” by Marshmello and Bastille, secured another week at the top, picking up 34 more stations. Just behind that collaboration is the hit that landed in second place a week ago, “Promises” from Calvin Harris and Sam Smith, in with 29 stations this time around. Tied for third at 27 stations, “Beautiful” by Bazzi and Camila Cabello and “Natural” by Imagine Dragons, which had a last-minute impact scheduled, were also solid for the day.

For other songs officially going for adds this week, BTS‘s first collaboration with Nicki Minaj, “Idol”, picked up a nice 23 stations in its first week, just ahead of “Thunderclouds” by LSD (the act featuring Labrinth, Sia and Diplo) and “High Hopes” by Panic! At The Disco with 20 stations each. Respectively, the first title ranks in fifth, while the other two are tied for sixth. All three songs should appear in the top 50 at the format in the next couple of weeks.

Have a great Labor Day weekend and enjoy the extra time off!

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (July 10, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: superstars Drake and Justin Timberlake are in their feelings with that top spot in sight, as they battle for the crown. Who’s leading the soul patrol? (Sorry, Taylor Hicks, not you.) Let’s add ’em up:

YOUR “SOUL” PROVIDER: With our holiday week in the rearview mirror, the Top 40 radio panel gets back to work with some cool new records in the heat of the summer. Of the most notable releases entering the top ten this week, “In My Feelings” by Drake and “SoulMate” by Justin Timberlake lead the way. It was a close race for most of the day, but in the end… yes, it was a tie! Each of the two songs reported 34 adds this week, which gives both “Feelings” and “SoulMate” bragging rights. Will either of these releases hold onto the top spot all on their own next week? We’ll see next Tuesday evening.

Elsewhere, Ella Mai‘s recent Urban radio chart-topper “Boo’d Up” scores a solid third place finish with 21 new stations. “Magic In The Hamptons” also gives new duo Social House a potential future hit at the pop format, as the Lil Yachty-assisted track scores 15 stations on impact, good for a fourth place finish.

Watch out for Juice WRLD‘s “Lucid Dreams”, a streaming monster that impacts here a week from now.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1-T. DRAKE, “In My Feelings” (YMCMB/Republic)
1-T. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, “SoulMate” (RCA)
3. ELLA MAI, “Boo’d Up” (Interscope)

5-T. BEBE REXHA, “I’m A Mess” (Warner Bros.)
5-T. NICKI MINAJ featuring ARIANA GRANDE, “Bed” (YMCMB/Republic)

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (July 3, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: it’s a hit holiday, with minimal action in the top ten. However, we can dive into the “Ocean” for some great action from Martin Garrix and Khalid, as proven radio records by Alessia Cara, Bebe Rexha and others continue to score. Let’s add ’em up:

WHAT A MESS SHE’S MADE: With most radio programmers headed for a well-deserved break over the next few days, most of the top ten songs on this week’s report are relatively unchanged from the last few weeks. Rexha’s “I’m A Mess” repeats at #1, with a second week total of 30 adds, as “Remind Me To Forget”, the collaboration from Kygo featuring Miguel that’s been chosen for On The Verge programming by radio giant iHeartMedia, lands in second place with 24 new stations.

The only new track of note this week is that reactive collaboration from Garrix and Khalid, “Ocean”, which scores at 21 stations this Tuesday for a fourth place finish. It should approach the top 50 by the weekend. Next week, look out for the debut single by Social House, the Lil Yachty-assisted “Magic In The Hamptons”, to impact at the format. Happy 4th of July!

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. BEBE REXHA, “I’m A Mess” (Warner Bros.)
2. KYGO featuring MIGUEL, “Remind Me To Forget” (Ultra/RCA)
3. ALESSIA CARA, “Growing Pains” (Def Jam)
4. MARTIN GARRIX featuring KHALID, “Ocean” (RCA)
5. 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER, “Youngblood” (Capitol)
6. NICKI MINAJ featuring ARIANA GRANDE, “Bed” (YMCMB/Republic)
7-T. CARDI B, BAD BUNNY & J BALVIN, “I Like It” (KSR Group/Atlantic)
7-T. MEGHAN TRAINOR, “Let You Be Right” (Epic)
9. POST MALONE, “Better Now” (Republic)
10-T. SABRINA CARPENTER, “Almost Love” (Hollywood)
10-T. TIESTO & DZEKO featuring PREME and POST MALONE, “Jackie Chan” (Casablanca/Republic)

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (July 1, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Happy (Almost) 4th of July! Get the grill on and the pool cleaned up, because it’s about to be one hot week. Meanwhile, it’s still pretty hot on the charts, so let’s get into it:

HOW IT’S POST TO BE: Post Malone holds at #1 for the fourth week on the Top 40 survey with his Ty Dolla $ign-assisted hit “Psycho”, though its reign is likely coming to an end next week, as Bazzi‘s “Mine” (#2) or Ariana Grande‘s “No Tears Left To Cry” (#3) approach the top spot. Malone won’t be out of the #1 position for long, however, as his follow-up “Better Now” rises from 21-18 this week. (More on Malone’s updated chart action below.) Four songs bust into the top 40, led by the latest On The Verge selection: “Remind Me To Forget” by Kygo featuring Miguel, at #31. iHeartMedia’s current pick for their chain-wide airplay program geared toward emerging acts is puzzling, to say the least, as this is the fifth top 40 entry for both men. Additionally, Kygo spent three weeks at #2 last June with a Selena Gomez collaboration called “It Ain’t Me”. Nicki Minaj and the aforementioned Grande are next up, up 41-33 with “Bed”. It’s the 36th top 40 hit on the Top 40 chart for Minaj, who hasn’t reached the region as a lead artist since 2015. Grande, who previously collaborated with Minaj on the five-week chart-topper “Side To Side”, is up to 16 top 40 entries. After a pair of #26-peaking songs last year, “Thumbs” and “Why”Sabrina Carpenter hopes her third top 40 title will go a lot higher. “Almost Love” advances from 46-38, just one notch ahead of Bebe Rexha‘s “I’m A Mess”, which breaks in at #39 to become her 13th top 40 single at the format. Her new one interpolates a portion of “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks, which spent three weeks at #1 in July and August of 1997.

I’M WITH THE BANDIT: Three additional songs are new to the top 50 this week, which all happen to be collaborations. “Solo” is new at #45 for Clean Bandit featuring Demi Lovato, a recent #1 song in the United Kingdom. Though the English act is far more successful in Europe than it is here, “Solo” could become their fifth top 40 entry at the format next week. Coming in at #49, there’s a third and final Post Malone sighting on the pop chart. Tiësto and Dzeko‘s “Jackie Chan”, which features he and Preme, is making some big moves both in the U.S. and globally. This is the first time that Dzeko and Preme have charted in the top 50 here. Painting a pretty pop picture at #50, we have the week’s last entry: “Colour” by MNEK featuring Hailee Steinfeld. MNEK’s prior top 40 title was also a collaboration, 2016’s “Never Forget You” with Zara Larsson. Steinfeld’s had six top 40 entries since 2015 on the Top 40 chart, four of which were duets or collaborations.
