NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of May 19, 2017

Parkin’ in the top lot.

Another awesome May weekend is upon us, and the weather, much like the music, is getting hotter and hotter. Take a dip inside this pool of pop, rock, country and more, as we serve up the action on this week’s notable releases:

LINKIN PARK – One More Light (iTunes)
This California band is out with their seventh studio album, and while it’s not the next Hybrid Theory, one could theorize that it is a strong contender for the top slot on next week’s Billboard 200 listing. It’s led by a polarizing first single, “Heavy”, featuring faceless favorite Kiiara. It tanked at the Alternative format, but it remains in the top 20 at both Hot AC and Top 40 radio. We shall see how the album performs soon.

RASCAL FLATTS – Back To Us (iTunes)
The 11th studio album from this enduring trio follows a seasonal album from last fall, which reached the top ten on the Country list. This set is also led by an interesting single, “Yours If You Want It”, which has struggled with a sluggish run (at least, for a lead single by the group) up the Country airplay chart. However, their fan base is strong enough to lead the band to another solid debut.

More albums out this week: A R I Z O N A‘s Gallery (iTunes), Fastball‘s Step Into The Light (iTunes), Missio‘s Loner (iTunes), MisterWives‘s Connect The Dots (iTunes), Papa Roach‘s Crooked Teeth (iTunes), Snoop Dogg‘s Neva Left (iTunes), Dirty Dancing (Soundtrack) (iTunes)

More EPs out this week: David Archuleta‘s Orion (iTunes), Jasmine Thompson‘s Wonderland (iTunes)

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:
“All Around The World”, Mura Masa featuring Desiigner (iTunes)
“Automatic”, Mondo Cozmo (iTunes)
“Baby Who”, The Aces (iTunes)
“Bad Liar”, Selena Gomez (iTunes)
“Bones”, Dotan (iTunes)
“California Numb”, Cloves (iTunes)
“Can’t Believe”, Kranium featuring Ty Dolla $ign & WizKid (iTunes)
“Castle On The Hill (Seeb Remix)”, Ed Sheeran (iTunes)
“Crying In The Club”, Camila Cabello (iTunes)
“Dead”, Madison Beer (iTunes)
“Death Wish”, Terror Jr (iTunes)
“Dig Down”, Muse (iTunes)
“Dime”, Rachel Crow (iTunes)
“Girlhood”, The Preatures (iTunes)
“Hands”, Mike Perry featuring The Vamps and Sabrina Carpenter (iTunes)
“Heavy”, Oh Wonder (iTunes)

Chart Notes:

  • It’s Ed Sheeran‘s world, and we’re all living it. The singer/songwriter is now up to his third chart hit from ÷ on my chart. At #36, “Galway Girl” is the week’s Highest Debut, while “Shape Of You” slips to #12 and “Castle On The Hill” stays at #2 for its third week. Galway, of course, is a city in Ireland, though it’s unclear if the Galwegians are content with all the attention as of late. I guess we’ll see soon!
  • Aussie sextet Sheppard now has just as many chart entries as they do members. Their sixth song to reach my top 40, “Keep Me Crazy”, debuts at #38. Their single’s already hit in the top 40 in Australia. The group first made my chart in the spring of 2013 with “Let Me Down Easy”, which topped out at #10 that July.
  • In case you missed it, make sure to check out the new Crowncast, a podcast co-hosted by Crownnote owner Kurt Trowbridge and yours truly. It’s a fun listen, full of music statistics and shade, and we’d really appreciate your support. Thanks!

RADIO REPORT: POP! Goes The Picks (March 2017)

Radio Report - March 2017

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist during the month. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here’s a selection of new singles being serviced in March in this month’s Radio Report:

SHERYL CROW – “Halfway There” (Warner Bros., March 6 – Triple A)
Album: Be Myself (2017)
Past AAA History: She’s had a long history at the format, including five #1 hits. 2002’s “Soak Up The Sun” spent eight weeks there.

LORDE – “Green Light” (Lava/Republic, March 6 / 7 – Hot AC and CHR/Top 40)
Album: Melodrama (2017)
Past CHR/HAC History: “Royals” (2013) and “Team” (2014) were #1 songs at both formats. Will “Green” speed its way to the top?

NOAH KAHAN – “Young Blood” (Republic, March 13 – Triple A)
Album: TBA
Past AAA History: This is the Vermont native’s debut release, making it his first ever adds date! It’s climbing on my personal chart.

BEA MILLER – “Song Like You” (Hollywood, March 13 / 14 – Hot AC and CHR/Top 40)
Album: Chapter One: Blue (EP) (2017)
Past CHR/HAC History: Miller’s had minor success at the two formats so far. On the CHR list, 2014’s “Young Blood” reached #38.

MISTERWIVES  – “Machine” (Republic, March 14 – Alternative)
Album: Connect The Dots (2017)
Past ALT History: “Reflections” and “Our Own House” fizzled below the top 30 at the format, but there’s early action for this tune.

DUA LIPA – “Be The One” (Warner Bros., March 21 – CHR/Top 40)
Album: Dua Lipa (2017)
Past CHR History: “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” was pulled in January, narrowly missing the top 20. We’ll see how this “One” charts.

SAINT MOTEL – “Born Again” (Elektra/Atlantic, March 21 – Alternative)
Album: saintmotelevision (2016)
Past ALT History: “Born” is likely to become the band’s fourth top 40 song at the format. Their biggest, “My Type”, hit #9 in 2015.

Which of these new songs would you like to see on the charts later this year? Let me know!

TURN IT UP TUESDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (February 24)

Sky high on the charts.

Sky high on the charts.

Last week, the charts were rocking out to a big new sound. Now, it’s back to the urban side of music as the heavyweights come forward and set their sights on #1. Here are the albums and singles that are new in stores for the week of February 24:

  • Rapper Big Sean hasn’t had an album out since the fall of 2013, but both of his previous sets have only gone as high as #3 on the Billboard 200 survey. That may now change with his latest effort, Dark Sky Paradise, led by a single that got onto three radio formats, the Platinum-selling “I Don’t F–k With You”. That new energy and momentum should help to boost numbers; we’ll see just how much of an effect it has very soon. (iTunes)
  • If you enjoy Chris Brown, Tyga, or a combination of the two performers, you may remember that they worked on a mixtape together several years back. Now, the two are back for an official studio release, Fan Of A Fan – The Album. It features the current Rhythm and Urban top ten single, “Ayo”. Given their respective fanbases, it’s clear that this one is due for a solid first week, probably inside the top five. (iTunes)
  • Still reliving the memories of young love, Kid Rock is back with an album entitled First Kiss. That title also happens to be the name of his latest single, currently top 20 at Active Rock radio and top 40 at Hot AC. Though he doesn’t possess the selling power that he once did, the set should make a solid debut in the top ten, if not higher. (iTunes)
  • Other releases out this week include: All That Remains‘s The Order Of Things (iTunes), Emile Haynie‘s We Fall (iTunes), Falling In Reverse‘s Just Like You (iTunes), Mat Kearney‘s Just Kids (iTunes), MisterWives‘s Our Own House (iTunes), Red‘s of Beauty and Rage (iTunes), The Airborne Toxic Event‘s Dope Machines (iTunes) and the soundtrack to television’s Sons Of Anarchy called Songs Of Anarchy, Volume 4 (iTunes).

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:

  • “Invincible”, the first of five instant grat tracks this week from Kelly Clarkson. (iTunes)
  • “I Want You To Know”, a collaboration from rumored couple Zedd and Selena Gomez. (iTunes)
  • “Nothing Without Love”, a solo single from fun.‘s Nate Ruess. (iTunes)

Next week, former American Idol champ Kelly Clarkson and the comeback kids Modest Mouse will be among the top ten debuts on the Billboard 200. How high can they and newcomers like Rixton go? A full preview is coming in seven!
