Chart Notes:

  • In likely their final week at #1, Coldplay holds onto the top spot for a fourth week on my personal chart with “Higher Power”. It marks the group’s longest run at the summit since 2014, when “A Sky Full Of Stars” also spent four weeks on top. Imagine Dragons claim this week’s Biggest Mover with “Wrecked”, rising from 38-30 in its second week in the countdown. For debuts, we have three of them: trio Walk The Moon is back with their first entry in two years, “Can You Handle My Love??”, landing at #37. Michael Franti & Spearhead look to spread some positivity with “Good Day For A Good Day” at #38. Finally, checking in at #40, is the other debut posing a question this week: “Where Do You Wanna Go?”, the first chart song in 19 years for 98 Degrees. Member Nick Lachey managed to appear on my chart with a handful of solo entries through 2009, but this is the quartet’s first time on my list since “Why (Are We Still Friends)”.

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of June 3, 2016

Holding out for this Hero.

Holding out for this Hero.

No June swoon on the release schedule this week… there are lots of emerging and established acts to keep the hits coming. Score! Here are all the notable new albums and singles:

  • MAREN MORRIS — Hero (iTunes)
    • Morris is one of the brightest new stars on the Country scene. Both her sales and streaming data is pretty impressive, and that’ll hopefully translate into a nice first week with her first major-label set. Lead single “My Church”, which has weathered some polarizing callout scores, is still in the top ten at the format. We’ll see if a top five debut is in reach in a few days.
  • TEGAN AND SARA — Love You To Death (iTunes)
    • The two Quin sisters had a very strong pop album in 2013 with Heartthrob, which gave them a U.S. hit with “Closer”. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with “Boyfriend”, which is already a radio hit in their native Canada, and going for Hot AC adds on Monday. I’m looking forward to hearing the other gems on their latest effort.
  • DAN + SHAY — Obsessed (iTunes)
    • The duo of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney is slowly making its way up the Country airplay list with “From The Ground Up”, which is selling very well. Their second album is looking to repeat the top ten debut of their 2014 set, which gave them one Gold and one Platinum single.
  • VOLBEAT — Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie (iTunes)
    • The Danish metal group is on top of the Active Rock chart with “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown”, their fifth #1 there. The last album by the band, released in 2013, entered in the top ten on the Billboard 200 chart. Can they seal the deal for a second time?
  • PAUL SIMON — Stranger To Stranger (iTunes)
    • It’s solo album #13 for the legendary singer/songwriter, another likely top ten record for him. On the Triple A listing, “Wristband” remains in the top 20
  • More albums out this week: Craig Morgan‘s A Whole Lot More To Me (iTunes), Ladyhawke‘s Wild Things (iTunes), Max Jury‘s Max Jury (iTunes), Michael Franti & Spearhead‘s Soulrocker (iTunes), The Kills‘s Ash & Ice (iTunes), Train‘s Does Led Zeppelin 2 (iTunes), Me Before You (Soundtrack) (iTunes), Waitress (Original Cast Recording) (iTunes)
  • More EPs out this week: Alexander Jean‘s Head High (iTunes), The Strokes‘s Future Present Past (iTunes)

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:

  • “All We Ever Knew”, The Head And The Heart (iTunes)
  • “Because I Love You”, Montaigne (iTunes)
  • “Good Girls”, Elle King (iTunes)

TURN IT UP TUESDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (July 30)

Layin' it on Thicke.

Layin’ it on Thicke.

Get ready to take your seat on the soulacoaster because it’s taking you on a smooth ride through the week’s music releases for Tuesday, July 30:

  • His album sales were dropping fast and his singles weren’t gaining nearly as much airplay as in years past… it looked as though Robin Thicke was on his way out, until a little song called “Blurred Lines” gave him his first #1 single ever. Now, parent album Blurred Lines is in stores today and expected to be next week’s top-selling album. How high will the numbers be? Based on how enormously well the single is doing, it may just be his biggest week yet. (iTunes)
  • Featuring the pop hit “Chloe (You’re The One I Want)”, X Factor’s season 2 bad boy trio Emblem3 makes their debut with Nothing To Lose. It will very likely do better than season 2 winner Tate Stevens‘s debut album of a few months ago. (Did I hear a “he had an album out?”) (iTunes)
  • On the topic of boy bands, the Backstreet Boys are back (alright!) with In A World Like This, with the title track being the current radio single from it. This is no Millenium, but you know their core fans will like it. (iTunes)
  • With their first album in three years, Michael Franti & Spearhead return with All People, featuring the single “I’m Alive (Life Sounds Like)”. (iTunes)
  • Legendary blues guitarist Buddy Guy is out with Rhythm & Blues. He released his first album way back in 1965 with the Junior Wells Band. (iTunes)
  • Other albums out this week include Moore Is More by Chanté Moore (iTunes) and Bakersfield by Vince Gill and Paul Franklin (iTunes).

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:

  • “Bonfire Heart”, the first single from James Blunt‘s forthcoming album Moon Landing. (iTunes)
  • “Can’t Believe It”, a collaboration between rappers Flo Rida and Pitbull. (iTunes)
  • “Turn The Night Up”, a new single from Latin singer Enrique Iglesias. (iTunes)

In a light release week for the first week of August, duo The Civil Wars may battle for the #1 spot with their self-titled album, or current “Don’t Ya” hitmaker Brett Eldredge could crank that Country sound to the top. We’ll see! A preview is coming in seven.
