NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of April 28, 2017

There’s something about Mary…

When the Queen Of Hip-Hop Soul faces off against other chart royalty in the battle for the week’s highest debut, you know it is going to be a good fight. Get your downloads and streams ready, because here comes the latest new releases update:

MARY J. BLIGE – Strength Of A Woman (iTunes)
Blige should show some notable Strength in the marketplace with her latest studio album, which comes after a pair of #1 songs at the Urban AC format: “Thick Of It” and “U + Me (Love Lesson)”. It also includes “Love Yourself”, featuring Kanye West, which is on its way up the Urban chart. A dozen of her previous studio albums, dating back to 1992, have hit the top ten on the Billboard 200, and a top five debut is certainly possible for her latest effort.

WALE – Shine (iTunes)
Pushed up a week from its initial release date, perhaps due to a battle brewing between new sets from Chris Stapleton and Logic, this popular rapper’s fifth studio album is his first in two years. The lead single from it, “Fashion Week” (featuring G-Eazy), ranks in the top 30 at Urban radio, and sits just outside the top 40 at the Rhythmic format. The album will likely debut in the top five.

GORILLAZ – Humanz (iTunes)
The animated band is back with their first album in six years. Single “We Got The Power”, featuring Jehnny Beth, quickly reached its top 40 peak on the Alternative chart, though it’s not so powerful now, as it tumbles down the survey. Will this release return them to the top ten for the first time since 2010? We’ll see soon.

CASHMERE CAT – 9 (iTunes)
He’s one cool Cat. This album features collaborations with a number of popular acts, including Ariana Grande and The Weeknd. One single from it, the Selena Gomez and Tory Lanez-assisted “Trust Nobody”, received some minor pop airplay last year.

More albums out this week: All That Remains‘s Madness (iTunes), Feist‘s Pleasure (iTunes), John Mellencamp‘s Sad Clowns & Hillbillies (iTunes), Lea Michele‘s Places (iTunes), New Found Glory‘s Makes Me Sick (iTunes), Old Crow Medicine Show‘s 50 Years Of Blonde On Blonde (iTunes), Sylvan Esso‘s What Now (iTunes), The Cranberries‘s Something Else (iTunes), Trombone Shorty‘s Parking Lot Symphony (iTunes), Willie Nelson‘s God’s Problem Child (iTunes)

TURN IT UP TUESDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (December 2)

This album looks HU/GE.

This album looks HU/GE.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… to Rock out, of course. I hope Santa has a few extra guitars and amplifiers on the sleigh for all the good little boys and girls. Here’s what albums and singles are in stores for the week of December 2:

  • In 2008, those Aussie legends AC/DC debuted atop the album chart with a huge total for Black Ice, their first set to do so with Columbia Records. Their latest studio album for the label is Rock Or Bust, which may also hit the #1 spot (with a smaller total than their comeback from six years ago, of course.) For a band that’s been recording for nearly four decades with many a classic tune, that is pretty rockin’. Single “Play Ball” is still top ten on Active Rock radio. (iTunes)
  • An album leak over a month ago isn’t stopping R&B star Mary J. Blige from carrying on with the promotion of her latest set, The London Sessions. As the title says, it was recorded in England this past summer. Multiple singles have been serviced to radio from it: there is “Right Now” at CHR, “Therapy” at Hot AC and “Whole Damn Year” at Urban and Urban AC. Given her track record on the Billboard 200, a top ten debut is likely again. (iTunes)
  • My favorite release of the week, as you probably know, is from the Ohio group Walk The Moon. They have a hot album in stores with Talking Is Hard. It features the single “Shut Up And Dance”, which just reached the top spot on my personal chart and continues to build nicely at Alternative radio. Sale pricing has been huge with this one; where it lands is anyone’s guess. (iTunes)
  • Other releases out this week include: Avicii‘s The Days/Nights (EP) (iTunes), She & Him‘s Classics (iTunes), Sundy Best‘s Salvation City (iTunes), Willie and Bobbie Nelson‘s Willie’s Stash, Vol. 1: December Day (iTunes) and Wu-Tang Clan‘s A Better Tomorrow (iTunes).

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:

  • “Bed On Fire”, a new pre-release single from Butch Walker. (iTunes)
  • “Breaking Up”, the latest digital single from Charli XCX. (iTunes)
  • “Right Where You Are”, new from the pop duo Jack & Jack. (iTunes)
  • “Spark The Fire”, the followup to “Baby Don’t Lie” for singer Gwen Stefani. (iTunes)
  • “Tunnels”, a pre-release single from Angels & Airwaves. (iTunes)

A greatest hits compilation from Country star Carrie Underwood and a studio album from R&B singer K. Michelle top next week’s release schedule, but can they compete with the top-selling Q4 favorites like Pentatonix and Taylor Swift? Those releases and more are coming on Monday night.

TURN IT UP TUESDAY: What’s New In Stores This Week (October 15)

The Bolt and the Beautiful.

The Bolt and the Beautiful.

Get jelly of this release schedule because we’re about to Jam out in the middle of Q4. Here are all the albums and singles you need to know about for the week of October 15:

  • With the tenth studio album in their illustrious career, Eddie Vedder and his band, Pearl Jam, are out with the highly-anticipated Lightning Bolt. The album features the Alternative hits “Mind Your Manners” and “Sirens”. Look for this to be a potential contender for #1 next week. (iTunes)
  • From The Beatles to Wings and his own solo projects, Paul McCartney‘s been making music for over 50 years now. His latest album is New, with the title track recently garnering some Adult Contemporary airplay. It’ll attract a good crowd, probably aiming for a top 5 debut on the album chart if not higher. (iTunes)
  • Singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw attempts to Make A Move with his fifth album, featuring lead single “Best I Ever Had”. Reaction’s been mixed on this one, but a top ten entry seems like it could happen. (iTunes) (Read my review!)
  • Just ahead of the premiere of the VH1’s CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, TLC is out with a greatest hits effort, TLC 20, featuring a new single “Meant To Be” along with all the hits you know and love. (iTunes)
  • Fall Out Boy is following their album of earlier this year, Save Rock And Roll, with a new EP titled Pax Am Days. The 8-track effort was co-produced with Ryan Adams. (iTunes)
  • Two big acts from the airwaves of Adult Alternative radio are stringing together some sensational albums this week. Take a listen to Magpie And The Dandelion by The Avett Brothers (iTunes) and Let’s Be Still by The Head And The Heart, the latter performing at CMJ this week (iTunes).
  • In the world of Country music, check out former American Idol winner Scotty McCreery‘s second album See You Tonight (iTunes), singer-songwriter Will Hoge‘s Never Give In (iTunes) and the legend himself, Willie Nelson‘s To All The Girls… (iTunes). McCreery is the only one with a single in the Country top 40 at the moment, the title track, although his first week sales will be significantly lower than with his first album.
  • …and in the Christmas music report, one of the potentially bigger albums of the season is released this week. It’s R&B singer Mary J. Blige‘s A Mary Christmas (iTunes). Sorry, no odes to crispy chicken wraps on this one.
  • Other albums out this week include Anberlin‘s Devotion (iTunes), Basic Vacation‘s self-titled EP (iTunes), Diane Birch‘s Speak A Little Louder (iTunes), Glenn Lewis‘s Moment Of Truth (iTunes) and Toad The Wet Sprocket‘s New Constellation (iTunes).

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:

  • “All That Matters”, another Music Mondays track from Justin Bieber. (iTunes)
  • “Let Me Go”, a duet between Avril Lavigne and Nickelback‘s Chad Kroeger from Lavigne’s forthcoming self-titled album. (iTunes) (Lyrics here!)
  • “Rap God”, a digital single from rapper Eminem. (iTunes)
  • “White Christmas”, a classic cover from Kelly Clarkson‘s forthcoming Christmas album, Wrapped In Red. (iTunes)

Next week is all about Katy Perry‘s PRISM! Find out about it and new albums from Andrea Bocelli and Brett Dennen and an EP from Fifth Harmony in seven.
