RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 28, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. For all your Passover pop activity, including more than a few songs passing over others on the survey, here’s a look at what’s moving at the format this week:

END OF THE DRIVE: Chart smash “Driver’s License” from Olivia Rodrigo cruises to a fifth week at the top of the pop chart. In the next few days, it will likely relinquish the chart crown to Billie Eilish, whose “Therefore I Am” is still gaining as it holds at #2.

Another week, another Justin Bieber debut. His 35th top 40 hit is “Peaches”, which scores a sweet start at #29. The track features Daniel Caesar and Givēon, who both score their first top 40 single to date at the format. Ariana Grande‘s “POV” is next at #34, which becomes her 25th top 40 hit at the format. Her new single was last Tuesday’s Most Added song at the format, while “Peaches” secured a second place finish. Format newcomers Lil Tjay and 6LACK are dialing up a hit in “Calling My Phone”, soaring from 43-37 this week. The collaboration is still rising quickly through the top 20 on both the Rhythmic and Urban lists, where both acts have charted previously. Up next, “Sunshine (The Light)” shines on the chart, up from 41-39 for Fat Joe, DJ Khaled and Amorphous. This marks the fifth top 40 hit and first in 16 years for Fat Joe, the 11th for DJ Khaled and the first for Amorphous. Finally, Duncan Laurence appears on the Top 40 radio chart with his first entry, “Arcade”, which debuts at #40. In 2019, it took the top prize at the Eurovision Song Contest and is now the first winning title from the competition to hit the this list since 1976’s “Save Your Kisses For Me” by Brotherhood Of Man, which reached #36 on the CHR survey in Radio & Records that June.

In the top 50, the aforementioned Givēon comes in at #45 with his own “Heartbreak Anniversary”. The track is also approaching the top 40 at the Rhythmic and Urban radio formats. At #47, Ashe and Finneas enter with the duet “Till Forever Falls Apart”. Finneas has written and/or produced a number of chart titles, including those for his sister Billie Eilish, but has never ranked in the top 50 as an artist. The viral hit “Telepatía” by newcomer Kali Uchis aparece en la lista de radio en #49 (or appears on the list at #49.) We have one final song in the #50 spot, coming from NF and the title cut from his recent mixtape Clouds. The set is expected to place in the top five on next week’s Billboard 200 update.

“DOOR” GOES FOR MORE: “Leave The Door Open” checks into the hit hotel for another week, as Silk Sonic (featuring Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak) leads the Top 40 adds report with 35 new stations in its second week. All three songs are well into the top 30 at the format.

Breaking out in the top ten, Tones And I came in fifth place with 21 stations on impact for “Fly Away”, while Justin Bieber held onto ninth place with “Hold On”, securing 17 more adds this week.

Charting singles from AJR, Daya and JESSIA returned to the top ten on the adds report this week.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (March 14, 2021)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. As we wait and see who will be taking home some GRAMMY statues tonight, here’s a look at what’s popping at the format this week:

LICENSE RENEWAL: For the third week in a row, Olivia Rodrigo remains at the top spot on the pop radio chart with “Driver’s License”. While still in positive territory, the big hit was up a mere 45 spins vs. last week. That being said, it’s more than 2,600 spins ahead of the song at #2, so it’ll still be hanging around at the top for a fourth week next Sunday.

The new duo of Silk Sonic scores this week’s top entry in the top 40 with “Leave The Door Open”, making a giant move from 43-25 on the list. Their first charting title also marks the 22nd and first entries in the region individually for Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, respectively. Climbing from 41-38, G-Eazy and Chris Brown provide the top 40 with a new hit called, well, “Provide”. This is the 11th time in the top 40 for G-Eazy and the 36th for Brown. Jessia is also rising on the pop list with “I’m Not Pretty”. The track takes a nice jump from 44-39 this week, marking her first trip into the region.

In the top 50, Bebe Rexha leads a set of four debuts at #44 with “Sacrifice”, followed by Justin Bieber and “Hold On” at #45. His forthcoming album Justice is due on Friday. The recent viral hit “Calling My Phone” starts at #47 for Lil Tjay and 6LACK, which is flying through the top 20 on the Rhythmic radio chart and approaching the region on the Urban survey. Lastly, “Watchu Tryna Do?” puts chart newcomer GiGi Vega in the #50 spot this week.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (March 9, 2021)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Maroon 5 and Megan Thee Stallion keep the adds report looking very beautiful. Let’s add ’em up:

MAROONED AT THE TOP: With 145 stations on impact, Maroon 5 and Megan Thee Stallion earn the week’s Most Added track at the Top 40 format with “Beautiful Mistakes”, a song that has already entered the top 30 as of last weekend. The song also scored 72 adds at the Hot AC format yesterday, more than enough to lead that report too. Look for it to continue to grow into the spring.

The new duo Silk Sonic, comprised of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, finishes in second place with 129 stations for “Leave The Door Open”. The tune also took the runner-up spot at the Hot AC and Rhythmic formats with 48 and 44 adds, respectively. At R&B (f/k/a Urban AC) radio, it paced well ahead of the competition with 53 adds on impact and a Most Added win.

Bebe Rexha also had a pretty good day with “Sacrifice”, earning 44 adds on impact and a third place finish. It’s the follow-up to a recent top 20 entry at the format, the Doja Cat-assisted “Baby, I’m Jealous”, which got as high as #19 in December.

Charting singles from Cardi B, Daya and Glass Animals returned to the top ten on the adds report this week.

Taking flight on next week’s adds report: the impacting “Fly Away” by Tones And I, among other titles.

MOST ADDED — THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN
1. MAROON 5 featuring MEGAN THEE STALLION, “Beautiful Mistakes” (222/Interscope)
