ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (October 2, 2018)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Shawn Mendes and Zedd go on a worldly adventure together, but their flight is full of passengers like Twenty One Pilots and Why Don’t We. Who safely lands at the top? Let’s add ’em up:

BIG IN “JAPAN”: “Lost In Japan” is not lost on a large number of pop programmers this week, as the new single by Mendes and its new remix by Zedd easily leads this week’s adds report at the Top 40 format. Eclipsing the triple-digit mark at 113 stations, it’s a leader on two lists this week, as the single also led the Hot AC report yesterday with a total of 22 stations. “Lost” had a strong entry at #37 on Sunday’s official update, thanks in part to hourly airplay at iHeartMedia outlets last Thursday upon the remix’s debut. At this point, it looks like the song will have some good upward movement at both formats by the end of this weekend.

The numbers drop off significantly from there, though it’s a solid week for the latest single from Twenty One Pilots, who fly onto the Top 40 report with “My Blood”, which is already well into the top ten on the Alternative survey. The track comes in with a third place finish, landing at 30 stations. Two years ago, the duo scored with a string of three big hits that all reached #1 or #2: “Stressed Out” (#1 for two weeks), “Ride” (#1 for one week) and the Suicide Squad cut “Heathens” (#2 for three weeks).

Get ready for a massive session next week with at least six impacting titles, including new tunes by Alessia Cara, DrakeHalsey and Khalid, among others.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (September 30, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Blood is oozing from the top spot, but you’ll find that it’s actually a good thing for once. Here’s what’s popping this Sunday:

YOUNG AT CHART: Soaring from 4-1 in its 17th week in the top 40, “Youngblood” by 5 Seconds Of Summer becomes the new #1 song in the land on the Top 40 chart. It’s a major win for the Australian band, who have been charting since 2014 with a string of six prior top 40 singles that haven’t gone any higher than #13. However, that changes with their lucky seventh top 40 entry. Now, as much as that stat is impressive, the British band Coldplay waited until their 12th chart single to both reach the top ten and go to #1 with 2017’s “Something Just Like This”, a collaboration with The Chainsmokers. The four men of 5 Seconds Of Summer will have to hatch a plan to secure their next chart-topper here, as well as a route to #1 on the Hot AC list with “Youngblood”, currently at #8.

MEN-DES AT WORK: The pop island is full of new music this week, and two Island labelmates have this week’s top 40 entries on the Top 40 survey. Moving from 41-36, “Song About You” becomes Mike Posner‘s fifth single to reach the region. It also enters the top 40 on the Hot AC chart this week, rising 45-35. Posner’s upcoming album is due in January. One spot lower, and on the strength of hourly airplay from iHeartMedia outlets this past Thursday, a remix of Shawn Mendes‘s “Lost In Japan” (mixed by Zedd) hops into the countdown at #37. The tune is Mendes’s seventh top 40 release on the Top 40 chart and Zedd’s 13th. The original version of “Lost” can be found on Mendes’s self-titled album, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 list earlier this year.

Five potential future hits break into the top 50 this week, with a large number of newcomers in the mix. Entering at #46, the highest of the five new ones includes an established pop act and an established country artist, the latter of whom is new to this format. “This Feeling” pairs The Chainsmokers with Kelsea Ballerini, the follow-up to the duo’s Emily Warren-assisted hit “Side Effects”. For the two men, it’s likely to become their tenth top 40 song here next month. At #47, “I Love It” pairs Kanye West with Lil Pump, a collaboration that’s now well into the top 20 on the Rhythmic chart and also top 30 on the Urban chart. The two guys performed the hit on Saturday Night Live this weekend in water bottle outfits. Did it quench your thirst? Let me know below. “Be Alright” heads to #48 this week for Dean Lewis, which recently topped the national chart in his native Australia. This debut marks Lewis’s first song to enter the Top 40 chart. “Be” can also be found at #20 on the current Hot AC update. Lastly, we end on another pair of newcomers at #49 and #50, as AJ Mitchell‘s “Girls” and Nina Nesbitt‘s “Loyal To Me” start their Top 40 journey. Look for all five releases on the adds report this coming Tuesday, as they compete against new hits by Twenty One Pilots, Why Don’t We and, as mentioned above, Shawn Mendes and Zedd, as well as The Chainsmokers and Kelsea Ballerini.

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of October 6, 2017

Music is our religion.

Say a few pop prayers for our contenders this week, as they all compete for the top debut on next week’s Billboard 200. Here are the albums and singles you need to know:

NF – Perception (iTunes)
The Contemporary Christian hip-hop artist is poised to score his highest-charting album to date with his latest effort, as he looks to score his first crossover hit with “Let You Down”, impacting at CHR/Top 40 radio on Halloween. The album includes the song “10 Feet Down”, featuring PGTC favorite Ruelle, the only collaboration in the mix. Just how high will it go? Stay tuned.

AUGUST BURNS RED – Phantom Anthem (iTunes)
From Pennsylvania, this heavy metal quintet has gone as high as #9 on the Billboard 200 with their last two studio albums, both of them topping the Independent Albums chart. Like NF, they also have a Christian fanbase driving their sales numbers. It could rise above that #9 high mark, assuming streaming numbers are solid for it.
