RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (January 27, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. We’re finishing off the month of January on a strong note with yet another week of pop power, including a new #1 song and several exciting debuts. Let’s see what’s popping this Sunday:

MEET “ME” AT THE TOP: After leading the top 40 for a week, Ariana Grande‘s “thank u, next” is bounced out of the top spot, replaced by Halsey‘s “Without Me”, which advances from 3-1. It’s her third #1 single at the Top 40 format, following collaborations with The Chainsmokers (“Closer”, ten weeks in 2016) and G-Eazy (“Him & I”, two weeks in 2018). Next month, the performer is due to appear as the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. She’s also writing and recording her third studio album.

Entering the top 40 this week, LIVVIA‘s “Damn” rises from 44-39 to become her second top 40 hit at the format, while “Zeze” is up from 44-40 to land Kodak Black his second top 40 release as well. The two featured artists on the song, Travis Scott and Offset, earn their fifth and third solo top 40 entries at the format, respectfully. “Zeze” remains atop the Urban chart and recently led the list at Rhythmic radio.

This week’s top 50 debut action gives us four new hits in the region, with Calvin Harris and Rag’N’Bone Man‘s “Giant” ahead of the pack at #46. The collaboration is now in the top five in the U.K. and has landed in the top 40 across Europe. “Bad Liar” comes in at #47 for Imagine Dragons, which also soars into the top 50 on the Alternative chart. It’s the band’s follow-up to “Natural”, a #11 entry at the Top 40 format last year that topped the Alternative survey for nine weeks. Dua Lipa‘s soundtrack cut “Swan Song” gets into the action at #49 on the list and will be sure to move up significantly following its impact date this Tuesday. Lastly, at #50, it’s a new song for NF, who topped the chart last year for a week with “Let You Down”. His third and latest single is “If You Want Love”, a cut from his chart-topping 2017 album Perception.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (December 23, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. This is the first of two holiday freeze reports and we’re certainly feeling the chill. Luckily, there are still a few tunes to cover ahead of Christmas. Here’s what’s popping this week:

WHAT YULE EXPECT THIS WEEK: You could say that Panic! At The Disco has a strong ho-ho-hold on the Alternative, Hot AC and Top 40 lists for a third week in a row with their crossover smash “High Hopes”, which Santa might be bopping to as he takes his sleigh around the world in a few days. With little action on any of the radio charts this week, here are a few of the entries towards the bottom of the survey that could be making some larger moves in the new year:

Up two notches to #39, after becoming a solid radio hit in Canada earlier this year, “Ain’t Easy” from Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine becomes the first top 40 entry for the duo here in the States. Their follow-up song, “Better Off”, is still charting at several formats up north, while their new seasonal release, “It’s Me & You (This Christmas)”, is also picking up airplay.

One other title heads into the top 40 this week: “1999” by Charli XCX and Troye Sivan, up from 43-40 to become the fifth top 40 single for the former and fourth for the latter. Though Sivan’s hit “My My My!” reached #21 in March, Charli XCX hasn’t entered the top 40 here in nearly four years, last ranking with “Break The Rules” in January 2015. After a couple of near misses in 2015’s “Doing It” and 2016’s “After The Afterparty”, which got to #43 and #41, respectively, it looks like she might be back on track with this single and its viral music video from a few months ago.

For top 50 entries, you’ll find only one this week: “Zeze”, coming in at #49 for Kodak Black featuring Travis Scott and Offset. At this point next week, it’s likely be at #1 on Rhythmic chart, though it ranks at #2 on the latest update. The collaboration is also in the top ten on the Urban radio list. Due to high streaming numbers, “Zeze” also recently peaked at #2 on the Hot 100.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from PGTC!

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of December 14, 2018

A web of new music.

‘Tis the season for some jolly gifts from the musical gods, including several notable rap albums and the big soundtrack to one of this weekend’s hottest films. Here are all the albums and singles hitting the market this Friday:

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of March 31, 2017

Black is back.

We’ve made it through a quarter of the year, and the hits just keep on coming in this week’s report. Let’s check out all the action right here:

KODAK BLACK – Painting Pictures (iTunes)
The 19-year-old Florida performer is riding the success of the viral hit “Tunnel Vision” with his debut album, which follows his set of mixtapes over the last few years. The song just impacted at Urban radio, and should be charting rather soon. With a healthy amount of sale and stream equivalent units being added to its total, it should have a large debut on the album survey next week.

TRACE ADKINS – Something’s Going On (iTunes)
This is the fifteenth studio album for the Country star, who made his debut in 1996 and topped the chart with tracks like “(This Ain’t) No Thinkin’ Thing” and “You’re Gonna Miss This”. His current album features the song “Watered Down”, which is in the lower rungs of the survey. Look for it somewhere in the top 40.

LA’PORSHA RENAE – Already All Ready (iTunes)
Former American Idol runner-up Renae is out with her debut album, which features the top ten Urban AC hit “Good Woman”. It’s at #9 currently. Though the buzz from the show is largely gone, there should still be some interest in the release.
