We’ll get an answer to that important question soon.

PROFILE: New Hollow “Ain’t” Strangers On Satellite Radio

"You" ain't seen nothin' yet.

“You” ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

The occasional song comes around that satellite radio seems to get on before anybody else. In this case, I’ve been hearing a “new” song recently over the past week on SiriusXM’s The Pulse station. In reality, the single is almost a year old, first put up on YouTube in late July of 2012, but I think it has a lot of potential to do well nationally if the right cards are played. The three teens behind the song call themselves New Hollow and the track that they’re promoting is “She Ain’t You”.

The trio that is New Hollow consists of three high school friends who have been together since 2010: Evan West (18; vocals/guitar), Mick Clouse (18; vocals/guitar) and Chad Blashford (17; back-up vocals/drums). Together, they formed a band as they resided in New Albany, Ohio. With a population of just under 7,800, they were definitely living the small town life. That same year, they signed a deal with Justice, a popular girls’ clothing store in the U.S., and began to release a string of physical singles to the retailer while also performing on a mall tour sponsored by it. All three, “SiCK”, “Boyfriend” and a cover of the B.o.B./Hayley Williams hit, “Airplanes”, went to #1 on Billboard’s Hot Singles Sales Chart, which measures both physical sales and download packages. “Boyfriend” went onto top the year-end chart for 2011. The items are no longer available for purchase at this point, but just last month, the group began releasing some songs iTunes, including the aforementioned “She”, as well as as “Dear Edgar” and “Don’t Hurt No More”.

Now, this is pretty good for any group to achieve, but impressively, they’ve done this all independently. Take a look at the label they’re on: Monkee Hollow/614 Music Group. That’s the previous name of the band and the area code they come from. No big record group here pushing their material, although, I’m sure they’d take the right offer if it came by. The guys can only do so much as an unsigned act without the extra support that comes with increased airplay and larger promotional appearances, etc. It would take them from a small regional act into the national landscape. That help may still be a little ways away, but there’s at least one item of good news for the band.

Despite the song’s age and the limited exposure the trio’s had so far to a tweenage audience, I mentioned that SiriusXM’s The Pulse radio station (channel 15) added the song last week and is playing the song 3-4 times a day. I’ve heard it twice so far and it sounds pretty good on the air. There’s not a lot of moody-sounding material out there right now, so it’ll be put to good use if the musical landscape turns the tide soon. However, I should point out that the program director there occasionally picks out songs to put into rotation that doesn’t necessarily breakout on FM radio. Ever heard of Katie Herzig‘s “Best Day Of Your Life”? What about “Mensch” by Herbert Groenemeyer and Bono? If you keep tabs on The Pulse, you may have heard them once or twice, but as far as the charts are concerned, you’re probably scratching your head. (Except for maybe on who Bono is. Plus, PD Jim Ryan is pretty nice.) Still, they’re young and aren’t a bubblegum boy band, so they may have a chance to finally take on some bigger opportunities.

With a social following of nearly 30,000 followers combined between Facebook and Twitter, the group’s established a decent-sized fan base. They’re continuing to play small venues throughout the summer, including county and state fairs in and around the Ohio area. While only satellite radio has played a factor in their airplay so far, the group continues to promote their music at terrestrial radio in the Midwest, so we’ll see if anything comes of it. I’m hoping something can happen to them. Luckily, these guys aren’t hollow at all and neither is their music, and with some patience and planning, New Hollow can bridge the gap between their current fans and the ones to come in the near future.
