RECORD REWIND 2019: PGTC Picks, Week Four

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

PICK OF THE WEEK: ONE
ASHLEY TISDALE – “Love Me & Let Me Go” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Second appearance

Former Disney star Tisdale last appeared on the report in November when her original track “Voices In My Head” was released to a fairly good reception. Her follow-up song, though not as successful commercially, is a nice electronic pop addition to her collection.

PICK OF THE WEEK: TWO
FRANKIE – “Lost In Translation” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Third appearance

Just ahead of her forthcoming EP STA7GES, due next month, this performer has another great pop sound on her hands. Other cuts on the set include “When I’m Ready” and “You Decided”, both of which landed on the report last fall. Translation: prepare for bops!

PICK OF THE WEEK: THREE
LAUV & TROYE SIVAN – “I’m So Tired…” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: 14th appearance (Sivan is signed to Capitol Records)

Lauv is definitely in a collaborative mood lately, as the Julia Michaels-assisted “There’s No Way” continues to gain on the pop radio chart, while his release with Sivan makes its debut this week. The short but sweet sound is catchy and the boys sound nice together.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
BRAD O’NEILL featuring JAMES ESSEX – “Wild One”
GIRL WILDE – “Fake Louis”
PETER MANOS – “You Don’t Know Me”
SAARLOOS – “Fire Is Love”
SPAZZ CARDIGAN – “S.O.S.”
THE BAND CAMINO – “Something To Hold On To”

UNSECRET featuring SAM TINNESZ – “Here Come The Warriors”

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, November 11-17, 2018

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

BETTY WHO – “Between You And Me” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fifth appearance
Notes: Always great to have the latest track from Who in the mix! The acoustic-heavy pop sound and subtle arrangement work well.

_____

FRANKIE – “You Decided” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Second appearance
Notes: With the follow-up to “When I’m Ready”, this artist’s second independent release after a period with RCA is a solid pop gem.

_____

HANNAH JANE LEWIS – “Do It Without You” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Third appearance
Notes: First included in 2016, then signed to Polydor and now back in the independent spotlight, Lewis keeps the pop bops coming.

_____

MAGDALENA BAY – “Ghost” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fifth appearance
Notes: Back on the Rewind for the first time since January, the duo’s sweet synth-pop sound and 80’s influence is as strong as ever.

_____

MAX STYLER & THE GRISWOLDS – “Light Me Up” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: First appearance for both acts
Notes: The U.S. meets Australia in this worldly dance collaboration, a nice addition to the latter group’s reinvented sound as of late.

_____

PHIL GOOD – “Put It All On Me” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Second appearance
Notes: Good’s latest tracks are all good with me, as “Be Somebody” and now “Put” showcase an amazing side of the singer’s catalog.

_____

SPAZZ CARDIGAN – “DOIDOIT” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: Fifth appearance
Notes: Emerging as one of Nashville’s most promising new artists, Cardigan’s current track is quirky, catchy and one of his best yet.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
AARON TAOS – “Control”
FLY BY MIDNIGHT – “Heart”
GIRL WILDE – “Nervous Breakdown”
JOE JANIAK – “Heaven Knows”
JULIA KNIGHT – “Cool For You”

RADIO REPORT: POP! Goes The Picks (June 2016)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist during the month. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here’s a selection of new singles being serviced in June in this month’s Radio Report:

Tegan And Sara
TEGAN AND SARA – “Boyfriend” (June 6) (Hot AC)
Label: Warner Bros.
Already in the top 20 on my personal chart is this great song by the Canadian sisters, a single that’s already a radio hit up north. It’s going to be awesome to hear their album Love You To Death later today. “Boyfriend” packs a pop punch that may be more suitable for a CHR/Top 40 station, but there should definitely be some Hot AC interest come Monday. Check out their U.S. tour in the fall.

The Wind + The Wave
THE WIND + THE WAVE – “Grand Canyon” (June 6) (Triple A)
Label: Island/Republic
Dwight Baker and Patricia Lynn put out From The Wreckage two years ago and Covers One last year, both of which contained sync and streaming hits. Unfortunately, radio wasn’t on their side: “With Your Two Hands” couldn’t get out of the 30’s at the format. As their latest album brings them to a new label, can the team deliver them a single that sticks at stations this summer? We’ll see soon.

FRANKIE
FRANKIE – “New Obsession” (June 7) (CHR/Top 40)
Label: Gold’n Retriever/RCA
Frankie Miller and her Oakland boys are ready to bring that “New” sound to pop radio this month as the first release from the RCA imprint Gold’n Retriever, founded a year ago by EVP/GM Joe Riccitelli. The single (and debut EP Dreamstate) was first issued last year by the Nashville label South By Sea, which has placed a handful of indie pop and rock artists high on the Hype Machine charts.

Shawn Mendes
SHAWN MENDES – “Treat You Better” (June 7) (CHR/Top 40)
Label: Hollywood/Republic
Hot teen star Mendes is in the middle of recording his second full-length album with producer Jake Gosling, which will likely see its release later this year. It took some time to break the singer at pop radio: the third single from his last set, “Stitches”, climbed to #1 in its 23rd week in the top 40, one of the top ten longest runs ever to chart’s summit. Let’s hope this new single peaks more quickly.

Switchfoot
SWITCHFOOT – “Float” (June 7 / June 20) (Alternative / Triple A)
Label: Vanguard
After three albums with Atlantic Records, this California band made the switch to Vanguard for their tenth studio album. The set is titled Where The Light Shines Through, and “Float” keeps it a funky affair for the mainstream outlets. The group has a dozen chart singles at Alternative, all of them hitting between 2003 and 2014. Can a lucky 13th give the act their first top ten here in five years?

Elle King
ELLE KING – “Good Girls” (June 13) (Triple A)
Label: RCA
King had a big breakout moment last year when her “Ex’s & Oh’s” got a second life at Triple A radio, eventually crossing to multiple formats and multi-Platinum success. Though “America’s Sweetheart” and “Under The Influence” weren’t able to replicate the same numbers, perhaps radio will have a “Good” time with this single, from the soundtrack to the film Ghostbusters. Who ya gonna call?

LÉON
LÉON – “Tired Of Talking” (June 13) (Hot AC)
Label: Columbia
This new Swedish singer recently made her debut on my personal chart. Her first EP is called Treasure, and that is certainly what it is. “Tired” is looking to awaken the Hot AC airwaves, with streaming services like Spotify leading the way on championing her and a majority of the songs on the EP on its more influential lists. I’ll be rooting for it! A full-length album is due sometime later in 2016.

Beck
BECK – “Wow” (June 14) (Alternative)
Label: Fonograf/Capitol
Reinventing his sound once again, this musician’s latest single seems to find his core fans remembering the Midnite Vultures era. It might be a struggle to get this played on Alternative radio. After all, it has a very poppy influence to it, and opinions may be divided among the gatekeepers at the format. Could this give him his first entry to chart at CHR radio since 1996? It would be quite a story.

Jordan Fisher
JORDAN FISHER – “All About Us” (June 14) (CHR/Top 40)
Label: Hollywood
“All About Us” is the jam. No, seriously, it is. 22-year-old newcomer Fisher has a hot debut single that’s earning him a solid amount of pre-impact airplay at pop radio. On top of the leader list is, unsurprisingly, Radio Disney, but a couple of large markets have it in the mix as well. Though he’s past his Grease: Live image and sound, Fisher and his music should fit right in for the summer season.

RedOne
REDONE featuring ENRIQUE IGLESIAS, R. CITY, SHAGGY and SERAYAH – “Don’t You Need Somebody” (June 14) (CHR/Top 40)
Label: Warner Bros.
Producer Nadir Khayat, better known as RedOne, has helped the careers of many acts on the U.S. charts in the last decade, but the 44-year-old has never had a hit as a main-credited act. Fast forward to 2016, and a few of his friends have joined the party for a cut from his forthcoming album, RedOne Presents. The track has more than three million streams in just under two weeks worldwide.

Dagny
DAGNY – “Backbeat” (June 20) (Hot AC)
Label: Republic
Newcomer Dagny was featured on our 16 For ’16 emerging acts list back in December, and it’s great to see her single finally arriving at radio. The Norwegian performer has a very musical family: mother Marit is a jazz singer, and father Øystein is a guitarist. So far, the “Backbeat” goes on with spins at Alice/KLLC in San Francisco and SiriusXM’s The Pulse. Here’s hoping that it’ll be a fall smash.

COIN
COIN – “Talk Too Much” (June 21) (Alternative)
Label: Columbia
The Nashville quartet got a little Alternative play for their single “Run”, with huge support coming from SiriusXM’s Alt Nation, but the song never became the big hit that it should’ve been. Now, they’re trying again with their new track, which recently hit 800,000 streams on Spotify. That sounds like the start of some sweet success (at least as sweet as the cake on their single cover.) Stay tuned.

Which of these new songs would you like to see atop the charts? Let me know! Comment below or click the “Get Social!” tab above to find PGTC on social media.
