RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, March 4-10, 2018

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite small label and independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

BETTY WHO – “Look Back” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: one previous appearance, “Ignore Me” (January 2018); previously signed to RCA Records
Notes: Yes, I know that there’s a certain irony in featuring a track called “Look Back” on a weekend when the U.S. has sprung ahead one hour. However, just as much as “Ignore Me” was a bop, “Look” is an incredibly catchy and delectable piece of pop. Sweet times!

_____

SPAZZ CARDIGAN – “Episode” (Spotify)
Previously on the Rewind: First time featured
Notes: This performer has fallen onto my radar through some mutual friends in Nashville, not to mention his song’s prominent add on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist. The production on this R&B-flavored track is tight, and a clever lyric definitely doesn’t hurt.

_____

For more great new music, these songs are worth a listen…
FLETCHER – “I Believe You”
WANDERER – “Miss You More At Night”

The winner of Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards in 2012 returns with their third studio album. It’s likely to generate a nice amount of sales and streams during the week. Their 2011 album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, and this one will be aiming for the top.

THE MOWGLI’S — Where’d Your Weekend Go? (iTunes)
The California rockers are back with a new album, featuring the single “Bad Thing”. That song has been streamed over 400,000 times to date. Will this become their first album to break the top 100? Stay tuned!

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 8/21 – 8/27

Record Rewind - August 28, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

CAPE CUB – “All I Need” (iTunes) (Spotify)
It’s amazing to have a new song from Chad Male, who released his Closer EP back in the spring. That set yielded great singles like “Keep Me In Mind” and “Swim”. His return marks a fuller sound and more of a new wave sensibility, one that fits with the singer.

_____

FLETCHER – “Wasted Youth” (iTunes) (Spotify)
She’s a queen of streams, and she’s back where she belongs: on your favorite Spotify New Music Friday playlist. Leaping towards a total of 42 million plays at the service, her latest single is perhaps her best since “War Paint”. It’s certainly not a wasted release.

_____

GOLDEN COAST – “Recess” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Do you ever wish you were back on the swings or the monkey bars, reliving the joy of being young again? The Los Angeles duo of Denny White and Steven Mudd want to take you out of the darkness and onto this pop playground. I hope this slides onto radio.

_____

PHANGS – “Cul De Sac” (iTunes) (Spotify)
From leading the Cardboard Kids to debuting his new solo project, Jake Germany has plenty of sounds to make the rounds. That consistent output provides us with another cool single. His song title might be a dead-end street, but his career is one open road.

_____

ROYAL TONGUES – “Overdose” (iTunes) (Spotify)
The boys from Buffalo, Aaron Bonus and Justin Gammella, are back with their first new release in nearly four months. In May, it was “Oblivion”. Now, sticking with the “O” titles, their prescription for energetic production and indie pop goodness will heal all.

_____

THE NEW COAST – “Slow Down” (iTunes)
We last heard from Nick Blyth and Chris Cheater earlier this year, when “Lost In Your Love” had its debut on blogs and playlists. Their Paraga Beach EP comes out November 4, but given these two great tracks, the other half of the EP should be just as solid.

_____

YOUNG SUMMER – “Fallout” (iTunes) (Spotify)
At this point, you know I’m excited about the upcoming EP from Bobbie Allen. Each cut released so far is different musically, and I can’t wait to hear the full thing. She released this lush ballad earlier this week, soothing with its dulcet tones and pretty melody.

_____

For more new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
KIAH VICTORIA – “Hollow” (SoundCloud)
MYZICA featuring EZRA CAREY – “Drive” (SoundCloud)
TRUITT – “Fallback” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 6/19 – 6/25

Record Rewind - June 26, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. We’ll be testing it out this month, so if you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the world of SoundCloud and my Indie Summer Mix on Spotify, these records stuck out as my favorite independent tunes of the week…

_____

AIRPLANE MAN – “We’re On Fire” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Mystery rules when it comes to this new act, one that virtually appeared out of nowhere on some major Spotify lists over the last few days. However, there’s no need to be alarmed here: there’s a co-pilot on this plane, and the two have flown this route before.

_____

BILLIE EILISH – “Six Feet Under” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Eilish’s “Ocean Eyes” opened up a lot of eyes (and ears) when it took over the blogs and Viral charts earlier this year. So, it’s not a surprise that she’s bound for big numbers again with this pretty pop track. Did I mention that she’s done all this at age 14? Crazy!

_____

CAMERON ERNST – “My Village” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Ernst is a fairly new name for me, though I did like his song “Wild” a few months back. However, with a music catalog dating back to 2010, maybe I’m just late to the party. The sound is familiar, but if you like some Troye Sivan or Years & Years, this is for you.

_____

FLETCHER – “Avalanche” (iTunes) (Spotify)
You know her, you love her, you’ve probably dabbled in painting your face while belting out her big streaming single. (Really, it’s okay. We all do it.) Her new single is headed down the musical mountainside, but can it reach the force of “War Paint”? We’ll see.

_____

LANKS – “Bitter Leaf” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Melbourne musician Will Cuming follows his single “Golden Age” with another golden tune, a soulful electronic song that takes a lot of elements and creates one robust song. There is certainly nothing bitter about the Triple J and playlist love it’s had thus far.

_____

LOSTBOYCROW – “Where It All Goes” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Making his home in Los Angeles, singer Chris Blair has put out plenty of jams in the last 18 months, including “Love Won’t Sleep” and “Thursday”. So, where is he going? To the top, of course. Blair’s knack for a good melody and great production shines again.

_____

OFELIA K – “I Love My Lawyer” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Out of my selections this week, this takes the prize as best title of the bunch. Hey, if Fall Out Boy and Jackson Browne can make it into the top 40 with cuts about the profession, I think we can have another. Any judge would rule that “Lawyer” is a pop windfall.

_____

PETER WISE – “Sweet Solitude” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Brooklyn-based Wise came onto my radar last summer with a song called “On The Ground”, and would you believe that this song is his first original release in nearly a year? Despite the long wait, he doesn’t disappoint, achieving a more intimate lyric and vibe.

_____

STALKING GIA – “Second Nature” (iTunes) (Spotify)
New York singer Tiffany Giardina had some minor success under her given name several years ago, including a charting album in No Average Angel. Since her identity change last year, several of her songs have gained some traction online. Watch out for this.

_____

For more new music, we suggest…
CARDBOARD KIDS – “Social” (Spotify)
CHERRYADE – “Fractured Fairytales” (Spotify)
TRENT DABBS – “Optimists” (Spotify)

16 FOR ’16: New Year, New Acts

Some of the sweet sixteen.

Some of the sweet sixteen for ’16.

After all the endless social media posts about our Spotify mixes and SoundCloud favorites, you’re probably wondering about the top acts in the bunch out of the hundreds of under the radar musicians that we’ve been going through all year. Well, here it is. All year long, we’ve been jamming to the killer tracks released by these great soloists and bands. They have the stats and the support on their side, and it looks like it’ll be a good 2016 for all them. (At least, we’re hoping that it will be.) Here’s the 16 For ’16, a small list of acts we think are due for even bigger success and breakout moments next year:

(Listen to our 16 For ’16 Playlist on Spotify)

A R I Z O N A
A R I Z O N A
Current Location: New Jersey
Most Recent Release: “Where I Wanna Be” (October) (BUY – single)

Recently signed at Atlantic Records, this band named after the Grand Canyon State, but currently based in the Garden State, saw their audience grow off of four ripe single releases. Both their original versions and remixes received love from the blogosphere.

Cape Cub
Cape Cub
Current Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom
Most Recent Release: “Keep Me In Mind” (October) (BUY – single)

Singer Chad Male released two stellar singles this year, “Swim” and the aforementioned “Keep”, both of which hit the blog world and achieved success. The latter tune was featured on Apple Music and BBC Radio 6. Will this Cub become a lion king? I hope so.

CAPPA
CAPPA
Current Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Most Recent Release: “Goddess” (December) (BUY – single)

Nashville’s Carla Cappa has had some huge support from Spotify’s weekly new releases playlist this year, which jump-started her “No Scrubs” interpolation to over 1.8 million streams, her most successful song in 2015. The pop goodness is bound to continue.

Dagny
Dagny
Current Location: Tromsø, Norway
Most Recent Release: “Backbeat” (September) (BUY – single)

She calls herself a “songbird from the north of Norway”, and just like her location, her stats are also headed north. Recently, her outstanding track exceeded 1.6 million streams on Spotify and grabbed some major support from Beats 1 around its launch time.

FLETCHER
FLETCHER
Current Location: New York City, New York
Most Recent Release: “Live Young Die Free” (November) (BUY – “War Paint”)

When your track has 21 million Spotify streams, 7 of which belong to a remix, you know you have a hit on your hands. This is not some “Paint”-by-numbers pop, people. It is a real story. With no label or radio, this independent campaign was a refreshing one.

FRENSHIP
FRENSHIP
Current Location: Los Angeles, California
Most Recent Release: “Knives” [with Matoma] (November) (BUY – single)

This duo returned in 2015 with a series of well-received remixes, an original single titled “Nowhere” and their collaboration with a Norwegian DJ/producer that’s still racking up streams everywhere. Two heads are better than one, and 2016 will be better too.

Lauv
Lauv
Current Location: New York City, New York
Most Recent Release: Lost In The Light EP (September) (BUY – EP)

Summing up Ari Leff’s 2015 as “big” would be an understatement. Four million Spotify streams and a publishing contract later, a lot has been happening for the college kid from New York. Choice cuts from his debut effort include “Reforget” and “The Other”.

Lawrence Taylor
Lawrence Taylor
Current Location: London, United Kingdom
Most Recent Release: Bang Bang EP (November) (BUY – EP)

Taylor’s been posting music online and performing live since 2011, but it was in 2015 that his name really got out there. The buzz is certainly there now thanks to his playlisting across multiple services, syncs, acoustic clips and more. That is a really big “Bang”.

LÉON
LÉON
Current Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Most Recent Release: Treasure EP (December) (BUY – EP)

From the country that’s given us so many amazing pop acts over the last four decades comes another one that’s bound to become a big name in 2016. “Nobody Knows” and “Tired Of Talking” lead the way on this shiny set and what should be a solid full-length.

Lostboycrow
Lostboycrow
Current Location: Los Angeles, California
Most Recent Release: “Love Won’t Sleep” (December) (BUY – single)

Singer/songwriter Chris Blair has seen his star rise from even the beginning of this year, from mid-charting tracks to unanimous blog acclaim. It comes as no surprise that his most recent song is a former #1 on the Hype Machine survey. This bird is gonna fly.

Mackenzie Thoms
Mackenzie Thoms
Current Location: Los Angeles, California
Most Recent Release: “Hostage” (September) (BUY – “Conviction”)

Former American Idol contestant Thoms released “Conviction” for hot Nashville label South x Sea this year, and it soared to the top of the Hype Machine listing a few days later. Look for his forthcoming “Do Me All Again” to, well, do it all over again in 2016.

Maty Noyes
Maty Noyes
Current Location: Los Angeles, California
Most Recent Release: “Stay” [with Kygo] (December) (BUY – single)

Noyes signed with Lava Records in 2014, but now, she has an international hit on her hands with “Stay”, as mentioned above. On her own, she’s uploaded two songs on SoundCloud and has a soundtrack cut. 2016 is sounding nice if everything comes together.

Michael Blume
Michael Blume
Current Location: New York City, New York
Most Recent Release: “Colors” (October) (BUY – single)

Blume’s future R&B sound and loaded lyrics became a favorite on the blog circuit in July when “Manufactured Love” first hit the web, while follow-up “Colors” expanded his musical palette into the Alternative world. It’s aesthetically and musically intriguing.

Ruth B.
Ruth B.
Current Location: Alberta, Canada
Most Recent Release: The Intro EP (November) (BUY – EP)

Signed this year by Columbia Records, this young singer/songwriter’s “Lost Boy” has nearly 20 million streams on Spotify and is still selling several thousand downloads per week. With some early adds detected at the Hot AC format, this might be huge soon.

Secret Weapons
Secret Weapons
Current Location: New York City, New York
Most Recent Release: “Something New” (September) (BUY – single)

This duo’s catchy single was quickly snapped up by Epic Records a few months ago and finds itself north of 1.6 million streams, a total that continues to grow thanks to some Spotify playlisting. Next up for them… zombies? Get ready for another haunting hit.

Young Brother
Young Brother
Current Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Most Recent Release: Kamikaze EP (June) (BUY – EP)

Singer Dalton Diehl released one of my favorite EPs of 2015 with Kamikaze, and now, a remix of the title track is on the move on Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 listing. He has an exciting pop and radio-ready sound, one that definitely needs more love in the new year.
