RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (February 17, 2019)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. It may not be the Daytona 500, but the race for #1 on the pop radio survey is still a very exciting sport to watch. Let’s see what’s popping on the radio this Sunday:

LET’S TALK ABOUT “ME”: This appears to be the fourth and final week at #1 for Halsey‘s “Without Me” on the Top 40 list, but it won’t be long before the performer charges back to the top. Just under “Without”, at #2, is her collaboration with Benny Blanco and Khalid called “Eastside”, which finds a new peak in its 30th week in the top 40. Needless to say, when that cut hits the top next week, it’ll establish a new slowness record for the format, which could be a troubling sign, especially given the lag on a lot of #1 titles since the start of the decade. (The last song to establish the slowest run to #1, three years ago, was Alessia Cara‘s “Here”, which hit the top in its 26th week.)

The top 40 is packed with strong entries this week, four in total, led by Ariana Grande‘s “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored” at #26, soaring from #44. It’s her 21st top 40 hit at the format. “thank u, next” and “7 rings” currently sit at #3 and #6 on the week’s update, respectively. Just behind her, labelmates Cardi B and Bruno Mars storm onto the chart at #27 with “Please Me”. The two artists previously topped the list for a week last March with a remix of the latter’s “Finesse”. “Please” gives Cardi B her eighth top 40 entry, while earning Mars his 21st at the format. Another two collaborations making big moves reach the top 40 this week: “Who Do You Love” zooms from 48-34 The Chainsmokers and 5 Seconds Of Summer, their 11th and eighth top 40 entries, respectively, while “I’ve Been Waiting” by Lil PeepiLoveMakonnen and Fall Out Boy climbs from 43-36. It’s the first entry in the top 40 for Lil Peep, who scores a posthumous hit, as iLoveMakonnen earns his second (his first since 2015) and Fall Out Boy collects their 15th top 40 song.

Impacting on Tuesday, along with the aforementioned Cardi B and Bruno Mars collaboration, Zedd and Katy Perry‘s “365” is new at #48, marking the highest of three debuts in the region. This is the first release recorded together by the two performers, who both have multiple #1 hits at the format individually. We’ll see if this one can also reach to the top. For further entries this week, “Money” checks in at #49 in a double win this week for Cardi B, a song that recently topped the Urban chart, while “Want You Back” enters at #50 for Grey and LÉON. The duo has several chart hits here, most notably appearing on Zedd’s #1 song “The Middle” with Maren Morris, but LÉON has her first Top 40 entry. However, her single “Tired Of Talking” made the top 30 on the Hot AC chart in 2016.

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (January 21, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. The government may not be open, but we’re sure open to analyzing this week’s data and giving you the best of the best music at pop radio. Let’s get into it!

THE COAST IS SHEER: Ahead of the release of his recently announced next single, “Happier”, coming this spring, Ed Sheeran is still perfectly happy with “Perfect”, which tops this week’s CHR/Top 40 chart for the second week. It does the same on the Hot AC chart, and also climbs 5-4 on the regular AC list, where it’s sure to reach #1 soon. (It’s also nearing the top 20 on Rhythmic radio.) A third week at #1 at the Top 40 format is possible, with “Perfect” still 1,200 spins ahead of Halsey‘s “Bad At Love” (up 3-2, without a bullet), though Dua Lipa‘s “New Rules” (up 4-3, gaining 1,400 spins) continues to look like a future #1 song. In any case, Sheeran’s still slaying effortlessly, which is no surprise, and his three concurrent chart hits (including features on Taylor Swift‘s “End Game” at #11 and Eminem‘s “River” at #24) are just the start of what should be a very successful 2018 for the singer/songwriter.

“FOR” BY FOUR: Four songs are new to the top 40 this week, three by bands and one a collaboration between two solo artists. Up a quick 13 notches to #33 to score their 25th top 40 entry since 2003, Maroon 5‘s “Wait” is certainly in a hurry to rise up the chart! Just a few weeks ago, the SZA-assisted “What Lovers Do”, which goes recurrent on this update after 20 weeks in the top 40, went to #3. Below “Wait”, two songs make a move of eight spots this week: “Hold Me Tight Or Don’t” by Fall Out Boy, up 44-36 and “Walk On Water” by Thirty Seconds To Mars, up 45-37. Fall Out Boy earns their 14th top 40 entry at the format and their first from the album M A N I A, which was released on Friday, while Thirty Seconds To Mars gets their third top 40 entry here and their first since “Closer To The Edge” in 2011, going to #32 that April. Finally, blasting onto the survey at #39, “For You” gives singers Liam Payne and Rita Ora share in their first top 40 single together, which becomes the fourth solo hit for Payne and the fifth for Ora. Taken off the soundtrack to Fifty Shades Freed, out on February 9, the Fifty Shades trilogy joins other film trilogies such as Beverly Hills Cop and Men In Black in having a top 40 pop hit from each of its three movies in the collection.

Further down the chart toward this week’s top 50 entries, look out for two notable songs from my own personal chart, “My My My!” by Troye Sivan (#46) and “Woman” from Kesha and The Dap-Kings Horns (#47), which both head for adds this Tuesday. The only other new song, the politically charged “Sick Boy” by The Chainsmokers, bows at #50, though it’s unclear whether this track is getting a full push to radio.

ADD LIB — Brace For (CHR) Impact (November 21, 2017)

Welcome to Add Lib, your Tuesday report on POP! Goes The Charts that’s mad about CHR/Top 40 adds, based on the station data provided by Mediabase 24/7 and Add Board. This week: Taylor Swift and friends have another swift start at pop radio, while the latest singles from Fall Out Boy and Kendrick Lamar find “love” from programmers at the format. Pass the turkey and the hot records, please…

WINNING THE “GAME”: Hot off her 50-31 move on last Sunday’s update, Taylor Swift‘s “End Game” begins its own game in the CHR world, taking the Most Added title at Top 40 stations this week. The latest single from reputation, which also features Ed Sheeran and Future, puts up 60 adds on the current report, well ahead of “One Foot” by Walk The Moon, which grabs 37 new stations one week after it impacted here. (It’s also up one spot and seven adds from last week’s results!) “Foot” is likely to step foot into the top 40 by midweek, which means it should have a notable jump by the published report on Sunday night. Everyone enjoys a sweet chart success, perhaps even more than sweet potatoes topped with marshmallows or even apple pie. (I think I’ll be eating a little of each come Thursday night. Drooling yet?)

Meanwhile, impacting singles from Kendrick Lamar and Fall Out Boy are gobbling up a nice musical meal; I guess they have a few trypto-fans here. The Zacari-assisted “Love.” by Lamar (25 adds, fourth place) and “Hold Me Tight Or Don’t” by the band (23 adds, fifth place) perform solidly in their first full week, though they probably could have boasted slightly higher station totals on a date that wasn’t close to a national holiday. At the current time, both tracks are below the top 50 here, but don’t be surprised to see them in there by the end of the month.

1. TAYLOR SWIFT featuring ED SHEERAN & FUTURE, “End Game” (Big Machine/Republic)
2. WALK THE MOON, “One Foot” (RCA)
3. SOFI TUKKER, “Best Friend” (Ultra/in2une)
4. KENDRICK LAMAR featuring ZACARI, “Love.” (Top Dawg Ent./Aftermath/Interscope)
5. FALL OUT BOY, “Hold Me Tight Or Don’t” (Island/Republic)
6-T. EMINEM featuring BEYONCÉ, “Walk On Water” (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope)
6-T. LIAM PAYNE, “Bedroom Floor” (Republic)
6-T. SELENA GOMEZ x MARSHMELLO, “Wolves” (Interscope)
9. NF, “Let You Down” (Capitol CMG/Caroline)
10. DEMI LOVATO, “Tell Me You Love Me” (Island/Republic)

RADIO REPORT: What’s Popping At Top 40 Radio This Week (November 20-21, 2017)

It’s time once again to analyze the airwaves and find out if your favorite new releases will be lighting up your local station’s playlist this week. Which tunes will climb to the top and which ones will hit a stop? Here are the two new tracks impacting this week at the Top 40 format:

FALL OUT BOY – “Hold Me Tight Or Don’t” (Island/Republic)
Album: M A N I A (2018)
Past T40 History: “Champion” just missed the top 40 earlier this year. Their biggest song to date, “Dance, Dance”, hit #3 in 2006.

KENDRICK LAMAR featuring ZACARI – “LOVE.” (Top Dawg Ent./Aftermath/Interscope)
Album: DAMN. (2017)
Past T40 History: Other than his featured slots, Lamar has struggled to find an audience here. “HUMBLE.” peaked at #26 in July.

Next week: To be announced soon! Happy Thanksgiving!

Which of these new songs would you like to see top the charts? Let me know!
