RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 5/14 – 5/20/17

Sunday afternoon means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week, all from my favorite independent acts out there. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

EZA – “Shape Of You” (iTunes) (Spotify)
You’ve heard this single plenty of times on the radio at this point, but you haven’t heard it quite like this. Nashville’s Ellery Bonham was last on the Rewind in September, when her excellent EP dropped, but her new electronic cover really elevates an average track.

_____

LAUV – “I Like Me Better” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Former New Yorker turned Angeleno singer/songwriter Ari Leff keeps stacking up the streaming hits! Of course, his biggest release remains “The Other”, which has 85 million streams (combining all versions) on Spotify. His latest jam is a catchy and feel good bop.

_____

For more great new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
Greer – “Satisfy” (SoundCloud)
Ryan Egan – “Easy To Lose” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: Thirty Top Tunes From 2016

Record Rewind - January 1, 2017

Happy New Year from PGTC! It’s Sunday afternoon, which means it’s time for the Record Rewind, highlighting the top new tracks that you might’ve missed during the work week. If it’s on the site, it’s something that you need to check out!

This week, it’s a Record Rewind special, presenting thirty of the top tracks to make my Spotify playlists throughout 2016. So many great new artists put their music online this year, while those established in the blog world continued to create massive tunes. You will find a Spotify playlist below of all thirty songs, plus twelve highlighted throughout the post. By the way, several hundred songs made these lists during the year, so don’t feel bad if yours isn’t below. It was hard! 2017 is a new year, so give it your best shot.

Check out our Spotify profile page for the Indie Winter Mix (2015/2016), Indie Spring Mix, Indie Summer Mix and Indie Fall Mix for all the action from this year.

(Acts that have been signed since appearing on the lists have been noted below. Positions indicate chronological order, not rank.)

Listen:

Enjoy all the great music!

Dario Darnell’s father might be Kid Creole, but this kid has a major radio hit in the making with this absolute jam. It’s a killer track.

9. SODY / MARTIN LUKE BROWN – “Wasted Youth”

This Ohio group actually made me “Love” their EP from earlier this year. Also, Alternative radio gatekeepers, make this song a hit!

16. CODY FRY – “Go”
Added to Indie Summer Mix: July 22, 2016
Label: Independent

17. STEFAN ALEXANDER – “Skeleton”
Added to Indie Summer Mix: July 22, 2016

Added to Indie Summer Mix: August 7, 2016
Label: Proxy

20. EZA, “Alive”
Added to Indie Summer Mix: August 12, 2016

Sensual and unconventional: it’s a small taste of the EP Dead Reckoning, and this glorious gem from Ellery Bonham is impressive.

21. PHANGS, “Cul De Sac”
Added to Indie Summer Mix: August 24, 2016
Label: Independent

22. GOLDEN COAST, “Recess”
Added to Indie Summer Mix: August 26, 2016
Label: Independent

23. BEN HOBBS, “Animals”
Added to Indie Summer Mix: August 31, 2016

In a zoo full of musical madness, this song escaped from its cage and into my ears this summer. Hobbs has a great catalog of music.

24. JORDAN GABLE, “Didn’t Mean It”
Added to Indie Fall Mix: September 9, 2016
Label: Independent

25. WANDERER, “Call Me Crazy”
Added to Indie Fall Mix: September 9, 2016
Label: Independent

26. MULLALLY, “Wonderful”
Added to Indie Fall Mix: September 20, 2016
Label: Black Diamond Music

There’s an exciting buzz around singer Connor Mullally, and I’m sure 2017 will be more, well, wonderful for him in plenty of ways.

27. RAINSFORD, “Too Close”
Added to Indie Fall Mix: September 23, 2016
Label: Independent

28. WHISSELL, “Pain Of Love”
Added to Indie Fall Mix: September 29, 2016

From her upcoming EP, Nashville singer Lauren Whistle delivered with this inspired cut. I’m excited for the release in a few weeks.

Added to Indie Fall Mix: October 20, 2016
Label: Independent

30. MATT WOODS, “If You Forget Me”

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 9/11 – 9/17

Record Rewind - September 18, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

CAPPA – “Hey Hi Hello” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Bonjour and hola to another fun song from this Nashville singer, featured on her recent EP release titled Queen Of Hearts. She’s certainly been the Queen of the Rewind recently, with several cuts included to date. What are you waiting for? Check out her EP.

_____

EZA – “Sway” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Also adding to the abundance of Nashville pop this week is a cut from the scintillating and sensual Dead Reckoning EP, the latest set of songs from performer Ellery Bonham. It’s truly a great body of work. Look out for the sweat pouring out of your speakers.

_____

JUNIOR PROM – “You, Me, And Joe Strummer” (iTunes) (Spotify)
True story: I originally heard this song back in February 2015 when I was consulting at Atlantic Records, and this act, which was a duo at the time, was signed to sister label Elektra. Times have changed, but the track is still excellent, and I absolutely support it!

_____

MILLINGTON – “Being” (iTunes) (Spotify)
The only international singer in this week’s review is a great discovery from Melbourne, Australia. Tom Millington combines pop and world sounds to create this upbeat stomper, which was written about the joys of his daughter’s birth. Very sweet thing to do!

_____

ROZES – “Under The Grave” (iTunes) (Spotify)
During the summer, the Philadelphia singer dropped “Hangin’ On”, which continues to see some action from a set of remixes. On Friday, “Under” was released, an electronic pop single that sounds like it’s bound for radio play. Will it bloom beyond the blogs?

_____

SLOW SUGAR – “Pieces” (iTunes) (Spotify)
In early August, I covered this New York duo and their track “Hypnotic Love”, which was a great debut. Now, Danielle Harris and Alex Utay return with another solid indie pop song, full of dream and ethereal influences. Check out that wordplay in the chorus.

_____

For more new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
ADAM SAMPLE – “Weekend” (SoundCloud)
AIRPLANE MAN – “Take Me All The Way Home” (SoundCloud)
JAMES DROLL – “Sleepwalker” (SoundCloud)

NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: Releases For The Week of September 16, 2016

Working Hard to hit the top.

Working Hard to hit the top.

Two solo males with previous #1 albums are going head-to-head in a battle for the top spot this week. Will either performer get that coveted #1? Will a surprise knock both of them out of the fight? Here are the notable albums and singles out this week:

USHER — Hard II Love (iTunes)
22 (!) years after his self-titled set was released in stores, the 37-year-old R&B singer is still going strong with his latest offering. Though several cuts from the album have seen airplay across multiple formats, the biggest of them is “No Limit”, which remains in the top five on Rhythmic and Urban radio. Could this become his fifth #1 on the Billboard 200? We’ll find out soon.

MAC MILLER — The Divine Feminine (iTunes)
Miller’s hit the top five three times on the Billboard 200 since 2011, and this could very well be his fourth trip into the region. In this set, seven of the ten songs are collaborations with other artists, including Ariana Grande and Kendrick Lamar.

More albums out this week: Aaron Lewis‘s Sinner (iTunes), Against Me!‘s Shape Shift With Me (iTunes), AlunaGeorge‘s I Remember (iTunes), Bad Suns‘s Disappear Here (iTunes), Meat Loaf‘s Braver Than We Are (iTunes), Michael Chiklis‘s Influence (iTunes), Taking Back Sunday‘s Tidal Wave (iTunes), Willie Nelson‘s For The Good Times: A Tribute To Ray Price (iTunes)

More EPs out this week: CAPPA‘s Queen Of Hearts (iTunes), EZA‘s Dead Reckoning (iTunes)

New digital-only singles that you can buy this week include:
“Don’t Be A Fool”, Shawn Mendes (iTunes)
“Hurts”, Emeli Sandé (iTunes)
“Lemonade”, Skylar Grey (iTunes)
“Love Me In A Field”, Luke Bryan (iTunes)
“Mad Love”, JoJo (iTunes)
“My Way”, Calvin Harris (iTunes)
“Our Town”, Tyler Farr (iTunes)
“Root Beer Float”, Olivia O’Brien (iTunes)
“Same Old Blues”, Phantogram (iTunes)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 8/7 – 8/13

Record Rewind - August 14, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. If you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the PGTC SoundCloud page and my playlists on Spotify, these stuck out as my favorite independent songs of the week…

_____

EZA – “Alive” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Following her big tune “Off The Record”, Ellery Bonham is back with a sensual little song from her forthcoming Dead Reckoning EP, due on September 16. (I’ve heard the full set and highly recommend it!) Embracing an urban pop feel, it’s a real slow burner.

_____

JUNIOR EMPIRE – “Decide” (iTunes) (Spotify)
You’ve seen this act on many larger blogs and playlists since the summer began. Both this song and previous single “West Coast” are currently on the overall Hype Machine chart, with the prior release actually outperforming the new one. It’s all quality stuff.

_____

KID RUNNER – “Illuminate” (iTunes) (Spotify)
You know I’m still a firm believer that “Give Me Something To Love” is bound to be a huge Alternative hit, but this Columbus act has plenty of other great cuts on an EP that was released on Friday. This track delivers on the synthpop goodness, but still rocks.

_____

LUKR – “Scarecrow” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Whether you enjoyed the original version on Lightning 100 back in 2014, or you’re digging this new mix now, Luke Foley is quite the talent. Spotify’s New Music Friday lists think so too. I think he’ll continue to follow the yellow brick road to big chart success.

_____

OTIS ENGLISH – “Young Kids, Old Love” (iTunes) (Spotify)
It’s the first time for English on my weekly post, a 21-year-old singer and songwriter from Los Angeles. He has an awesome track on his hands with this energetic indie pop song, featuring solid writing and production. Look out for more music from him soon.

_____

OYSTER KIDS – “Gum (Everybody’s My Friend)” (iTunes) (Spotify)
It’s been five months since these Kids dropped their last release, “Lips”, and now their lips are singing a different tune. It’s a cool one too. Embodying a laid-back West Coast sound, their new song is great for any hot and lazy summer day. Chew on this flavor.

_____

For more new music, these tunes are worth a listen…
DAN OWEN – “Made To Love You” (SoundCloud)
HANNAH JANE LEWIS – “Hide And Go Seek” (SoundCloud)
JAKE DAVIS – “Saying It Right” (SoundCloud)
KINDER – “Light” (SoundCloud)

RECORD REWIND: PGTC Picks, 6/5 – 6/11

Record Rewind - June 12, 2016

Our new Record Rewind is about highlighting the top new songs that you may have missed, or should discover, from many of my favorite independent acts out there. We’ll be testing it out this month, so if you like what you see, let me know what you think!

Across the world of SoundCloud and my Indie Summer Mix on Spotify, these records stuck out as my favorite independent tunes of the week…

_____

CARDBOARD KIDS – “Struggle” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Sometimes, the struggle is real. In fact, this “Struggle” is real… real solid, that is. Nashville’s four Kids are back and going around the pop playground we call the blogosphere, scoring in the top 20 on the Hype Machine Twitter chart. Their Mint EP is out soon.

_____

DENNY WHITE – “Sweetness”
Golden Coast’s golden boy returns with a treat of a track; call it smooth ear candy infused with a dark core. White’s single jumped to #1 on Hype Machine’s Twitter list during the week, the top 30 overall, and remains popular on several sites. Have a cavity yet?

_____

EZA – “Off The Record” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Nashville’s Ellery Bonham is no stranger to hot pop records, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that I’m on the record with my approval for her latest jam. It’s great. “Off” saw a nice boost from a Billboard premiere and an add on Spotify’s U.S. New Music Friday list.

_____

HALFNOISE – “Know The Feeling” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Many people are obsessed with “Can’t Stop The Feeling” at the moment, myself included, but there are a few other “feeling” cuts out there waiting to be heard. This Zac Farro project has one of them, a slice of electro-pop that’ll satisfy the SoundCloud crowd.

_____

HANNAH JANE LEWIS – “Bend Or Break” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Lewis’s potent pop sound delivered her great results with her previous single, “Why Start A War”, and thus, the war for blog love continues with a likable follow-up single. If you haven’t heard much about the London newcomer so far, you definitely will soon.

_____

JAKIL – “Tongue Tied” (iTunes) (Spotify)
This five-man band is a new one on my radar, but we’ll be keeping an eye on them. They’re based in London and Edinburgh. They seem to be wrapping their tongues around the popular and slick 80’s sound that’s made a comeback in the past few years. I like it.

_____

JUNIOR EMPIRE – “West Coast” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Currently in the top ten on Hype Machine is this cool track, a new single from the group that went through a recent name change. They were previously known as The Mispers. Now, the act delivers a nice summery song, a mixture of pop and electric goodness.

_____

LAUV featuring TRAVIS MILLS – “Question” (iTunes) (Spotify)
Lauv was featured on our 16 For ’16 list late last year, when he gained massive support for his Lost In The Light EP and songs like “Reforget” and “The Other”. He’s a lion by name, and his production certainly roars. Oh, and the answer is to keep listening to it.

_____

PRETTY SISTER – “West Coast” (iTunes) (Spotify)
We have dueling “West Coast” records in the lineup this week, and I had to feature them both. I may as well take a vacation to the western part of the country soon. This Zak Waters project has impressed with several viral hits, and this soulful song is excellent.

_____

ZAYDE WØLF – “Will I Fall” (iTunes) (Spotify)
How will this Wolf survive? A steady diet of syncs and reactive songs, of course. The Rare Breed EP is a good listen, featuring the anthemic track “Built For This Time”, but “Will I Fall” is another solid single from the Nashville musician. Get onto the dark side.
