RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (December 23, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. This is the first of two holiday freeze reports and we’re certainly feeling the chill. Luckily, there are still a few tunes to cover ahead of Christmas. Here’s what’s popping this week:

WHAT YULE EXPECT THIS WEEK: You could say that Panic! At The Disco has a strong ho-ho-hold on the Alternative, Hot AC and Top 40 lists for a third week in a row with their crossover smash “High Hopes”, which Santa might be bopping to as he takes his sleigh around the world in a few days. With little action on any of the radio charts this week, here are a few of the entries towards the bottom of the survey that could be making some larger moves in the new year:

Up two notches to #39, after becoming a solid radio hit in Canada earlier this year, “Ain’t Easy” from Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine becomes the first top 40 entry for the duo here in the States. Their follow-up song, “Better Off”, is still charting at several formats up north, while their new seasonal release, “It’s Me & You (This Christmas)”, is also picking up airplay.

One other title heads into the top 40 this week: “1999” by Charli XCX and Troye Sivan, up from 43-40 to become the fifth top 40 single for the former and fourth for the latter. Though Sivan’s hit “My My My!” reached #21 in March, Charli XCX hasn’t entered the top 40 here in nearly four years, last ranking with “Break The Rules” in January 2015. After a couple of near misses in 2015’s “Doing It” and 2016’s “After The Afterparty”, which got to #43 and #41, respectively, it looks like she might be back on track with this single and its viral music video from a few months ago.

For top 50 entries, you’ll find only one this week: “Zeze”, coming in at #49 for Kodak Black featuring Travis Scott and Offset. At this point next week, it’s likely be at #1 on Rhythmic chart, though it ranks at #2 on the latest update. The collaboration is also in the top ten on the Urban radio list. Due to high streaming numbers, “Zeze” also recently peaked at #2 on the Hot 100.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from PGTC!

RADIO ACTIVE — A Weekly Chart CHRonicle (November 4, 2018)

Welcome to Radio Active, a Sunday evening report from POP! Goes The Charts that gets to the chart of the matter: all the highlights from the CHR/Top 40 chart, as published by Mediabase 24/7 and Mediabase Research. Don’t forget to vote on Tuesday! It’s a super important midterm election this year and your voice matters. Meanwhile, these voices count on the airwaves all around the country. Time to see what’s popping this Sunday:

THANK “GOD” IT’S SUNDAY: Congrats to Ariana Grande and her second #1 single of the Sweetener era, “God Is A Woman”, moving from 2-1 on this week’s Top 40 chart. It reaches the top in its 15th week in the top 40. Grande’s “Breathin” climbs from 13-9, which is also likely to cruise to #1 before the end of the year. However, this comes at the interesting time for the performer, as a new tune off her upcoming album, titled “Thank U, Next”, debuted on Saturday evening to a good dose of online buzz and solid sales and streaming momentum. (Expect some curiosity play in the coming days, though it hasn’t officially been serviced to any format.) Does “Thank” cut deeper into the spins for her two big hits, or will they all co-exist together in one big family of smashes? We’ll see soon.

“CLOSE” ENCOUNTERS: A pair of top pop songs enter the top 40 on this week’s chart, as DJ Snake featuring Selena Gomez, Ozuna and Cardi B‘s “Taki Taki” rises from 43-38, while Why Don’t We‘s “8 Letters” climbs from 42-39. Meanwhile, four tracks are new to the top 50, led by “Waste It On Me” by Steve Aoki featuring BTS at #45. Aoki and the band previously charted together nearly a year ago, when his remix of the septet’s Desiigner-assisted “MIC Drop” spent two weeks at #24 in January. That release is the highest-charting song for both acts at the Top 40 format, while “Waste” will likely become the third top 40 hit for both. A couple of spots lower, “Close To Me” comes in at #47 for Ellie Goulding x Diplo featuring Swae Lee. It’s the first time that all three acts have appeared on the same song. Newcomers Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine bounce into the #49 position with “Ain’t Easy”, a radio hit in Canada across multiple formats from earlier this year. Finally, at #50, Rita Ora tries again for her second top 40 single of the year with “Let You Love Me”. She previously entered that region back in January with “For You”, a duet with Liam Payne from the movie Fifty Shades Freed that topped out at #35.
